Is THIS The Hardest World Record to Break? - Men's 800 Free Record Progression

In my last record progression video about the absurd difficulty involved in breaking the women’s 200 fly world record a lot of you posed the following question: which men’s world record is the hardest to break?
And while there can be cases made for a couple of different events most people mentioned one men's event in particular: the 800 freestyle.
So how did that seemingly untouchable world record get to where it is today?

There was a little mistake. Olympic record is hold by Mykhailo Romanchuk, not Bobby Finke. Romanchuk did it in heats, but didn't repeat in finals

400IM. Took 15 years for Phelp's record to be broken. Any attempt on Marchand's record will take a mighty effort.

It might be one of the hardest WRs for everyone other than Marchand himself. I strongly believe Marchand will break his own WR at least once or twice more in his career

Sun Yang was doping for one and three swimmers have come within a second of it in the last couple of years so I expect the 1500m WR to get challenged in Paris.

Sun Yang is synonymous with doping so all his wins should be dismissed. This is why he is banned from competing.

Supersuit era record. This record is worthless discussing. Not hte athlete fault - those were just the rules then. There's a reason the best in the world can't get within 5 s of it despite all the training and scientific progression of the sport.

7:37 in textile is better than 7:32 in a super suit, by quite a margin too. The super suit is worth about 1 to 1.5 seconds per 100m.

What metric are you using to say this? I think that the super suits advantage is partially dependent on the technique and build of the swimmer. It is also important to note that the suits are credited with increasing endurance rather than solely raw speed

Loving the historical look back portions of these videos. I’d be super interested in a history of competitive swimming vid-how gear and training techniques changed over decades. I can’t imagine swimming without a cap and goggles.

Super suit was in during 2008-2009(2010) ,any WR set by a swimmer who wore it within this time window is subject to differentiation. It partially explains why those WRs are too tough to break.

So how could one set an 800 record while swimming a 1500? After Mark Spitz popularized the flip turn in early 70's, the wall wouldnt be touched until feet hit after flipping. Then? Cause you cant guesstimate in middle of flip...

Daniel Wiffen broke the 800m short course record in December. That was set in 2008, also in the banned swimsuits. So the long course record from 2009 could go at this year's Olympics

Kind of boring ones, but i think you should do world record progessions of the 50 free and 200 IM, i think they are both going to be broken in paris so it would he cool to see how they got to where they are and who will break them again
