I think it's 4-2DM-4, with at least one of the strikers being an aerial beast. I'd choose defensive midfielders over central midfielders because they pick up central runners so much better and tend to be in better positions for headers.

It certainly is a strong shape, I do prefer the 5-2-3, though. It offers me a lot of options and is as versatile as it gets.

I think the 5212 DM AM is the best one this year. The segundo volante role is too good this year

I used to hate the 4-3-3 DM as well, but managing in lower leagues forced my hand to go back and re-invent it. 4-2-3-1 seems "leaky" there coz you simply don't have the personnel for it. Usually it's that vital AM position. Also, it seems that this year's "4-2-3-1" is based around 2 DMs instead of CMs, which I've found quite odd at first, but quickly realized it was an improvement. I'm still trying to mess around and find a way to make 3 CBs work, but I'm always either short on the right kind of personnel or I'm messing up my tactic's flow by overthinking it. I really wanna make the middle CB step up and basically nullify the need for a DM in the 4-3-3 DM, but I either end up with a weak minded bunch of Defenders or I loose versus wing-play. Might have to try 5-2-2-1 WBs DMs AMs :P

I hate the triple playmaker in central midfield. I'm fine with a double playmaker, as long as they don't operate on the same line or channel. So a DLP(D) is nice in this because he sits back and controls the buildup, while the AP(A) looks for a spot from which to make the killer pass. I also like the RP, if you have the right player for it. But then you need a CM(D) or BWM(D) to lock down the center. But two playmakers on the same line, the game slows down too much. Agree about shifting the mentalities of the playmakers based on who the matchup is in the opposition DM.

Dunno, I still prefer playing 4-3-3 rather than 4-2-3-1. 4-2-3-1 might be better if you press high but 4-3-3 gives you more balance. My interpretation of 4-3-3 is this: SK(def) FB(at)-BPD(def)-BPD(def)-FB(at) DLP(def) CAR(sup)-CM(at) IF(sup)-IW(at) AF(at) Positive mentality, shorter passing, work ball into the box and low crosses Counter more, short play from the keeper to defenders Mid block but pressing more often So basically what I try to do is to release IW(at) on the left or CM(at) or AF(at). Triple threat that is pretty solid defensive-wise at the same time

4231 is always solid but unspectacular for me. I prefer a 433 narrow in fm23

The last time i played with a 4-2-3-1 was in FM12 and i though it was OP back then. In fact i thought it was so OP that i never played it again in all my FM saves since and i play 3-4 saves per year. I find it too easy, lets say, less challenging, to create a good 4-2-3-1 because the formation itself kinda guides you about its roles and duties, i think. What i mean is, its much more likely to go wrong with a 4-4-2 than with a 4-2-3-1. And where is the fun in that? (ofcourse that is a personal think, no disrespect to those who prefer to play with that system)

With a DLP(D), you can make that player a Box to Box, a CM(S), or a BWM(S). You don't want a Mezzala in a double pivot, because his runs will take him out of the shape defensively. You don't want an attack duty standard for the same reason. But if you need a goal, switching to the attack duty makes sense. If you have a DLP (S), then I would play a BMW(D). Because you want one player to lock the center down.

I find that with 4231 you score alot of goals, but you have to be careful of the midfield roles or you will concede alot. I tend to pair a CM on support with a BWM

@@bigmaguire9714 The best results I can get usually comes with a BWM on Defend and a DLP on Support, or vice versa. But I usually still have trouble scoring consistently, and is almost always leaky in defense. On FM23 in particular, I've been leaky in defense with 4 at the back in general, but it was a problem for me on FM22 and FM19 as well :(

What's your forward like I think the formation is great at creating scoring chances for the striker but perhaps leaves other players a bit out of chances. I have just finished a season in 4th tier of Germany and my striker scored 53 league goals next highest player had 10

@@robertflintoft5614 I've tried different approaches, but most commonly end up with Pressing Forward, Advanced Forward, Deep Lying Forward, or Complete Forward. The AF usually end up isolated for long stretches of the game, the PF seems to shoot a lot from distance even with Shoot Less Often ticked, the DLF falls deep and doesn't get behind the defense often enough to get good shooting opportunities and CF does a bit of everything. I've tried False Nine with a Shadow Striker behind him as well, but they just seemed to find themselves in the same areas too often

@@crossy6398 it might be a bit of a lower league approach but a four attack of two advanced wingers on attack a AF and attacking Mid with pass into space I find gets you going well and sees a lot of balls into the box. If you have a good jumper and header of the ball in the AF spot

i hate 424 this year with volante and stuff so boring, 4231 is great but i wanna see you play against liverpool u gonna lose 4-0, 433 is the best this year and also after many hours i found the solution, break the record unbeaten with chelsea 44 games

There is no meta in FM, it is not FiFa. 4231 is the easiest to fit in the players along with 4123. These formations also allow some mistaking. 41212 or 424, 4312, 523 also work great but they are hard to build and sustain.

Yes, there is. The game constantly evolves and with it, its match engine who on a yearly basis provides certain roles with more benefits. RPM 20, Mezzala 21, CM-At 22, Segundo Volante 23 and so on and so forth

Also, TMs last year, AFs this year, IWs in 21, HBs for the last 3 years (and now BWMs in the CM and not DM works particularly better for gegenpressing sides. Football itself has METAs for the various levels of talent. In the elite, it's the 3box3, in lower levels it's the 442 (which was gone for so long because the 433 revolution around 2010 shaped the sport for a while)

@@cushdy10 He is great but I can see that he is focusing too much on game exploits rather than joys of the game or joys of the football in FM 2023. I feel like he had a different balance in that sense in the past.
