CF Type A makes a lot of sense for this, because it will be paired with A7 S III in lot of scenarios which uses same cards... S III doesn't have space on it for Type B... It would be cool to see on next FX9 or FS cameras dual slot, but not CF A and SD like this has, but combined CF A and CF B if it's possible... so you could either use big cards like on other cameras, or small ones you use on this and in mirrorless

I like that Sony has opted for keeping a lower resolution(laughable to call 4k low resolution). I would much prefer a 4k video camera that has or is near global shutter than a 8K+ video camera with rolling shutter issues. I like being able to point a camera out a car window without all the verticals looking slanted. Still wish that the cameras would also allow for ultra high frame rates beyond what most would consider usable for cinema work. 1000fps+ at 360p is absolutely usable for diagnostic work. For years I had a point and shoot that supported 1000fps at 120p and that was very useful for tuning mechanical parts or diagnosing issues.

speed
@jaketyler37763 жыл бұрын
The new cards are built up from a newer standard of file format processing, so will end up being much faster then SD. Consider the amount of types of SD cards, its about time we had a new standard for these. SD cards were originally 32/64MB.
@andrewszczplaylist3 жыл бұрын
No, it is not. Sony chose type a, which is smallest form to allow for cfexpress/sd combo slot, which is unique to sony(for exaple for canon r5 you have one sd and one type b slot). Camera sizes are more constrained with buttons, lens mounts, ergonomics etc, not card sizes.
@dadanardi55413 жыл бұрын
Speed and heat, SDcard can be really fast but it's generating too much heat, CFexpress type A is more efficient and moreover still on early stage which mean it's still has more potential down the line in the future whereas SDcard already hit the upper ceiling. This camera and the a7siii actually can use SDcard without compromise. You just can't shot with all-i codec which is not necessary at all.
@randomgeocacher3 жыл бұрын
Smaller = more space for PCBs etc in the body, so from manufacturer perspective smaller is preferred. Makes the camera build cheaper and better. From a user perspective, larger cards are better because they are sturdier and harder to misplace. Presuming SD cards never will be a true competitor to NVMe/PCIe storage, you probably will move away from SD cards in the future. That 100MB/s per UHS bus (double on buses on UHS-II) is a big limitation for the future. That said SD card competitors like CF has been a mess going from CF to CFast to CFExpress A/B/C; you basically have had 4-5 open standards alternatives to SD cards, with very limited utilization. Where SD cards has remained same/similar, the “pro” CF line change protocols way to often. Expensive/annoying.

People need to start understanding that CF Express and XQD (Same form factor) are a superior memory format since it's PCIE based and not Sata based like CFast. We should be thankful that Nikon and Sony have switched to that unlike RED who just released a brand new camera that uses the old CFast standard. Even Arri has converted to Codex cards which can write faster than CFast cards allowing them to record Raw internally without an addition recording module. Hopefully a channel like this or TechQuicky can make a video letting people know before consumers destroy CF Express from lack of knowledge.
