The good, old PNW. A place I call home. Easy to survive here, if you know how. Easy to die here, if you don't. We have people die on day hikes because they didn't prepare for what could happen. We still have critters that can, and do kill people. Good times, if you know what to do, and not do. I will admit that the "Basic Survival Kit" used in the story is not my usual loadout for a wilderness trek. I always bring an axe, 5 different knives, a multitool, 7 ways to start a fire carried in different pockets and in my pack. a tarp, emergency thermal blanket, fishing kit, and lots of extra goodies. my pack only weighs about 25 lbs. and I can walk all day with this on my back. Clothing is a whole different game based on time and place. A parka will not help in the High Desert in August, and short will kill you almost everywhere in January.

The last couple lines sound like they could have come from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. A couple of those lines just made me laugh, especially the one about the Apology to Steve Thompson, and then the one about who would you like to be your instructor, someone who can start a fire in the rain or the one who spent 3 hours trying to voice activate a flashlight.

Matches? What were these, Army Surplus survival kits from the '70s? While the good old P38 is still an adequate can opener, most of the better survival kits contain a magnesium block and flint striker for firestarters. Scrape off a small pile of magnesium flakes, pile your dry tinder on top, and make sparks. And unlike matches, it works when wet.

Thanks for the laughs. Survival equipment should be primarily non powered. However, a flashlight & radio that runs on a combo of batteries, solar power, & hand crank is good, but don't forget the matches and that metal rod you strike with a knife to make sparks. My mid-60s brain can't pull up the name of the metal at the moment. I also suggest bringing some REAL steel wool without soap in it along with some batteries. Apparently, when you hold real steel wool against the end of a battery, it starts to burn. Tech can be very helpful and fun, but is useless without power. In an emergency situation, solutions that work without power are more reliable and can keep you safe--and alive. If you have some limited power during an emergency, like an emergency generator, you need to prioritize what electronic devices get to use the power and use non powered methods for other things. At home, the fridge should probably get first priority on power usage, and maybe the microwave oven, which only needs to be on a very short time. Out in the wild, priorities are likely to be different. Anyway, thanks again for the story. My IBS has been flaring up since yesterday, and I needed some laughs.

I wonder what city folks would have been like there. I've been camping and done survival training (one afternoon but still) as a kid in the 90's, I wouldn't have been as good as the humans. But city folks might be worse.
@ryanpiercy33902 ай бұрын
depends on the city folk, a lot of bums need fire to cook their food too, they probably wouldn't be as good as experienced survivalists but still, they kinda are survivalists of a different sort.
@sherrykathman33092 ай бұрын
I'm a city folk and I definitely would have sucked, but not as badly as the aliens. I definitely would have started trying to prepare shelter right away. What is the rule of 3? Something like "3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food"?
@SerenaSilverMoon2 ай бұрын
@ryanpiercy3390 Yeah, but I meant like living in an apartment, working in the city, and eating mostly easy, ready meals or REALLY easy home cooking. People that have never even thought of going camping or how to survive if something bad happened.
@SerenaSilverMoon2 ай бұрын
@sherrykathman3309 Yeah, that sounds about right. And it's harder to get water than food if you don't know what you're doing.
@ryanpiercy33902 ай бұрын
@@SerenaSilverMoon people living in apartments are more often the ones at risk of being homeless if something happens. Many of them were homeless at least once for a short time. They may not be as good as country folk in some survival situations but most of the women at least have the sense to read the instructions before trying to use something they don't understand. To get this bad amongst humans, you would likely have to go look at the idle rich who were pampered all their lives and mentally can't bring themselves to actually work and meet their own needs.

Would have been funny if they went by "alone" or "naked and afraid" standards. Especially the second one where you get a pot and Firestarter and a blade. No clothes but a burlap bag. Some seasons you get to bring something like a bow and arrow or slingshot or something you pick. Humans are cold, aliens are screwed.
