Film is expensive and film cameras are old, is the way moving forward or are my future prophetic ideas way off the mark?

Film and digital are cool in their own way, I will say that digital cameras can save you money, at the same time, the fun of film is waiting for your pictures to come back. I think we should have a wide variety of options instead of one replacing the other

Digital cameras are expensive especially a mirrorless. And Digital is such a neck breaking disposable technology. The cameras coming out now are already obsolete.

In HS for me in 04-08 they offered us photography classes but I sadly didn't take them because they where doing film and I was already into the digital movement. I really wish I would have taken those classes for for home development process.

I loved the Flip video cameras. I had several, the later ones were HD. I thought the form factor was perfect for the use case. Thanks for this trip down memory lane!

When it comes to the tapes I've seen setups that take that tape look and convert it all through digital. I think its just a small like converter box? Not sure exactly what it is called but I've definitely seen them when I was looking into this a few years ago.

I recently repaired my double super 8 camera and bought a couple cameras at a flea market for cheap - a super 8 (takes cartridges) and 16mm. The reason I decided to try film again is that I recently remembered that it's quite fun to load a projector wand watch a film this way, even if it does not have sound. So, I'm going to expose one film with each of the cameras (to test them, but also to see if I like it) and if I like it, I'll take a film camera on my next trip somewhere. Normally I have a HDV camcorder, it has pretty decent quality and I noticed that when filming to tape I do it better than filming to a SD card. With a camera that films to a SD card I create a bunch of clips and I either not film enough of what I should have or I film pretty much everything with the idea that if I don't like it Ill just delete it. With a HDV camera, I know that I'll be too lazy to do any editing, because that will take a long time, so I film while thinking how it is going to look when playing the tape. It seemed that my vacation video with this camera turned out better. Also, when the camera shows that the tape has something like 5 minutes left, then I'm inclined to film something I consider less important to "finish off" the tape as I don't want to run out in the middle of something I consider more important.

Soon the thrift stores and ebay will be plentiful in film gear once the baby boom gen passes on. I still visit the thrift stores in hope of finding some age old treasures but personally can't buy too many different things since I'm no collector

This definitely brought back good memories when my father used 8mm? I think that was the tape and had a waterproof housing and would dive with the most dangerous sharks around the world in the 80s and 90s. He was featured on CNN for capturing the migration of the hammer head sharks. He had hi8mm camcorders everywhere and vhs machines. Hundreds if not thousands of tapes were in the house and editing was happening all the time. I never had a interest in video it always leaned towards photography. And the idea of getting in the water with a Mako Shark or something was not for me. No more diving for them, now at 79 my dad and mom have a horse ranch.

How about apps like 8mm Vintage Camera or Super 16 are great. Works well with phones. You'll get a couple of years' subscription out of $39.99.
