They seem like a great idea - depending on their individual cost. Personally I think they'd be handy to have in the ute when you're checking fences, find something broken or cattle have busted through and need to fix it quick then and there. With the strength test, you're never going to be able to physically strain the wire up to those sorts of tensions anyway using the bobex and a spanner (unless you're straining it elsewhere on the fence from another repair).

$3.67 each when buying in bulk. Not really all that economical if you need to use many. Great tool for a quick repair.

We use thousands of this sort of permanent tensioner in orchards every year and would have to say that having the tool with a handle on both sides of the tensioner gives you heaps more stability. Also for the price of 30 of these you could get 100 of the likes of klaw klip and buy the tool as well.

But you have to go to NZ to get them which will cost you a bit if you are in Oz.

My property borders 3km of state forest with multiple fencelines so get heaps of damage yearly from trees and limbs coming down, the Bobex looks very handy and I will try it, problem is the cost as I would use around a 100 a year, but will try definitely, I watched one of your segments on joining wire using spiralflex claw clips and a few others, I cant find it to save and watch again, would you have an idea how long ago you made those sessions. Love your channel, helped me so much being new to farming at the tender age of 65 is a challenge at the best of times.

Great video as always Tim, if I'm not mistaken the square socket in the end appears to accept the 1/2 drive on the ratchet.

According to their website, it sounds like it's 3/8" drive.

In the past, you've talked about knots being cheap (free) and strong. I feel like just tensioning the end and doing a new termination knot would suffice, I wouldn't use this for temporary repairs, it isn't like I would be making two loops and hooking them on. A objective video, even considering it was a promo, but, for the price I couldn't do it-innovative though.

Short fence runs? Ratchet strainers are unbeatable...nothing else comes close!

Yeah it’s not for everyone. One thing you quickly appreciate in my position is that there are many different types of fence and conditions and even more different types of people managing them. I assume you still use heavy soft wire too?

@FarmLearningTim Yes here we use the traditional barb wire and woven wire. Some of our fences are over 100 years old. Thanks for the reply.

What I want to know is why all the wires are getting loose in the first place, (apart from trees falling etc). Isn’t there a better way to get it right in the first place.

Horses and cattle kinda weigh a bit and always think the bloody grass is better on the other side of the fence. Also barbwire is great for scratching ya arse on according to my horses🤣🤣🤣🍺

Why bother with a socket, it looks like it just makes it a little more awkward, compared to using the ratchet alone, a T-bar would be even better.

I know you're very experienced but please wear gloves when working with barbed wire. I have a nasty hand injury from barbed wire...

Great in theory, but sometimes I don't have a set of gloves with me when the neighbours cattle have busted through the fences during the night and I'm shooing them out at 7am then fixing the fence.

Why not just put 2 loops in the broken wire ends and put another piece of wire in it and use a fence stretcher? This is just a gimmick that people are going to make money off of that you don't really need.

Avoid using two loops on HT wire mate. Use correct knots.

@FarmLearningTim We don't use high tension wire out here and Wyoming. We use old whatever we can scrounge up and my boss isnt going to buy me a gimmick stretching tool when he can can send me out with nothing but a stretcher and some barb wire

This might be ok for short lengths of fence but on a farm with lengths kms long would t work But a good idea but I think there are better and cheaper options out there for lose wire
