In my school every freshman was required to take communications 101. For us it was more than just about making speeches, it was about learning how to get along with people better, how to peacefully resolve conflict between people (even when you are one of them), and how to make a group project run smoothly. As a neurodivergent person who's never understood social cues, it was like how to human 101. @jeffreyugochukwu19422 жыл бұрын
Nah dude. It really is the major. Some majors are either not intellectually rigorous in terms of problem solving or don't have an actual hard skill (think of something technical like engineering, coding, medical science research, finance, etc...) to be of economic value towards the private sector.
@not.a.bot.2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyugochukwu1942 i get what you mean but in educational point of view they all are important just not necessarily needed or provide secure economic future. It doesn't mean they are dumb or useless.
@jeffreyugochukwu19422 жыл бұрын
@@not.a.bot. I mean, different fields are important for the sake of general knowledge, but economic marketability is pretty much the most important part of picking a college degree because this level of education tends to lead you towards jobs that pay at least in the high 5-fig range (at least $70,000 a year), which is more than the average trade at $40K-$50K, you have to worry about the student loans you'll have to pay back right after, and (if you do want to do this) have proper financial resources to raise your future family so that your children don't grow up with a lack of resources that you end up being the subject of a college essay as to why your kid grew up poor. At the end of the day, your main goal to going to university is to get a better paying career than your average trade, and if you're not here for that, you're wasting time and money and honestly would be better off going to trade school realistically; sure there's only certain trades that can make at least $70K a year (also company dependent), but at least they're not crippled in student debt and have a hard skill that can be of use in the private sector.

As someone who graduated with a Comm Degree and Masters in Corporate Communications I’m actually a little taken aback by this lol the main issue our world has is people’s lack of ability to communicate with each other in real time and build rapport and relationships because of social media. As a Comm major I learned about human psychology, body language, double talk, manipulative dialogue, public perception vs reality and how to counteract that, as well as how to interview, which my professor would videotape in class so we could see re-watch ourselves so we could understand our answers from a Hiring Managers perspective. I learned life skills that allowed to me understand the world I was going into. Since then I’m now a Sr. National Account Executive for a large IT Consulting company and make over six figures because of what my professors prepared me for. That sort of judgment without any knowledge or understanding is exactly why society at large is falling into a downfall spiral and will continue to do so until people start waking up and stop relying on technology so much to communicate for us and be vulnerable and put yourself our there and start understanding each other and building genuine relationships again.

People wouldn’t be getting manipulated into scams or tax fraud, and would be better at interviewing for their jobs, which being in IT Sales there are an alarming amount of people that do not know how to interview well. I also don’t understand comm major at first but now I realized that it runs so many thing, most companies often hire comms consultant to run public/media relations campaign, and most artists has their own third party comms consultant too, for instance when BTS attend and speak at the UN they run several tests and runthrough with their comms consultant before actually delivering their speeches, and a comms agency can receive around 6000 USD/month/client, so if they have 20 clients, that’s a 1.440k/year WITHOUT operating prices (any publicity/events/stunts done by the consultant for the client has to be paid by the client separately from the agreed quotation). Most companies hire comm consultant bcs these consultant have the knowledge, expertise and network that companies lack, with the growth of entertainment biz such as TikTok and KZbin comms major is actually very appealing

I wrote so many papers, worked with real companies, and came up with marketing strategies and media plans for them. The major itself has nothing to do with it, it’s what YOU make of it. I am realizing tho networking is much easier to do once you have something to provide to ppl - in college you don’t have much to give to someone else. Networking is also key to getting job and much better than what I did but hey it’s in demand so it worked out.

Legit. I think people who bash comms don't have the slightest clue how hard our jobs are. My professor once said... You can find the cure for cancer, you can find the key to end global warming, but if you don't know how to sell that to an audience, there's no point. To add on, Comms is also about how to handle the press, countering negative news about your company, and how to put your company/product/yourself in a better light. There are technical things to know when it comes to social media, articles that we put on newspapers, press conference and even speeches that we write for VIPs - all of which will lead to a better rep for you/your company, which means better sales, which means more money. Heck, even your favourite celebs & influencers most certainly have a Comms team with them. And it's 90% because of the Comms team that you are a fan of said celeb. So yeah, don't bash us because we're probably the reason you're a huge fan of something important in your life.

I don't think people realise how much of it is interrelated with Marketing xD At least my bachelor had all sides of communication involved: from Public Relations and Crisis Communication, to Online Branding and Marketing, Campaign planning and Internal/Corporate Communication and so on. We had skills classes as well, and classes where we learnt useful tools like using Adobe Creative tools, but we also had intensive courses of Intercultural Sensitivity and Communication, and honestly people underestimate the importance of being aware, understanding and adapting to others in personal and professional life xD It is not the dumbest major, and neither ridiculous. 😅 Obviously everyone who doesn't get that is just limited in terms of information they have, or I guess brain power to process the information 😂 Anyway, no major is dumb as long as you choose it because it serves a purpose for your passion or professional life. 👍

Women going into major debt to get a business major just to become an entry level HR rep that has zero need for a 4-year degree of any kind is probably equally as dumb as a communications major. I majored in human communications and it has helped me in my interpersonal relationships and professionally everyday...People are generally awful listeners and miss details others try to say. I went down multiple pathways with my degree from mental health, restaurant administration, and hr/payroll. I was able to beat out others with specific degrees and it was nailing interviews and being able to make a connection in 15 minutes. You're trained at positions so you generally just need to stand out in interviews. I don't have one specific interest and I chose communications so I could change careers when it fit my growth best. Although I’m alry working a couple of years in following my comms degree, the comments section still gives me hope about my major. Sometimes ppl really do think that comms is just common sense and I would be doubting the years I’ve spent in university even at this juncture, but when they need to pitch an event or promote a cause or write sensitively about / amidst certain issues (among several things), that’s when I realise people do not know what they’re talking about. In the broadest sense, comms would entail managing relations and perceptions and if you dont have any form of comms mindset or framework, you’re not going to successfully convey any message to anyone, let alone to the right people.
