Exclusive footage from 'Send The Bird Up' in collaboration with Warby Motorsport, of their jet powered boat, 'Spirit of Australia II' - filmed at Blowering Reservoir in New South Wales, Australia.
On Blowering Dam N.S.W Australia in 1977 and 1978, Ken Warby set the World Water Speed Records of 317.60 mph (511 km/h) in his jet powered boat, Spirit of Australia - a record that still stands today (Wikipedia 2005b).
Now, the Spirit of Australia II is the new, second generation, Outright Unlimited World Water Speed Record Challenger, which is set to break the record this year (2025). Sadly, Ken Warby passed in 2023 however, the Spirit of Australia II is a second generation jet powered hydroplane (designed by Ken Warby) and driven by his son, Dave. Spirit of Australia II has almost 50% more power than the original boat and is powered by a Rolls Royce Orpheus 803 turbojet, from an ex-Italian Air Force Fiat G-91 fighter (Warby c.2012).
The Bristol Siddeley Orpheus is a single-spool turbojet developed by Bristol Siddeley for various light fighter/trainer applications such as the Folland Gnat and the Fiat G.91. Later, the Orpheus formed the core of the first Bristol Pegasus vectored thrust turbofan used in the Harrier family (Wikipedia 2006).
The Blowering Dam in New South Wales, Australia is a major ungated (rock fill with clay core) embankment dam with concrete chute spillway impounding a reservoir under the same name. It is located on the Tumut River upstream of Tumut in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. Purposes for the dam include flood mitigation, hydro-power, irrigation, water supply and conservation. The dam is part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme (Wikipedia 2005).
Pre-flight safety briefings conducted with the boat crew and all flight operations were performed under licenced, qualified pilots.

The jet would've been better and I'm a Bowie fan. My dad took me to watch the Alabama Hustler make a world record back in the 70s. Thnk it was a j49 but the sound was incredible

I had the pleasure of getting my picture taken with ken worby on this boats test run on blowering dam in when his son drove it about 7 years ago, absolutely mind blowing boat an a funny old guy. I've still got the hat he signed for me and the photo of me an him together RIP old mate 😪

@@greggreen1025 Yes everyone is well aware of the last few attempts after Warby’s record run. In most record attempts, one doesn’t test for 15 years and go outside the crafts optimum reliability range. There’s a reason 10-15 year old cars don’t cost nearly what a new car does, the reliability is much lower with their age.

I went to school with one of his boys, from his first missus I think. Good fella who’s name is on the tip of my tongue, I suppose it was in the late 70’s. Brave man Mr Warby, he should have been Sir Kenneth Warby, I would have listened to him commentate cricket, if he did I might have picked up a bat if the baddest smartest scraping the ground with his cannonballs chitty chatted with Ritchie Beneau ever happened. I’d have watched him scratch an itch , see if I could learn something. Does he have a bronze statue cause he deserves 10 at least. If anyone beats his record, or thinks they did you’ve gotta say, Sorry, your too late, Ken got that trophy ages ago, and he’s keeping it.

@@colinsmith2005 I met Mr. Warby in Detroit where he had a replica of Spirit of Australia at the Detroit Gold Cup Hydro Plane Race and one year he raced in a Flat Bottom Drag boat at the Detroit Gold Cup. I talked with him and he was down to earth, for such a famous person Truly one of the World Legends of Power Boating. RIP👍👍

The last 2 men that attempted to break this record died trying. A cautious approach is one way to lessen the risk. Perhaps you could put your hand to drive it?

@@greggreen1025 Risk will persist even if taken the most cautious approach bud, you could test for 50 years and a rouge disturbance in the water to change the angle of attack could happen at any time. I’d say a decade of trials is a pretty cautious approach. The longer you wait, the older the boat gets.

Agreed, however, that risk will be present in 5 years of further testing or tomorrow. The risk goes up, in my opinion, the older a machine gets. I think it's time to go for it as that's what it was built for, this will be a 15 year old boat eventually.

@@VetteWay2Fast For sure, and they do maintain it as well as they can, and what your saying, thats one of the risk factors. But if you look at the history of water speed records, evey time someone makes a run without enough fuel, or in not perfect weather, or a malfunctioning boat, they crash. So yes, i think you have a good point, they may have to build a new boat if it gets too old.

@@mikh9202 If they build a new boat, then the process of extensive multi year testing starts all over. Eventually you kinda have the “blank” or get off the pot if you know what I’m saying. I completely respect the people risking so much for this record so I would never try to rush someone into this, but if you build a water speed record boat and don’t go for the record in a decade, is it really a serious contender or a publicity project.

It’s a shame the negative Nancies on here don’t understand the drone won’t pick up that fabulous sound of the boat, hence the music rather than the sound of the drone… maybe one of them could provide you with a microphone for the next run to capture that noise they’re all craving 🤷‍♀️

I believe that the Union internationale Motonautique, the official body that recognises the World Waterspeed Record, does not accept records set by boats with aerofoil wings. This may become the fastest vehicle on the water but will not be officially recognised. The same goes for Richard Noble's Thrust WSH project.
