Is Tipping Necessary on DoorDash? Or is it a bid required for service?

To tip, or not to tip? That certainly is a question...
Is it a tip, or a bid? Are they employees, or independent businesses? If I just can't afford to tip, can I really afford to eat out?

I've never seen a tip from someone who says they'll give a cash tip, they're also more likely to give a 1 star if the merchant messes something up or you're a minute late.

I had one last week, but the vast majority of "cash tip" orders are a lie for sure. It's very rare, definitely less than 10% of them.

The Door Dash model is a bastardization of the delivery model of the past where a driver got an hourly salary a delivery fee for the use of their vehicle and got to keep all tips. In addition there was a delivery zone that was not delivered out of. Door Dash removed the salary part of the equation as well as the zone restriction . By doing that they made the driver a private contractor . Lately Door Dash offered earn by time which is a prorate of an hourly salary, but as a result removed the base pay. So the driver is not being fully compensated by door dash in any of the cases and like you say the "tip" has become the basis by which a driver decides to take an order or not. Both Door Dash and most customers still think of it as a "tip" and Door Dash even refers to it as such on the order screen. What makes matters worse for customers is Door Dash charges up to 40 percent more for the food than it would cost in the restaurant and charges a delivery fee of up to 6 dollars. Also Door Dash entices customers with 0 delivery fee on some restaurants (mostly fast food) drawing in no tip customers because they believe the delivery is free . So you literally have the three parties involved - Door Dash , the customer, and the driver - seeing it from completely different perspectives .

To answer a few points. Back when I drove for Domino's when I was a teenager, I had an hourly salary, it was $1.68/hour the pet delivery fee was $1. We relied entirely on tips. We still have an option on DoorDash to earn by order instead of time, and I do, it pays better, even with shitty tips. And door dash does not set the cost of food z the restaurants do. Door dash DOES add the fees, which $2 go to the driver

Definitely a bid. You can increase it and add a tip after, after all. It's a marketplace, basically an auction. The commodity is the service of us delivering their food. The customers are competing against each other for priority just as much as they're competing with us for acceptance. We compete with each other for orders. All together, we meet somewhere that works for everyone. Huzzah, lassiez-faire capitalism doing its thing just as America intended! Any smart driver is going to calculate how much _per hour_ an order is worth and make a decision on that basis. Time is money. The same applies to customers. If you're hungry or need your food in a timely fashion and can't bother to do it yourself, you can _pay_ for that convenience or you can _not_ pay for it and probably not get it. Good luck, stay safe on your journey across America. Lots of crazies on the roads!

You could get a real job. Like Amazon.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not lol. Amazon employee suicide rate is too high, no thanks for me. Making a living as an independent contractor is feasible, I've been doing it for 4 years now. The mental health difference from being on my boss's schedule to making my own schedule at-will is night and day. I don't particularly care to have to piss in bottles, and I like actually having a poop break whenever I need. No tip, no trip. Gotta teach these third party delivery platform customers that it's a bid for _my time and expenses,_ not a tip. Base pay is often $2 or less for an order. I see $2 orders and muscle memory decline them even if they're right across the street. Time is money, a single order is at least 15 minutes most of the time and often more. $2 x 4 = $8/h, I don't do _anything_ for 8 bucks an hour. It's basic economics. Tip $5, all of a sudden that's a $7 order for me. That's 21-28 bucks an hour, I'll deliver _that_ order as expeditiously as (safely) possible. I make 25/hr with my other contract with no material expenses other than drinks, that's what my time's worth to me. Offer me less, you won't get my time. It's a market, just capitalism doing its thing. Every participant is competing with every other participant. You're not obligated to make a fair bid, you can try to undercut the market if you want. If someone values their time at $6/hour or is tricked by Doordash's psychology into accepting every order, they _might_ take those $2 orders, but most of the time those orders rot on the shelf because anyone paying for gas isn't running a charity service.
