The Lockheed Constellation is perhaps one of the most elegant airliners to have ever flown. When Howard Hughes bought into TWA in the late 1930s he sought a new airliner that could fly further, and faster than anything before it to give TWA the advantage in the market. He approached Lockheed, who accepted the challenge. Hughes not wanting to give up the advantage ensured that all design work was kept secret and it wasn't until late 1941 when the project finally was revealed to the public and other airlines. America's entry into the Second World War in December 1941, however, meant that all orders were quickly taken over by the U.S military and as it was not a top priority project, work on the Constellation program significantly slowed down. It wouldn't be until 1943 that the prototype finally flew, but still when the war finished in 1945 only 15 had been delivered to the U.S military. Post-war the Constellation proved to be a massive hit with airlines all across the globe. Its was fast and also had pressurization, one of the few airlines at the time to have so. This allowed it to fly higher, where conditions tended to be smoother, creating a more pleasant and safer experience for passengers. Upgrades continued and for the next decade Constellations would provide vital and important services for airlines around the world. The U.S Air Force even showed renewed interest in the design placing orders in 1948 for machine under a new designation of C-121.
