I have been using this pack for years. I love it so much I bought two because if you like something REI does, buy multiple. They will inexplicably change it for the worse, or just cancel it suddenly one day. When my current one falls apart (no sign of that happening any time soon) I will repair it until I can’t and then use the second one I bought for hopefully another 5-7 years. I expect to use no other backpack for a decade or more if all goes well. Unless something better comes along. But right now, this is to me the best pack on the market, full stop. And Miranda still loves hers, even though she’s got the LiteAF now.

Working at REI, I've learned a few things. One REI changes clothing and gear a lot...buy multiples. Osprey's design meetings are really just safety meetings. I still cry about the Ariel/Aether. And it seems Altra has been attending those meetings. And if any company makes the perfect thing everybody loves, they will discontinue or ruin it. I just got the new Flash Air 50. I like it better than the 55. And don't get me started on ultralight...

Also, totally true story - I commented on this video literally on my way out the door for a backpacking trip with Miranda, and on that trip a chipmunk ate some of the padding off my pack! 😂 Will probably be able to fix it, but the hilarious timing of that happening after I left this comment is crazy.

Love this pack! I actually returned a very expensive ultralight pack (Zpack Arch Haul) because this pack felt/carried lighter and better with the same packed weight. Carries water like no other because how close to the hip the water is. This pack feels like a nice hug when wearing it. It’s the best light pack for me.

We both, hubby and I, have the REI Flash 55 and LOVE them. We have had them for 2+ years, so we have used them multiple trips. We love the tilted pockets for water bottles, no need to have buddy hand you your drink without taking pack off. Love this pack!!! Also, when I got mine, since I am only 5'1", it was hard to find a good pack that fit and was lightweight. The REI clerk immediately got this in XS and put it on me.... voila! Perfect fit. So women looking for a great pack should look at this one!

I second this! I'm 5'3" with a 15 inch torso. It's difficult to find a good pack. I've tried Osprey and Gregory both were returned. I've even tried kids packs. I bought the REI Flash 55 XS with a medium hip belt (I'm also a little round). I carry 22 pounds 5-6 miles a day consistently and it's the most comfortable pack I've ever worn!!!

I bought one of these to replace my old Osprey pack... was super excited. Then my son took it. So I never got to use it. But he's used it for years and we have 4 scouts who use the Flash 55. Its my go to recommendation for a widely available great option that you can go into a store and try out. For newer hikers having that option to go test it out for fit is really important.

I've had mine a few years now and couldn't be more satisfied. I tried numerous light and ultralight packs and this one surpasses them all in almost all categories. I feel that I was fortunate enough to have gotten the grey color option. I hate that olive oil color lol!

I have the, I believe, 2022 version and I love it. It does not have an adjustable torso length, but is very comfortable. The only downside is that if you have the medium and your waste is smaller than 32”, you won’t be able to get the hip belt very snug.

That's my concern with looking at getting the Air 50. I'd need a medium for the correct torso height, since the small in the 55 was a little tight. But my waist is a 32" size. At least that's the pants size I wear. 35" if you measure my waist. Gotta love US vanity sizing. :)

I love mine from 2021! They made more than a few “updates” to this newer version that I dislike quite a bit unfortunately, but still a great pack that I talked 2 friends into getting. It’s a great value, especially when you get it on sale!

I’ve heard a few people annoyed that the front pocket got changed from stretch mesh on the previous version.

@@BackcountryExposure Yeah, that was one of my complaints at first because I can fit SO MUCH in my stretch pocket, but then again, since I typically lean my pack up against rocks/trees, it would be nice to have that protective strip down the middle. Plus that stretch mesh just is not as durable as what they use now, so I understand the change. I use a Durston Kawka 40 too and the mesh pocket is not stretchy, but it is more loose, allowing me to fit more gear in there. This one on the newer Flash 55 is just too tight for me. I really dislike that they got rid of the waterproof brain AND waterproof phone pouch with the nice magnetic closure. I’m sure the adjustable torso length is a positive for some, but my pack already fit perfectly, so the added weight from that was a negative for me. Last and least important, I hate the color schemes they went with this time lol I love the look of my gray one! All in all, none of my issues are deal breakers and I’ll continue to recommend this pack to people getting into backpacking. Love your channel, Devin! Keep up the good work! 🤙🏼

We were just at REI this afternoon and I was checking out this new version, and all the points you made, I was thinking to myself in the store even down to the color. Like someone had mentioned, I should have bought two of them when I purchased mine a few years ago, not that there is anything wrong with this new version but having the pervious model and seeing how they changed a few key things makes me glad I have mine. That being said, I would still recommend this pack to anyone asking advice on purchasing a great all around pack!! Thanks Devin for all the good work! I have this pack and I love it as well! I spent a lot of time looking at many different ultralight packs and I found often two problems with other packs. 1 Ultralight packs are very expressive and when you try them on the can be a bit uncomfortable because the have to skimp on certain features to save weigh. 2 many ultralight packs are so simple you can't organize you gear very well. Hiking in the northwest we get a lot of rain and you need more gear then other places, so for that reason I wanted a pack that has good organization and flexibility. This pack ticks all the boxes for my style of backpacking. I also love the water bottle pockets an excellent design. I bought the update version and I don't believe they lost to much with the changes. Thank you for the great review. Love your channel!!!

Thanks for reviewing what I consider the best all round pack. With the Flash 45 (discontinued?) this is my favorite pack. Given that I've been hiking/camping for over 50 years and owned a dozens packs, I think that's saying a lot. My packs are the non-adjustable versions. Size M. Fits my 18.5" torso perfectly. Generally carry 19 to 24 pounds. If you can find the old non-adjustable model, it's worth considering. It's a little lighter than the new one. Basically same design/features. There's a short video on my channel comparing the 55 and 45L packs. I find that in summer when my gear is less bulky the 45L is perfect for a couple nights. Sometimes I just remove the "brain" on the 55L. So versatile. A bear canister fits inside both packs! Great channel. Thanks

This is my favorite pack! I have the previous, non adjustable torso, version in size small and it fits my 17.5 inch torso great. They really knocked the fit and comfort out of the park with this one. I got mine on sale for 20% or 30% of which made it a steal in my mind. I own packs from a ton of other brands and if I could only choose one pack it would be this one. My only concerns are the somewhat delicate fabrics because I often backpack where there is a lot of sandstone, and one end of the sternum strap ran right down the bottom of the adjuster and fell off. Luckily I was able to find it. The fit, comfort and features totally make up for any concerns I might have. I can't wait to get out this summer and use this pack!

The only addition I would make to this pack would be a renovable Y-strap I could put in place when I remove the lid. It would be perfect for a bear can. Other than that this pack is spectacular.

I imagine there would be a simple way to DIY that with the buckles from the removable compression straps and the lid straps. I believe the webbing is 5/8" in size, so it could be done. I'm gonna look into that and see how difficult it is. But even just from the factory, absolutely that would be a great addition. Thanks!

I love my Flash55! I lucked out and found one in the REI resupply because it was missing a chest strap, nothing else was wrong with it. They managed to find me one and all in it was less than $100. It’s been a great pack!

My wife loves hers and will hike with nothing else for backcountry trips. It is set up amazingly well. I, however, had to return mine after one trip. I sweat to the extreme and once the pack straps got slightly wet they would no longer stay secure and kept coming loose no matter how I attempted to adjust it. I wish that didn't happen to me because when it was setting correctly on my back / shoulders it was practically perfect.

@@BackcountryExposure Gregory Baltoro 75 was my original pack (still love and use), then downsized to the Flash 55, and have now recently replaced that with a Gregory Zulu 55 (which I haven’t had out yet, except to train on my local trails). Also have a Gregory Citro 24 which I will be using on the West Highland Way in Scotland next month.

I love my Flash 55, first pack I ever owned. With all the hype behind these cottage industry packs and ultralight etc I put it away, thinking there might be something better. There isn't!! I just wish they still made the 45L, or came out with a 40L, as the 55 can sometimes be overkill. Only complaint is they got rid of the stretch mesh front pocket.

They have a Flash Air 50L now that comes in under 2#, but doesn’t have that front stretchy mesh pocket either. Makes you lose a lot of usable real estate. I don’t think it’s as comfortable as the Flash 55, but I can’t quite put my finger on why,

I would recommend taking a look at the Granite Gear Crown 3 60. It regularly goes on sale for just under 170, weighs less than the flash 55 at 1,130g for the long torso version, is very durable so far, and has pretty much every capability I want. Obviously if you have a flash 55, it's not worth the money for the ounces or features, but if you are researching what to buy, I would take a look.

Of the many many packs I've used over the years, this Flash 55 might be the most versatile option I've used when you look at a one stop, do it all pack. It's bigger than I need for most trips I do in the summer and warm weather trips, but it's so flexible it works out well when not filled to capacity. I also love the CS40, and my Waymark THRU 40 has been my go to for several years.

Great review. Couldn't agree with you more. While it has some shortcomings that you didn't much get into, I find it to overall rival any cottage industry backpack that I've come across and I've had several. With a few tweaks (including the hideous colors:) it could beat almost all cottage industry packs. And the Flash 55 fits me like a dream. Unfortunately, the only cottage company that I think had a better backpack is one that you know well and has gone out of business.

@@BackcountryExposure I put a review/comments on the REI website some time ago with suggested improvements. It would not take much for this pack to be great. Nothing fancy, just straightforward in the field performance. So many companies are chasing the lightest, most waterproof back, etc. but this one has so many excellent features particularly the water bottle reach. Absolutely excellent weight carrying. BTW, hate all packs with a brain but this one can be removed as you showed. 5'6", 17" torso, wear the small for reference.

Do you ever find that the water bottles dig into your back when you have it on or have a heavy load. It appears that would maybe be an issue? I tried the first version on in a store a few years ago, but I didn't find it super comfortable. Might have to go try one on again.

you're timing is impeccable. I've been debating this week on the flash 55 vs some other pack. Also looking at the flash air 50 cause it's nearly half the weight (but also 50% more cost). Curious if you had a specific reason for the 55 vs the air?

I started testing/using the Flash 55 before the Air 50 was released. So I haven’t had a chance to even see the Air 50 yet. I haven’t dug into the specs of the air too much yet, but I am intrigued after some research this morning. I guess based on that, is the weight savings worth 50% more? If not, then the 55 may be the better choice. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Genuinely curious what your opinion is on the Osprey Exos 58L. They are $160 on Sierra website and feel very comfortable to me at 32 lbs. I tried the REI backpack and i think the osprey fit better. Love the vids man.

That's a good question. The only Exos I carried was several years ago and was the 38L. At the time I enjoyed it, but many changes have been made since then. If it was comfortable for you at that weight, then it ought to be a great option. It's a popular pack for good reason. I just can't speak to my own experience with it.

I compared the Exos 58 and Flash 55 back to back at REI. I was as professionally fitted. Carried 30 lbs in each for about 30 minutes. The shoulder straps on the Exos were pretty uncomfortable to me, no matter how we adjusted them - too narrow, the padding to thin and padding not far enough down the strap. Definitely not interested in the Exos after wearing it with weight. The Flash 55 felt surprisingly comfortable, is thoughtfully designed, and adjustable. I had no idea REI was making such good gear. Very impressed! I just had a Gregory Focal 58 delivered (was out of stock when I was at REI the first time) and intend to do another loaded back to back comparison between the Focal 58 and Flash 55. I plan to load up to 30 again and then try 40 to simulate a long water/food haul. The Focal should have five or so extra liters of room over the Flash (REI measures the volume using all internal and external pockets whereas Focal measures volume using only the main compartment and brain (so exterior pockets aren’t included in the 58L calculation). Also on paper Focal has five more pounds of capacity (30 vs 35). I’m buying for through general backpacking and through hiking so the higher volume and weight capacity of the Focal are appealing, but the the cush ride of the Flash is going to be hard to pass up!

Those anemic Exos shoulder straps don’t work for me, feel like torture devices. I recently used a Kakwa 55 for a multi day Grand Canyon trek. Solid pack and love the Ultra fabric 🤩! However was pretty hot 🥵 in the desert heat due to zero back ventilation. The Flash has seemingly better ventilation, comparable suspension, optional brain (for just a few more oz.). I’m still considering the Kakwa and maybe add an after market ventilation insert during warm treks.

I just have to disagree! Went to rei to buy a new pack a few years ago and was sold on this after putting weight in it and walking around the store. I didn’t have anything to compare it to and figured this is as good as it gets. Then the osprey exos 58 was right there and figured why not. Put weight in it and walked around and immediately said to myself, (this is the one). Really, there is no comparison. This pack is so feature rich, please compare. Carried 40 lbs in this little bad boy on a 4 day trip recently and it was awesome! I will say that I don’t have the updated version. The top lid is not easily removable but has hip belt pockets if that’s your thing. If you’re new to backpacking or even a pro and looking for a pack that covers all the bases, you found it!!!!

I tried the Flash 55 but it sadly wasn’t for me. The overall fit on the shoulders was too small amongst other fitting issues. Looks like they updated the water bottle access which is awesome! My friend has this pack and loves it. If the pack were to fit me, I would probably love this pack.

It's hard to make a pack fit every body type. That was a very apparent struggle with when I was working at Waymark. How to create a pack that can fit everyone without having 80 different sizes.

They have a lighterweight one called flash air 50 would love a comparison video but i have heard the one you just did is the best pack for your $ .. just hate the color

The color is pretty wild! I'd love to now test the Flash Air 50. :) I think there's enough of a difference from the research I've now done that a comparison is warranted.

They should have left the stretchy front mesh pocket on it from the previous version. This was a downgrade, not an improvement.
