We take a weekend trip to LA to check out a used mast lying in a boat yard, that one of our viewers told us about. Is this the mast for Duracell?

Hi Matt Big Aluminum stick trivia One of the craziest projects I did back in the day when I was young and foolish was converting an America's Cup 12 meter into a coast guard certified 24 passenger day sailor. The regulations required the mast to be aluminum, 90 ft long, and weigh a thousand pounds. So they filled the tube with acid to etch it and then filled the base with lead to bring it back to weight. Also the rod rigging was ovalized to save windage. How to turn $$$ into hundredths of a second. Also, the hull had 7071 aircraft aluminum ribs that would turn to mush if they even smelled salt water. Not a problem--- just haul out after every race session, strip the boat of all sails, and hose it out. One of the puzzles was the purpose of the huge hydraulic ram that came with the boat. Turns out that they threw the mast head forward about six feet on every downwind run to get more projected sail area. I trust your mast didn't have all the state of the art improvements! I still have the bow man's halyard from the boat. In order to optimize halyard tension on the main sail they used a two part halyard and a mast lock. In all the time they sailed the three boats in their program they couldn't figure out how to build a halyard lock that wouldn't jam, so they regularity had to send the bow man up to the mast head to beat on it with a hammer, often during a race. When you are at the top of a 90' mast in Honolulu harbor you can see all the way over the Pali to the ocean on the other side! LOL

Don't cut down the mast if you don't have to!!! having the extra height is so beneficial for light wind days on long passages. Really helps to keep you daily average up. Matt, glad that you have been able to find a very good mast for the yacht. As tall as it is, it should provide a lot of power to the boat. I don’t know if you plan to keep it as tall as it is from some of your discussion in the video, but either way it looks to be a great mast. I know there is still a lot of work to be done on it and I wish you great success in making it work great for your boat.

How about using foldable arms with inflatable floats(like bananas) on them instead of a deep and heavy keel? This would make a foldable trimaran. Since Duracell has already lost its keel, it may be a good opportunity to think outside of the box. Water balast tanks could also be included in the folding structure

The Problem with Straight Spreaders is that you have to have the BackStay permanently attached and you have no safety like Sweptback Spreaders on modern Sail Boats. It the Backstay is left loose or breaks, the mast can come down. sweptback give you Safety and you can Bend the Mast for flatten the Main Sail.
@Tomm9y
@Tomm9y Жыл бұрын
Also, running backstays are required on straight spreaders, that's to stop the middle of the mast from buckling forward. They increase risks, as a crash gybe can bring down the mast. It's more work for crew. The huge loads on such a large mast are probably better handled by in-line spreaders.

Bonjour Matt, What a long thing ! I understand why you could'nt bring it back with you by plane 😁 More seriously, has it the exat size your wished, or is it smaller / longer ? smaller could be a possible issue, but can a mast be cut if too long? How do you know if it will be strong enough for your boat? I can't wait the moment where you will explain us how you will position it as you changed the hull and so its gravity center. Amicalement, Raphaël

yes, we can share those numbers when we get into the mast mod project. for now: new mast will be same height as original (75 feet above the water) and we're changing from in-line to swept spreader. We'll get into the nerdy details soon enough :)

Will the anchor be located too close to the waterline. As in won’t it be bashing into the waves with even a small amount of swell. I found the cutouts don’t give you an idea of how much surface area the spade has.
