Bought my 99 C4 in January. I love it. Even found the steering terrific. Having come from a LOTUS.

Good ol' missionary... The standard go to and it gets the job done. Most reviewers rave about the steering feel in this age of Porsche, interesting that you felt it was numb. Never driven the 996 so I can't comment, but I have a 987 Boxster S and my steering wheel is constantly chatting to me about the feel of the road. I understand something like a car being loveable and more exciting due to quirks and faults. I'm old enough to want reliability! People say that Porsches are too good and that's what makes them not great. Funnily enough, this generation of Porsche is derided by many people because it isn't perfect enough - the 996 has many faults and quirks that other Porsches don't have. Funny looking (to many) headlights, no glove box, IMS, RMS, outdated interior and so on. Great, honest review.

@christophersabat3884 thank you! Honestly I find newer Porsches have way more feel than the 996 did. I've got a Turbo S review coming out tomorrow and that was completely opposite, you can feel the rotation on the car and everything out the box. All of the Cayman models I've driven are the same!

Hmm, maybe I'm biased because I've had a 2001 C2 since new but I think the feel and precision of the steering are precisely reasons why I love it as much as I do. Maybe its lack of all wheel drive and weight add to the fun factor...and the steering feel? A good friend has an 03 Turbo which I get to drive periodically and I love it...but it also has another 100+ horsepower to complement its AWD. Good video.

Like many other commenters, I’m surprised by your thoughts on the steering feel. I wonder if anything in the front end has ever been replaced, or if it’s running standard alignment? I remember my ‘99 C2 was pretty vague and understeered when stock. Some coilovers, RSB and moderately aggressive geo absolutely transformed it.

Very underrated cars. I had a 2000 996 Gen 1 GT3 for many years and was by far the best car I've owned. It was a Club Sport version so had bucket seats and a roll cage, huge fun on track though a little harsh for daily use. The engine which was mildly modified produced around 400bhp, revved to 8200 and sounded epic with no driver aids apart from ABS brakes. The GT2, GT3 & Turbo models used a different engine to the regular 996's, basically a heavily re-worked version of the air cooled 911 engine but water cooled and much more robust. Hope you get a chance to drive one someday.

Drove a 2003 GT3 when I had a 1997 C2 3.4 manual. Literally hopped from mine into my friend's. Absolutely could not believe the difference, and to this day remains one of my favourite drives of all time.

@@shortshiftuk if you think the standard (ish) car is numb, the Turbo is much more refined. A monstrously capable car that is brutally fast. If you want all the feels, try a GT3/RS.

I have great steering feel on my rwd Carrera, so can't understand why this one feels dead, unless it's a C4 thing. Also can't understand the logic of marking a rating down for being too good. If a car is good because it has flaws, try an Austin Maxi or a Lada Riva - you'll love them! 🙂

This happens all the time. Folk approach these cars with God like reverence - the hype, the rear engine dynamics, the flat 6, the history, and then they’re disappointed - the car doesn’t live up to expectations on your short test drive. Drive it some more however, and it will. When you get it you’ll get it, and you’ll see what the hype is all about. No, it won’t be bristling with feel like your Exige nor will it have the instant zip of a Tesla, but when you get that engine singing and the weight shifting and powering out of a corner at full throttle, you’ll be hooked.
@shortshiftukАй бұрын
I actually had the car all day and don't tend to dally about with them! Don't get me wrong, it was a great car, just too good. I like cars that are rough around the edges, but the Porsche was just so refined for its age. Everything was spot on with it. Fantastic note as well from that sports exhaust!

Love the car… scared stiff of bore-score… which… almost every Porsche mechanic will insist… is inevitable on every 996…997… some Boxters and Caymans.. .. and will cost you $20K to rebuild the entire engine! Most I have talked to say that we are now starting to se more of cars with the problem as the coating on the cylinders and pistons starts to peel off and starts putting scratches in the cylinder…and with that… engine end game.

I like your video and delivery. All good you should have more subs. I have a 986 and 996 c4s. Both did not live upto my expectations from purchase. Despite both sellers raving how good they where. However do remember these are over 20 years old with possibly poor maintenance and deteriorating rubber bushes. I rebuilt the suspenion on both (986 was polybushed)replaced the power steering fluid. How many will have done that if it wasnt leaking? More importantly dailed it back into factory spec for caster tracking and camber. I would now say the feeback on the 911 steering is the best car i have ever driven. So maybe you just had a tired example. Look foreward to your next review.
@shortshiftukАй бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you! This is actually a pretty good example and very well maintained, BUT I do wonder what it would be like with a proper set up now you've said that!
@pasit17382 күн бұрын
I own one. Without aero kit. Despite the envious talk - which is the best part of owning a Porsche - it is a genuine 911. The exhaust isn't original, so it has a bit more manly sound and the men struggle to not to watch it whenever I drive down the street. We, the men, are quite funny with all this testosterone.
@Looney2123 күн бұрын
Right off the bat at 1:07 you mention the headlights are from the GT1 car. This is not correct. In fact the 1996 GT1 had 993 headlights and tail lights and the 1997 GT1 got the headlights and tail lights from the 996. But the whole headlight story is cute.

A 996 with numb steering? That surprises me as the 996 I had gave me pretty much the most detailed feedback of any car I have driven. I currently race a 987 Cayman that has amazing steering feel, and I think my 996 was at least as good if not even better.
