You talked about these "drug seekers/doctor shoppers" they are making things difficult for those of us who honestly have pain and need help. I have a extremely bad back due to an injury with sciatica along with chf, neuropathy, and pvd. I am in pain every day all day. I went to the hospital 2 days ago with extreme swelling and pain in my legs and lower back. I had approximately 10lbs of fluid on my legs and the emergency room treats me like an addict looking for pills because of my age so I get sent home and told nothing is wrong with me even though my heart monitor was beeping like crazy because of really bad pvc's. In February of last year I went to the emergency room 3 times in 4 days because of chest pain and was told every time that nothing was wrong with me. I went back a 4th time and demanded that they do something so I was transferred to another hospital where I was told that I had a major heart attack and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Now I have damage to my heart that cant be fixed and the doctors were the ones that told me there was nothing wrong and sent me home.

I am sorry for your experience. Chronic pain is not currently well addressed within the medical profession for many patients. The best results come from good doctor-patient therapeutic alliances which sometimes take years to form.

I wholeheartedly agree re the doctor-patient alliance. That can sometimes be difficult due to some insurance plans not being accepted by all medical groups, so if you change plans sometimes you have to change doctors. I keep an Excel spreadsheet of my doctor's visits, hospitalization, etc. For patients not computer savvy, a notebook designated for medical information can be used. It is very important and helpful for the patient to keep track of medical info, especially when multiple doctors are involved. You cannot leave everything to the doctor. I enjoy your videos. I've been on Tramadol for over 5 years so this was of particular interest to me. I have osteoarthritis, autoimmune disease, NSIP and my lungs are scarred from having pneumonia 8-9 times in last 3 year. I have been on Prednisone for over a year, resulting in many bad side effects, including osteoporosis. I'm on oxygen as needed. I'm in chronic pain about 90-95% of the time. On the rare days I am in very little pain, I can go without Tramadol with no withdrawal symptoms. I try to keep daily amount to 4-6 pills. Thanks for the educational entertainment!

I’ve had severe Migraines since I was 13 (about 20/month). I’ve endured massive pain and disruption since then. I lose my vision for about 2 hours with each migraine. I didn’t understand Tramadol. I’ve been on Tramadol for 20 years and it has been a Life saver. You must time your dosages and manage your diet. If you begin to Up your dosages that is where the problems begin. At one point When I was super busy I was taking up to 1200mg per day for several years. My doctor wanted to help me get back to 400mg per day. Every 6 months we taper to zero for about two weeks and do many tests along the way. It kept me from being on Disability and the irony is that I became an entrepreneur because of the Occular disruptions. With Tramadol I couldn’t imagine dealing with laying down in a dark room for 20 out of 30 days again. I used to hide when I worked for the private sector until my migraine vision loss subsided. I am now over 50, strong as an Ox. Get off of the OXY & Acetaminophen for your livers sake. But manage it well.

I have taken Tramadol for pain related to rheumatism for at least 10 years. I love it because my flareups come and go and I don't need it every single day and don't have addictive side effects. It also doesn't make the pain go away completely, it just makes me not care it is there. This is good because I don't end up doing physical activity that could increase injury.

About 8 years ago I began to experience extreme burning pains that began in the toes of my left foot and which would spread very quickly to the whole limb and then the other foot. I took Ibruprofen which kept the pain manageable allowing me to walk and went to the doctors expecting to be diagnosed with gout. That was ruled out very quickly and 2 years later, after many tests, I was told that unfortunately I had CRPS and that there was nothing they could do to help me except try to find a better pain medication. For me Tramadol has been a blessing, taking it 24/7 has slowed my thought processes down a bit and my memory isn't what it was, but I can work and live a relatively normal life. Without it I would be in serious trouble.

You are welcome and thank you for the thank you. I take 200mg a day on average. Occasionally, when I have been physically very active, or am very stressed my CRPS 'burns' through, pun intended :) and I have to increase the dosage. For me its addictive nature is not a consideration since I have no other choices, Ibruprofen was rotting my intestines at 600 to 1000mg a day. I have never felt the compulsion to take the doses at regular intervals, to satisfy my curiosity I have occasionally managed to go an entire day without a dose, possible if I have nothing to do but chill out. No cravings or other withdrawal symptoms so far. It would appear I have not developed a tolerance either, the dose I take now is the same as I began with 6 years ago. I am very lucky that Tramadol works for me, many with CRPS get no relief whatsoever, I cannot imagine how they manage from day to day.

Hawkfum, I developed CRPS after breaking my foot 20 years ago. I had a surgery to repair the break, then another to take the pin out of the bone because it was bothering me. That's when I started to have horrible pain and after seeing a pain specialist, was diagnosed with the condition. After trying all kinds of pain meds, which didn't work for me, I finally got to a pain specialist, who told me it was CRPS. He told me the same thing you were told, there's no cure and no treatment. My pain specialist recommended a spinal cord stimlator, which worked, but I had to have it revised several times. All of a sudden my pain subsided and I didn't even need it, so I had my neurosurgeon take it out. It's been 3 years and haven't had any problems since.

I've been on tramadol for over 7 years for lupus . I have tried the others that are antidepresants they don't work. I really wish my doctor never gave them to me. I have tried many times to get off them. I get sick, vomit, restless leg and arm. Severe sweating, insomnia, brain flashes, mood swings, pretty much the same as heroin withdrawals. Not that I have tried heroin. I don't have an addictive personality. I smoked for years and quit cold turkey. The withdrawals are the worse thing I have ever felt in my life and I have been almost dead with septic shock from a motorcycle accident .Please find something else for your pain. It may not effect everyone the way it does me. But what if it does? I'm perfectly fine as long as I don't go more than 12 hours without it. One good thing about it is you don't get that weird high that you do from other opiods. It just takes the pain away.

Alexa Burnette Had the exact same experience. Tramadol withdrawal was the worst experience of my life. I had a nurse try to tell me you can't be addicted to it! OK..... so that's why I had restless legs, sweats and chills at the same time, nausea, headache, anxiety, nervousness, moodiness and felt like my blood was jumping around under my skin. After a day and a half without it, a dr gave me a pill and within 30 minutes i was miraculously better. The Dr who prescribed it told me it was hard to become addicted to so I wasn't worried about it, but it's def a serious drug and I'm glad it's now considered a narcotic because it didn't used to be.

E. Garceau What was the pill the Dr gave you. I would love to get off this horrible drug.I can handle most of the withdrawal but that feeling like your just going to burst into a swinging hysterical rage is what I couldn't stand. I think I really could kill another human being while going through the withdrawals .Along with the insomnia and severe muscle pain. Like the flu muscle aches times 100.

Well, what I meant when I was given another tramadol all my withdrawal symptoms went away. Now I'm on suboxone and it's a miracle drug! I'm so happy I got on it. Only certain Dr's can prescribe it and you usually have to enter out patient rehab which is what I did, but it's totally been worth it. I couldn't stand how angry, sad and depressed I was going through withdrawal. I couldn't live that way. You should google suboxone providers in your area. I'm finally back to being my normal self without any cravings.

E. Garceau Isn't that an opioid also? I want off everything not to replace one with another. I may just have to go to the hospital and be sedated for a week or two to get off this crap. I once took a valium when I was having horrible withdrawals from the tramadol. One of the times I tried to stop. The valium worked great for a couple minutes. Took all the symptoms away. Then they suddenly came rushing back. There has to be a drug that works on the same part of the brain as tramadol. Tramadol works on a different part of the brain than even vicodin and the others. Can't remember which part but I did a lot of research to try to get off this horrible drug. I have lupus and refuse all meds for it. I just wanted something more than Tylenol for the pain. Hard to trust doctors when they have no idea what they are giving people. This drug is horrible. It should NEVER be given for long time use.

Well suboxone does have to be monitored, but what's great is there are no highs or lows, and no withdrawal symptoms. Yes if you ever go off of it you would have to be weaned off slowly, but you can also take it forever if need be. Regular opiods work by plugging up our receptors so that a certain area of the brain becomes abnormally flooded with dopamine giving us a high or euphoric feeling. Because our brains are so used to those receptors being plugged, our brain feels weird when there's nothing there. So in turn we became restless and crave an opiate to fix that feeling. Thats where the suboxone comes in. It sits on those receptors and makes them feel full and complete without plugging them, so that we don't have that empty feeling or the withdrawal symptoms. Our brains are permanently changed and will never be the same as before we became addicted to tramadol. It's a real possibility that we will always have some type of craving even post opiods. But suboxone is great because it doesn't make you high, but you also dont get the lows of sadness and anger like when you're coming off of tramadol. I truly feel like my old self now. Eventually I'll prob wean myself off of the suboxone as well,(under my drs supervision) but im just going to take my time because right now I feel great. I would say the only negative is that while im on suboxone I can never have another narcotic, even if I really needed it for some severe pain or an injury. The reason why is that if I were to try to take a tramadol or vicodin while on suboxone, I would immediately get violently ill and be thrown into withdrawal symptoms. So hopefully I stay healthy for awhile. I hope this answered some of you're questions. Let me know if you have any more.

I have Sjogren's Syndrome which causes severe myalgia pain. Tramadol has allowed me to have a good quality of life for a few hours each day. Without it, I would take Tylenol or Ibuprofen which are certainly drugs that can be dangerous! I am very careful to take only 3 -4 per day(even though more would feel better) and no alcohol! Being conservative with tramadol is the key. Also, if I eat less sugar, I have less pain.

Hi Carol! I'm sorry for your pain and you are right...nothing completely takes away the pain, and those who do not have it will never understand it! One thing that has helped me is limiting sugar and other foods that cause inflammation. There is a book "The Immune System Recovery Plan" by Susan Blum M.D. that gives so much good info about autoimmune issues! I hate taking drugs and found that if I choose to let food be my medicine it helps a lot! Blessings! K

Elizabeth Reynolds I'm so sorry! I remember being so sore in every muscle I had in my body. I could barely walk. It was pretty embarrassing to have a seizure in a restaurant in front of people but in hindsight it was the best thing because a nurse was in the restaurant and able to calm my partner down because she knew I was having a seizure and that in a matter of minutes I would come out of it. When I woke up I had fireman all around me asking me what day it was, who is the president etc. and I couldn't answer any of their questions at that point. It's a scary thing!

been taking tramadol on and off for a few years now because i suffer from sciatica. For the past 6-7 months sciatica has been in my left leg but for the last couple of days the pain has switched into my right leg. Hurts really bad ... never started having sciatica until i was pregnant with my youngest son. My waters broke at 24 weeks and i managed to hold on until 32 weeks. Guessing the lack of water made him damage a nerve. When i got it the first time it lasted over a year ... well, my son is gonna be 10 in June and sciatica has come and gone over the years since and has lasted MONTHS at a time. The only thing tramadol has done for me has made me tired and nauseous. Even if I've taken one or two pills i can feel the effects at least 2 days later! So i try not to take it and only when im in desperate need. Im also on diclofenac pills too. Naproxen didn't do a thing for me. I have Essential Thrombocythemia so have to be careful what i take. Also on anxiety and depression meds as well. Life sucks so bad right now ..... 😭

It made my life and my family's life horrible and I even ended up in a 30 day inpatient rehab. Dr Vaughan I agree with you about Ambien. A little over a year ago I was in the hospital and asked for Ativan to help relax. Doctor said no and gave me Ambien even though I told him I couldn't remember why but I'd quit taking it. I was on high flow oxygen, they gave me the Ambien, didn't turn on my bed alarm, and later (I don't remember this) I took out my IV, took off my oxygen, got out of bed (we think to go to the bathroom), opened the room door instead of the bathroom door, got out of the room and into an empty patient room where, because of lack of oxygen, I passed out on the floor. A nurse happened to find me because they were getting the room ready for another patient. I was purple from lack of oxygen. I could have died or been brain damaged from lack of oxygen.

Where I live (on the East Coast) every Emergency Room has what the doctors are calling "crack downs" and let me tell you, the doctors are not happy about it (and of course, the patients aren't either). The so called "crack down", as a very kind E.R. Doctor called it, was caused by the DEA. The doctors have been threatened and told that if they continue to prescribe scheduled pain medication then they will lose their license. So, they're hands are tied and they aren't happy about it from what I was told. They will no longer (or can't) give you even a 10 or 12 count of pain meds to take home ((which was the common practice because those 10 or 12 pills would get you through until you could make your follow up appointment with your regular practitioner)). 10 or 12 count isn't that much. That is no longer "the norm". Now they only write/type up two prescriptions for pain which are, 800mgs of Ibuprofen and 325mgs of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to be taken together. Everyone is different and some people may get some pain relief from a low dose of Tylenol but I don't. It won't even provide relief for a headache but it absolutely does help bring fevers down for me so it certainly has a purpose but only to bring down a fever (for me). Now, Ibuprofen....this is being prescribed and handed out like candy. A dangerous "candy". I say that because as this good doctor talked about, the NSAIDS have some risks. The risks can become serious if you're taking them alot. I DO receive pain relief from Ibuprofen (depending on what the pain is, of course). Now, on to the changes that I see going on in the Emergency Rooms. For a long time, they would diagnose and treat you with medication while in the E.R. plus send you home with a prescription of (like I said before) about 10 or 12 pain pills which were always one of the following....Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Codeine OR Propxyphene (which was Darvocet but has now been taken off the market due to the medication causing cardiac problems). As far as Tramadol? Haha!!! Not once have I ever seen an E.R. doc prescribe it. In fact, they seemed to down right despise Tramadol and would rather prescribe Codeine or any other narcotic. Maybe it was because of the seizure risk. I don't know. Now in 2017, if you go to the E.R. with let's say, a severe tooth infection with abscess, plus a swollen face the size of a baseball and bruising, the only thing you will get is I.V. Toradol (Ketorolac). Toradol is an NSAID and a strong one. It works great for me (depending on what my cause of pain is) but you cannot take it long term because it can cause some serious issues. 3 to 5 days is the longest you can take Toradol. So, okay....Toradol is a great NSAID but this is only ok as long as you don't have certain medical conditions. Toradol is now the most commonly given pain med. in the E.R. through I.V. route but the E.R. will not send you out with a prescription for it. IF you're lucky enough to have a kind and understanding doctor, they will usually be nice enough to help you while you're IN the E.R. & might give you 2 Lortabs or 2 Percocet tablets but that's it and that's only while you're under their supervision inside the E.R. Last year, the doctors could and would send you home with a prescription but those days are now gone. Atleast they're gone where I live. I went in to the E.R. because I got in to an accident (not severe) but was knocked loose and began to swell SEVERELY. I was lucky and had a wonderful E.R. Doctor and staff. They were very caring, they did every test that was needed, I did receive Toradol for the swelling & pain, it wasn't helping the pain after awhile and when the bruising began showing. So, the doctor comes in, examined me once again and bless her heart, she felt so bad for me and gave me 2 Lortabs. Then, she sat down and began to express her aggravation about what she called, "The crack downs" that have been put on them. She was upset because not only was I honestly in pain, had a clean record with no history of receiving controlled medications or pain meds but she could also visually see how much pain I was in because my face swelled up so badly plus bruising started. She said they're not even allowed to send people out with pain medication who are in there for a broken bone!!! At that point she and the staff made their aggravation known becauae they've been put in this position and they WANT to help people and wanted to provide proper pain relief but couldn't. I won't say that this doctor was on the verge of tears but she was upset......like a combination of anger and sadness because they are wanting to do their job & help people but at the same time, the DEA has them scared. *This isn't right! It is NOT ok for them to threaten doctors who are doing their jobs properly and it's NOT ok for people to suffer in pain if it isn't necessary*. I had a terribly painful 24 hours but was lucky to get an "emergency" visit with my regular doctor who had no problem helping me control my pain. I am not talking about a large count of pain meds because that amount was NOT needed. I simply needed the smallest amount that was going to help me have some pain relief while my temporary injury healed. I know my comment is long but I'm angry. If a good E.R. Doctor and staff are saddened and angry about not being able to provide proper relief to patients who are in real pain.....then something is very wrong here. For goodness sakes, in Canada you can buy tablets *OTC* that have 8mg of Codeine plus Tylenol and Caffeine. There's also a muscle relaxer called Robaxin. It doesn't provide euphoria and apparently it's not like stronger muscle relaxants (it certainly isn't "enjoyable" but it does work wonderfully for real muscle aches) and that too is sold *OTC* in Canada with Acetaminophen in it and it's called Robaxacet. Its in a box, right on the shelf with other OTC pain relievers. There are several medications that you can buy OTC in Canada and other countries (some not so safe, depending on the country) but in the the U.S. you can't get much of anything without going to see a doctor and HOPE the doctor is good and compassionate enough to help you. At one point there were news reports (and you can find the news report videos right here on KZbin) and the reporters were telling the public that Imodium (Loperamide) was becoming a new problem amongst addicts and that they were "getting high" from it. LMAO! I'm surprised the pharmacies here didn't put it behind the counter yet with the Sudafed. I mean this has reached the point of ridiculousness. It did a long time ago to be honest but now, it's just horrible. Oh, yes Loperamide is an opioid but it does not cross the blood brain barrier, it does NOT get anyone high, especially an opiate addict, it works on the opioid receptors in the gut which stops diarrhea. Also, yes....people who are going through opiate withdrawal might pick some up so they can get through the day without living on the toilet but it does not get anyone high. Again, more ridiculous stuff. This doctor made a great video and I'm grateful for his time.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We have heard of other groups in our area (Pain Medicine practices, not Emergency Departments) having a similar occurrence. It happens when a practice has been regularly prescribing controlled substances in large quantities chronically.

Panadol is paracetamol, which is called acetaminophen in the US (Tylenol I think it's one trade name), so it's a different drug all together than tramadol. Hope that helps whoever asked that question.

Unfortunately I've been on it for years to make life even bearable with severe Fibro, spasticity, and involuntary movements. I just wish the "miracle drugs" like Cymbalta helped me as much as it has for some others. I've failed on so many things. Hopefully there will be better options for chronic pain sufferers someday in our lifetime.

As a nurse I see it prescribed a lot more for post op pain compared to T3, or dilaudid which I've usually seen prescribed.

I don't tolerate Tramadol very well. They put me on it briefly a few years ago (for insomnia), but it gave me hallucinations and delusions, and caused strange behavior.

I love my dr, but since hydrocodone has been reclassified he seems to be very reluctant to prescribe it for me. I only use it occasionally. Last time he prescribed tramadol. It is not effective for me.

I've been on morphine, 30mg, for about 5 yrs. I was also taking oxycodone 10mg. He took me off cold turkey of oxys. How do I get off morphine without cold turkey. I have blown discs, bulging discs and cervical spine. I'm in extreme pain and I know doc is going to take me iff cold turkey. I'd rather stay on it. What do I do?
@wormwoodbush3537
@wormwoodbush3537 7 жыл бұрын
Christine Davis honestly hun, I'd find another doctor. No doctor should take anyone off any opiate medication cold turkey, it needs to be weaned down slowly and then, only if it's causing you problems or isn't working. If it's working and you're having no issues with it (side effects) and you are taking it exactly as prescribed, then there's no reason to take you off it. Perhaps ask your doc for a referral to a pain management doctor/specialist or pain management clinic. If he refuses, finds a new doctor and request a copy of your medical records be sent to the new doc to prove why you're taking the morphine, so they don't think you're an addict seeking pills. If you get into a pain doc or clinic just explain yourself and your situation and tell them that you're afraid your GP is going to take you off the morphine cold turkey and that you don't want to come off it cause it's helping you have some quality of life. Specify the quality of life but, cause ultimately that's what pain management is all about in the end. Good luck.

Hi Doc! I've been on Tylenol 3 for a long while for various medical issues. Tramadol causes headaches so I can't take it. What, in your opinion, is an equal better alternative pain medicine that doesn't contain tylenol?
@auburnmedicalgroup
@auburnmedicalgroup 7 жыл бұрын
Codeine can be used without Tylenol, but it is a more regulated DEA schedule. It makes no sense to me. The Tylenol with codeine is more dangerous than plain codeine.

What's the best pain med, in your opinion, for chronic pain in someone whose filter organs are compromised by chemo and radiation treatments? I have frequently been given Ibuprofen 600, and opioids (oxy, hydro, etc.). I was also given Ambien and AmbienCR for sleep, but had to stop them. I have yet to find a sleep aid that is strong enough, without extreme side effects that my insurance (Trillium/Medicare) will cover.

I have been on fentenal patch over ten years. Would I have to be on this patch rest of life? I developed R.S.D. after a rotor cuff surgery 1994. I have had nerve blocks on many pills. I now take Cymbalta, Neuontin, Klonpin, Pamelor and fentenal patch. Do you know if my body will ever recover once someone developed R.S.D. ?

How about Lyrica and Lupus. My husband has Lupus and being treated with prednisolone (cortisone) and Morphine (both OxyContin 10 mg 3 times a day and OxyContin prolonged -release tablet 10 mg morning and night). His doctor mentioned Lyrica the last time we met him. Do you think that it would work? He's on Fluoxetine right now for depression he has got since she got sick and couldn't work any more 2012.

I am on Tramadol now; been on it a few years and it helps the pain; sometime to good... Cause I get sperts of energy and I overdue or over work myself. Cause once the meds wear off the pain is not bearable. Yes the withdraws are pretty bad. But I haven't went more then two days without, but them two day was hell.
