Red Bull

9 жыл бұрын

In the spirit of progression, Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher have devised a new 6 meter catamaran that is redefining what's possible on the open ocean. It's a vessel that can reach eye-popping speeds of 36 knots while hardly being affected by the ocean conditions. How, you ask? Because it doesn't sail on the surface of the ocean, but uses a hydro-foil to lift the cat above the water and over the chop while still maintaining maximum speeds. So, we'll let you be the judge...is this the future of sailing?

lorenzo44554 Of course it is marketing but in fairness to Red Bull, when they could not afford to do more they sponsored Olympic sailors in the early 90s. At the time I did not even know what Red Bull was! So I agree that they deserve credit for doing something more meaningful and exciting then just taking adds at the Super Bowl.

If a fraction of the companies that exist had a fraction of the amount of fun that red bull does MILLIONS of people would be having a BLAST like these sailors do. I agree Red Bull is an awesome company! I don't like the taste and go out of my way to buy some red bull because I enjoy the entertainment they provide. Thank you Red Bull I will be a loyal follower. To the full time dude living in poverty, yes it sucks. You won't ever get to do this shit. BUT you can drive a shifter kart. Do a search on that shit man!! Balls out fun on a BUDG. I learned how to swing a wrench, did some CL surfing, bought an old shifter chassis, then an old Honda 125 shifter engine and put all the shit together. I'm talking OMG speed and G's. Fk super cars those things are for jokers. Shifter karts are crazy fun and cheap.

Kaushal Pandya That depends on your location. I would recommend trying to find yacht clubs in your area and see what they offer, that way you can meet new people while learning. I recommend people who are willing to answer a lot of questions (most passionate sailors will go on for hours on any subject :D) -- that's the main thing I've found to be helpful. Making mistakes and asking questions is what got me from zero experience to loving crewing in a few days! Stay determined -- there will be unpleasant days. That being said, even in chilling rain and lots of chop, I always wind up grinning. Good luck! If you want me to help find good locations in your area, feel free to PM me.

No. This is NOT the furture of sailing, this is extremely well engeneered present. The Future is foiling without a foil - using ground effect - and lift off above that lethargic Element! I'm not an engeneer so I have no chance to calculate how to create enough power to lift off a hull that's designed for flying through the air - not for floating in water - but once this problem is solved, the rest will not be a big problem anymore... ;) The Prototype of a ground effect sailing vehicle will be the first vehicle in history that really deserves the Name "AIRSHIP 1"

Its a good thing to us sailors. We actually earn a little pocket cash that way. One "wheel" where the rope travels (no more than 0.5-1 cm radius) can already cost you around 60€. Stuff break all the time and it all goes straight out or our pockets. Its a very expensive sport and we appreciate some sponsors and stuff.

Why do they have these inverted bows? My guess is it's a design thing, but doesn't it make the boat more likely to cartwheel when hitting a wave?
@hijtohema
@hijtohema 8 жыл бұрын
+TavernSenses Those inverted bows are what lifts the hulls from the surface of the water. The curved/horizontal parts work like a wing on an airplane: the shape of the blade creates high pressure underneath it and low pressure above it creating lift. Simply said.

@whitebaron1993
@whitebaron1993 9 жыл бұрын
The wing (fins) are capable of producing enough lift for several reasons. 1: The mass of the boat is kept to a minimum so the lifting force required is reduced. 2: The boats have to travel at relatively high speeds to achieve the levels of lift seen in the video. 3: perhaps the most important, the wing is travelling through a fluid 1000 times denser than air and can be 1000 times smaller....kinda :L

How do you control the pitch of the boat, is it the position of the sailors constantly trying to balance it?
@danielscott4514
@danielscott4514 9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Battle If they're anything like other foiling boats (foiling moths in particular) then there are usually movable control surfaces on a horizontal "T" fin on the rudders (like the elevators on an aircraft). On a moth, they're controlled by twisting the tiller extension (the steering stick the helmsman is always holding).
@danielscott4514
@danielscott4514 9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Battle Actually, having said that about tiller extensions - I was watching a video the other day about the new Foiling A class catamarans, and they seem to have gone for a system where the centreboards (those two L or J shaped things the boat is foiling on) can be tilted back and forward with a control line to adjust the pitch - so that could be what they've done on this class of boat too.
@Matt02341
@Matt02341 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Scott Its a combination of the two. changing the pitch of the dagger foil (j-shaped thing) and adjusting the control surface on the "upside down T shaped" rudder.

@danielscott4514 8 жыл бұрын
+Vinnie Ice Gallagher Thanks for the info! :) I guess these are a one-design class and all the boats in the competition are identical? (i.e. no different setups on different boats to suit different crews' tastes?). How does the rudder + centreboard attitude control thing work? Does the crew adjust the centreboard and the helm work the trim tabs on the rudder? - or are they somehow linked together?

It looks like downhill on a single wheel bicycle- .awesome trick but useless in rough seas completely. This foil shape and balance makes also surfing almost impossible at a glance. The rest is perfect, spars, floats outrigging - really looks nice!

Its not a trick my dear, its just another way to go faster and faster, like trying to be aerodynamic while downhill on your bike

I guess a racing kitesurf of windsurf is still faster then these things. Anywaty good luck to the designer and sailors for this new class.
