L-brackets, foldable L-brackets, and a mountCollar that is rotatable from horizontal to vertical. Can you imagine how many tools have been made to help you mount your camera onto your tripod vertically? This might seem like such a trivial matter until you're shooting a high pressure project and you suddenly have to switch orientations while perfecting your framing with no time to spare.
Here are some options and a rundown on how ‪@SmallRigGlobal‬ has been pushing the evolution of the camera mount:

I have the collar unit and it does NOT work with lens adapters and I use a Canon 24mm t/s lens on a Sony a7Rv everyday. So I need to order the foldable bracket.

Nifty little mountCollar from SmallRig, I just hope they come out with a version of this suited for other camera brands. Been a SmallRig user for a long time and would like to still be in the same "ecosystem" when purchasing this mountCollar.

That looks a very good solution - I would only need it for vertical video, I use my fluid head and its handle as a mock shoulder rig. This helps me get pretty smooth pans very fast without the need for a gimbal tripod or monopod. There is now a Ulanzi Falcam version of the second Smallrig design - if youve not seen the Falcam clips they are great - I have them on all my equipment

WOW!! SmallRig is on a roll ( no pun intended). When I got the A7SM3 and found the L-Bracket with the slot for the twisty flexible LCD Screen I thought It was great. But with the new A7RV it failed but I used a A7M3 bracket that gave access to the battery with the A7RM4 but then the discovery by accident of the Folding L-Bracket on a camera store web page not I ordered it and was here the next day, I also got one for my A7SM3. Not a film person so the this new rotatable is more up that ally, I like the protection of the L-Bracket and the cages have no side aca swiss attachment

An L-bracket is the most useful accessory I have ever bought for a camera. I have a Sony A7RIVa with a SmallRig L-bracket, but will have to think about this new device and whether the expense will be worth the small gain in convenience. (Really, how much does it take to change the orientation of a camera with an L-bracket? The SmallRig L-bracket also maintains the lens position when switching from one orientation to the other.) However this appears to be a better design than the Atoll, although the Atoll can rotate 360 degrees (allowing the camera to be in a horizontal, right-side-up orientation when suspended from an inverted tripod column), there is a lens release button access issue with it. The Atoll's ring appears to be larger (contributing to the release button access issue), but that may make it compatible with more camera body/lens combinations (because they didn't go the route of small clearance between the lens and ring, as did SmallRig). BTW, a very informative video. It has earned Nicco a subscription!

This looks really cool. I already have the folding bracket for the a7r v. As i do not need cable management, the folding parts main benefit for me is an L bracket that does not getting in the way of the movable screen. The con for it, is the bottom plate sticking out to the side and the necessary joint makes it less comfortable to hold . Not a huge deal, but it is there. The second option with the ring looks great for heavier lenses that do not have a tripod foot, such as the Sigma 40mm f 1.4 art which weighs 1.2kg and is front heavy. I have been concerned about using it on a tripod with that much weight on the mount. This looks like it solves somewhat by moving the weight a touch more forward. Also ability to rotate it quickly is nice. Thanks, very well presented
@davegrenier1160
@davegrenier1160 Жыл бұрын
This device won't help with the weight of a lens (that doesn't have it's own "foot"). The ring doesn't make contact with the lens (as Nicco explains), so the full weight of the lens is still on the camera mount. With such lenses, it merely repositions the point of balance on the tripod head, which is not the same thing as supporting the weight of the lens directly.
@michaelkhalsa
@michaelkhalsa Жыл бұрын
@@davegrenier1160 yes, you are right. Realized that after typing it in. Would help slightly with weight distribution and nodal alignment.

You mentioned in the video the 4148 is compatible with the Sony A1? Have you tested this? I'm interested but can't seem to find anything online to that says it's compatible with the A1. I also read someone asking if it was compatible on the product page and Smallrig responded "Please kindly note that they are not compatible". Would be great if you could confirm if it works with the A1.
@NiccoValenzuelaPH
@NiccoValenzuelaPH Жыл бұрын
Oh thanks for that. I assumed it would be because all the previous L-brackets that fit all the mentioned models also fit the A1. I will do my best to get a hold of a loaner from Sony to do a fit test myself. Will update here if ever. Thank you for that.

@NiccoValenzuelaPH

It may need a few inches more space because of the “foot” of the collar which you can rotate to whichever side has more room but generally not much of an adjustment in terms of keeping the camera inside the bag

It should. The collar does not come into contact with the lens, the mounting still relies on the base plate and the connection with the collar. As far as I can say, any lens smaller than the 200-600 can fit

Nice review! Do you know if the new rotatable bracket 4148 fits the Canon TSE Tilt-Shift lenses when using the Sigma MC-11 mount converter for Sony cameras? I use these Canon lenses with my Sony cameras for architecture, but the MC-11 has both a rubber cover for the USB port on the collar, as well as a lens release button. I bought the foldable lens bracket (#3984) for my Sony A7RV and have used it on several shoots, but I'm very disappointed with it. Because of the foldable mechanism, it's way too "spongy" when shooting vertically. I shoot a lot in rough conditions, and need to keep my hand on top of the camera pressing down to make everything as stable as possible. But when doing that with the 3984 foldable bracket, the camera can move as much as 2-3 mm up/down without much force, making it unuseable for me since it's screwing up the verticals.
