Been looking at a ton of tarp videos for a good set up. You’re the only one that has shown this one. It is perfect in my opinion. Can’t wait to set it up. Going to call it the danimal!

I learned that pitch about 15 years ago. No one knew what it’s called. It’s been my preference ever since. I’m in the northwest US and I hunt. I had been using a 10’x10’ tarp but I wanted more room for our deep winter weather and snow. I experimented with larger rectangular tarps and that pitch can also be done with a rectangle. I use a 14’x16’, heavy gauge rip stop plastic tarp. I end up with a bare floor at the doorway end of the tent. My muddy gear and storage can go there and I have room for a low cot, small stool and small table and all my gear is in there with me. I’m camping out of a pickup so weight isn’t an issue. I still like the 10’x10’ for most of the year and I’ve taken to always having a 7’x9’ tarp in my hunting pack in case something happens and I have to spend an unexpected night away from my base camp. I really like the fact that you can wing out the side as you showed here. It’s a more versatile pitch than the usual plow point pitch that all the Bushcraft channels always show. I can have my gas lantern and single burner gas stove in my winter setup too. You set yours up a bit different in the beginning but still end up with the same pitch as I now prefer. I’m glad someone else has shown this. More people should learn it and try it. I always have at least 4 adjustable aluminum poles with me and use them as I choose and weather permits. It’s an impossible pitch to try to explain though ain’t it? You gotta see it done. 👍👏✌️

I was going to make a direct comment but you already covered this better than I could. I am 6' tall so I agree, a larger tarp than 3m by 3m would be best for me. This setup seems hugely superior to the standard plow point.

Thank you for the training. Like you, I like to clear the area where I’ll be sleeping and sitting. That job goes better if I use the side edge of a trowel or shovel to scrape debris back out of the area. Stones, sticks, acorns, pine cones, pull tabs, broken glass, etc etc. The edge of a tool does a nice job of gathering and moving out the junk. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I have tried this setup twice now. I have decided that it is my favorite. I hate bugs and I do not want to use bug chemical repellants. What I do is roll up the edges that run along each other. I then clamp them together and it connects them in a way that prevents bugs from entering. This makes this an almost sealed tent-like pitch. I will be calling this Danimal setup. Thanks so much for showing this to me because it is now my favorite. This pitch has wind and rain protection, a ground sheet, enough room to lay out, room for your gear, kneeling height, and the prospect of shutting bugs out. A bit hard to learn the angles and heights.

I just set this up and am liking it A LOT! ....I won't sleep out without a bug net. An inner ridgeline can be easily created from the long side stake then run inside and up to the support stick allows to hang a bugnet on it. This pitch is the most versatile I've ever seen....Thank you so much!

Love this setup. I use a 8’ pole for the front like you have. Off the top of the pole have a long guy line across the back to catch that back wall loop. It will lift it upwards vs the downward as you have it. Doesn’t seem like a deal but I’m 6’1 and it gives more room to maneuver inside. This setup is awesome for a group camp. Have a star pattern head to head, open sides up, and have a fire pit in the middle.

🇬🇧 (Translation) Thank you for your video, your basic setup is very close to the ideal. A tree, another pole and two or three pegs will always provide enough attachment points for a minimal tent construction in which it is comfortable to sit upright. What is attached to it as tarpaulins(!) depends on the weather and weight or simply arises from one's own imagination & needs or what is found on the spot. Protection from rain, wind, foreign s😉ight, insects and strong sunlight can be achieved with classic (tent) tarpaulins, foils, blankets, mosquito nets and fabrics of all kinds, which retain their practical properties for their actual purposes. The lighter (and the thinner) this "outer skin" is, the more of it you can take with you, which means "more living space". The many gaps in the structure allow ventilation and a view to the outside. With a rope and a walking stick as well as a small shovel that can also be used as a ground anchor and barbecue skewers, you already create the basis for your house, which can be made homely with a rain poncho, rescue foil and just various blankets and towels.😉 🇩🇪 (Original) Danke für dein Video, dein Grundaufbau kommt dem Ideal sehr nahe.

Mate, that’s awesome. I haven’t been out for over a year due to family commitments but when I do go again this is the ideal set-up for me. I was lugging a tent weighing 7 lbs along with everything else on three-day trips, I have that exact tarp already and I’m going to practice in the garden. This will really lighten my pack. Your taught hitch is different from the way I was taught, but I will be using it your way for many applications. The way I normally do it is non-slippable, so I keep it fastened on my tents, but for hanging tarps I see that it could be very useful for being able to untie it quickly and easily. Thank you very much

I really like the idea of a tarp, its simplicity and variety of setups. Living in Scotland, I don’t see that many opportunities. From May until October, the main season, I’ll need protection against the midges. Most areas are exposed and I’m not convinced that this setup copes well with high winds. And of course, I love winter camping where I have to admit, I prefer a bit more protection from the weather. March and April, I think, are the only times I could see using it.

I love this setup it is probably my favorite I am a floor person. For the tightening of the door I find I have issues because I don't always have 10x10 tarps sometimes more rectangular, the trick is not clean there are other ways possibly to do this but at the top of your treking pole you can wrap the top of the pyramid around the tip of the trekking pole and then take your guy line out and that will tighten up like I said it's not the most pretty but I found that that gets some of the air flow out because where I'm from the cold is severe. I like your enthusiasm keep on keeping on.

Also the zelter shelter is a pretty sweet tarp tent poncho. It's a bit heavier and not a lot of space in it but it's basically this design with a zipper on the door edges and on the side edges. I like the idea of a tarp tent under a pound that is breathable spacious and fully encloses to keep the critters out.

That's not a tautline, which is a good thing. It is an adjustable grip hitch, which is actually better. The cow hitch is not very reliable and may slip depending on how hard-laid or soft-laid the various materials are. The pole size is about half the width of the tarp, so 1.5 meters or 4'11" in this case. Excellent setup for open/warm or closed down for bad weather.
