I’ve been eager to try this out in my team. Even if it’s still lacking some complexity compared to Figma, you can cut cost when it comes to licenses. And as a designer I think it’s easy to get too attached to the tools. We should be able to realize our ideas with whatever we have at hand. A good designer would be able to create good solutions even with an open source software IMO.

Yes exactly! Competition brings better products and pricing too. I've been using Figma for most of my stuff. However, I like experimenting with tools like Penpot or protopie from time to time.

Guys! This video is an opinion piece :) the more competition Figma has, the better products we will get as users and consumers. I do believe that Figma is the better product, however encouraging tools like Penpot will help even Figma and the industry improve.

Sadly Figma has become the Meta of design tools. Its a monopoly now because of the ecosystem and partnerships the team behind Figma have created. For Penpot to compete, there will be so many things at play- familiarity with shortcuts, advancement in code handoff, modular approach to the design system.. all of which I see Penpot trying to do but still not quite there yet. For the moment it looks like a tool that is emulating Figma but without all the advanced features. I hope they can prove me wrong, but at this point I dont see it.

I do agree with some of your points. Also, I feel for a free and open source project and a team that doesn't make big bucks yet, they are doing a good job. I see a future where there is more than one UI design tool that can compete fairly in the space.

It's not really a replacement for XD or Figma, yet. There needs to be a little more work done to the new component system to more easily and intuitively allow for states/variants. Once that's done, it's a legitimate replacement. In addition, it also needs a migration tool to migrate XD files to penpot, however, with a fully functioning component system, that wouldn't be hinderance to using it for new projects.

pen pot is still buggy.. I used this in Feb/march when Figma made the dev mode paid.. The Arboard making was smooth af.. but when i Imported multiple svg (5-6 artboards)... it started lagging... the lag went so bad that i have to shut down my browser... Never happened this with any other software... But As a open source it needs time ... and open source softwares usually gets better overtime... Edit - Still laggy.. after latest update

It's getting closer. If you compare pricing and org structure then Figma fails. It's all about evening the odds and is a personal preference at the end of the day. Figma has plugins, better teams, better prototyping features etc. for sure. But I've seen some teams barely use 50% of Figma features but are paying the higher pricing. This could be a cool alternative.

Actually, PenPot has two foundational advantages: 1. Direction: Figma is more like a huge container transport truck trying to do a 180 degree turn. They’ve started by making a prototyping software centred around designers and now trying to make it dev friendly. The way auto layout works, the fact that there’s no css grid, that they don’t even seem to be thinking about units other than pixels, and that there’s no box model (separate margin and padding with the ability to set negative margin) are exactly remnants of that and I don’t know if they’re ever going to be fixed. Or anyway sooner than penpot which started as a dev platform. Penpot is a rapid electric car. 2. Licensing. Figma to *insert web dev platform here* and Figma plugins rely heavily on the end points that the Figma team gives you access to, because the rest of the platform is completely closed source. Penpot started as an open source app and plan to keep it that way which means that when plugins/code transformers do come out they are going to integrate much more smoothly and be way more powerful. Also means that .penpot files have a better integration chance with any other design software than .fig files will ever have.

I disagree. It's all about the fundamentals. I tried very hard to make PenPot work but ended up just burning a tonne of time and went back to Figma. Wishing the team all the best as would honestly love to see them succeed. However, Figma is so polished that $12 a month pales into insignificance when I put a value on my productivity.
