You don't want to miss this exclusive edit from Fiji's mega swell.
The reports said they would be some of the biggest waves ever to hit Cloudbreak, so we sent a legendary crew there to document - and ride - history.
Ever since the historic June 2012 swell at Cloudbreak in Fiji, big wave surfers have pondered the possibilities of the one that got away. You know the one. Some have called it the 'unicorn wave.' Well, six years later, the unicorn showed its face once again.
Mark Healey takes off his leash at the last second, diving as deep as he can through the back of this translucent beast. A handful of other surfers frantically paddling for the shoulder. Meanwhile, Healey's board sits perfectly alone in the pitching lip, looking more like a toothpick than the 10-foot-plus chunk of fibreglass that it was.
Some have called it the 'unicorn wave.' Well, six years later, the unicorn showed its face once again - and perennial big-wave charger Ramon Navarro was on it.
While Navarro's bomb - which you can witness in this fresh edit above, by legendary big-wave filmer Tim Bonython - was the biggest of the day, it sure wasn't the only mind-blowing ride to go down. Guys like Kai Lenny, Natxo Gonzalez, Laurie Towner, Luke Shepardson, Kelly Slater, and others were there to make history. Click on the edit above to relive the greatest moments.

I literally cried after watching. After 30 years of surfing I was diagnosed 4 years ago with myotonic muscular dystrophy. In my mid-30s I was most comfortable in Big Surf.I now have the money to travel to the places I want to go to, but now I just get to watch. I've had big sessions at killers and sunset. So I'll take what I've been given.

Going to remember this comment. Stay stoked man and that last statement you make is something I think we all could benefit from doing (take what we’re given, acceptance of the objectively factual but with a meant to be perspective/approach

@@gasblowindev1537 Except at 1:50, 2:20 and 2:38 you see the surfers get to their feet having paddled in... Some big waves need a tow-in, but most of these appear not to be. As for the original post: I don't understand why these video makers don't show the real speed and then a slo-mo and why they have to drown it all out in heavy metal or the classical mash-up playing here.

As far as I know... That place usually can't produce that pedigree of wave EVER! It's like JAWS and TEAHUPO'O having a baby with all of the danger that both places bring into one. That's heavy as well as pushing hard over shallow reef.
@perikopalotespalotones2729
@perikopalotespalotones2729 6 жыл бұрын
Really?? For me it seems way easier wave than Teahupoo, and not as dangerous... Idk about Jaws tho. Also I think it cannot be shallow with that amount of water moving and being that big, it shouldn't break over shallow reef but there should be at least a few meters of water between surface and bottom. I've surfed a total of about 20 months more or less in Indonesia, in 8-9 trips there.... That's what I learned there. I've always surfed the biggest swells there, triple overhead( 2,3,5 guys out maximum) Of course with big size, depending on the Wipeout or getting caught inside, it can send you to the bottom, but definitely when it's big is not shallow, it breaks so far from the shore...

@@perikopalotespalotones2729 Triple overhead in Indo? Where? This video is triple overhead and after surfing Indo on and off for the last 5 years this year was the only year it hit triple overhead and the closest to this year was about 3/4 years ago. (Century swell) I was in Indo for both. I must be going to the wrong places.
@perikopalotespalotones2729
@perikopalotespalotones2729 5 жыл бұрын
@@littlellama8405 yes you definitely are going to the wrong places mate. I've been surfing Indo since 2009 and not only it gets triple but 4 overhead almost each year at least once. And I am a 185 cm guy... Indeed I have a 2x1.5 meter picture in the wall of my kitchen where you can see me surfing a 7 meters wave in Bali, I have measured it couple times already hehehh... Taken in 2012, they even said in magicseaweed that the whole bukit 'went nuclear'. Well Kelly Slater appeared by surprise specifically to score Padang and Sanur, so yeah it was such an epic swell if that guy bothered to travel half world, something good he was sure was gonna happen :) and it did. Triple+ overhead waves that were hundreds of meters in length....I've surfed 3 of the bukit waves in 4 overhead conditions, the only 3 waves there that handle that size tho...
@perikopalotespalotones2729
@perikopalotespalotones2729 5 жыл бұрын
@@littlellama8405 correct, this video is 3 overhead and some 4. Indeed I've seen once a wave in Bali go similar to cloudbreak, only once I saw it peeling that way, it was the swell i mentioned before. Actually only 1 guy was able to surf it with a board the size of a boat. We were in the water and all of us 4 got washed down by a massive set. I call it the day **** went like cloudbreak LOL. Are you from Fiji? Cloudbreak could easily be my favorite wave, before I was obsessed with size, now I don't surf but will get back to it.

When it is this big, there is not much you can do because of the speed. You can try to penetrate the water, but because if the speed, you just skid along the surface, then get sucked up, and then you are along for the ride.
