Spain was the game I grew to be most powerful. Before the end of absolutism I had over 10k dev and no other nation had more than 1k. I got Austria, Hungary, Burgundy, Aragon and Naples as PUs. Conquered all of France, Poland, Balkans, Italy and southern Britain. I'm sure I could've formed the Roman empire or conquered all of europe or whatever but at that point the challenge was so insignificant I just got bored and went on to play Mewar

Id say France is the most versatile litteraly since it starts strong, and its expansion routes to become stornger is litteraly every direction even Tall France is extremely powerfull due to being close to the English Channel, but Spain is incredibly versatile indeed, only downside is that its strenght mainly comes from its colonies and other expansion routes makes it weaker than it would be if it went full colonial.

The problem is that if you focus too much on it instead of colonies you lose on so much money and troops...

Personally I'd give a nod to France in this category, can play the diplo HRE game with the diplo rep, go colonial, strong mil ideas ofc, I'd argue they're pretty versatile as well

Castile into Spain was my very first game and I still recommend it for complete beginners. Easy first war with Granada to learn how the army, manpower, sieging, allies, and peace deals work. Scripted PU, easy early game colonization. Many more reasons but is also a fun nation to come back to once you have more experience

One of the few games that I played in ironman was starting with Castile, I formed the complete spanish colonial empire and got the achievement for all the american capitals and I formed the Roman Empire with the mare nostrvm achievement, I also got many other achievements in that one game, but the one that I didn't get and hurts me that I couldn't do it was the one that requires you to complete all the GC missions, I was only lacking the get austria and become HRE emperor. I also got very lucky when I was trying to get as many PU with many different nations and I got one with Great Britain, I think that PU wasnt even contested because of my power.

Well, I'm currently playing as Holland (didn't form the Netherlands yet) and France is already at the verge of collapse. First time I barely won independence war against France, and only because I had Burgundy as allies (Burgundy got into personal union with France, and that also got me into same situation). Second time was more fun. With the help of England, Colony, Venice and Papal State, I pushed my way into the provinces required to form Netherlands. One of them were allied with France, and I got 1k money. Bad part: Entire HRE formed a coalition against me. Let's see how the situation develops... And, Pope is from my country. Lithuanian situation is also funny, cause Jagiellon dynasty is not only controlling Lithuania, but also Danemark. Poland has it's own king btw.

Good sir with the.... great... hair. I must sadly disagree with your choice of "most versatile nation". This is due to the nation of Denmark(Scandinavia). The Nation of Denmark (Scandinavia) gives many of the same benefits as the nation of spain, in that the ideas gives plenty of boosts to military. It also offers great opportunities in that you can choose to keep the Danish ideas for a colonial focused game. Wherein you can get colonies quicker than Spain and Portugal. Moreover, the nation of Scandinavia(Denmark) gives countless ways of expansion. 1. You can focus on bringing the germans to their knees by military or mercantile might. 2. You can reclaim your viking heritage. Conqour England and make the world tremble at the mere mention of your navy. 3. You can have a colonial game wherein you compete with spain, Portugal, France and England to secure the most gain from the new world. 4. You can seek to dominate the north by breaking the Polish Hussars and the Russian bear. Making you the Rome of the north. 5. You can develop your nation into the industrial backbone of the new age. Truly rivaling all your foes. 6. You can roleplay the Historical struggles of the Union and the state of Denmark 7. You can powerplay and easily become the naval or economic hegemon. So. To sum up. The nation of Denmark (Scandinavia) gives some truly unique experiences and let's you explore every nook of the game. As a new player, it will strenghten your resolve through great loses (if kalmar falls) and a great comeback. This is why i truly believe Denmark (scandinavia) to be the most versatile. Both in terms of gameplay, experiences and learning opportunities.

France is a way better choice for most versatile. You have colonial options, HRE expansion, lowlands expansion, italian expansion with two routes (one of which gives basically unlimited use of catholic bonuses), big naval and army bonuses, etc. Also one of the few countries with extra missions and ideas during the age of revolution. Spain is just, really fucking boring in all honesty.

France is more powerful in the early game and I would say much more versatile. You have early conquest against Portugal and England, along with Spain and Aragon. While also having the ability to become involved in Italy and Germany. You have so much potential as France which is what makes it such a powerful nation in the hands of a good player.

Ally Portugal and Aragon, focus on fighting wars in the Maghreb first. Maybe push into Italy if you get a PU on Naples. Don’t fight France head-on unless you have a reliable ally like Great Britain or Burgundy.

@@Derukai If you can spare the reform progress, use it for governing capacity. Admin tech and some idea groups will also give you more. And once you hit 1000 dev you can upgrade your government rank to empire which will give you a ton more to use for expansion.

My Spain play through I decided to remove all the colonies I could and colonize any coast to control all sea trade nodes. Went well, but little sad I didn’t finish off my French or Dutch rivals ruling from their minimized colonies before the game ended.

Any non colonial Spain, is just Aragon. But the problem with aragon into Spain. Is the fact that you won't get any new mission. So basically it's better to integrate Castile manualy and form Sardinia-Piedmont or Two Sicily and then Italy into Roman Empire.
