Pure tungsten is incredibly tough, it would have been a very different story if you’d got some of that. Tungsten carbide does not react well to shock forces. 20 years of cutting metal with it showed me that on many an occasion.

Glen Downer Yes sir this man knows. Many types machinist tooling require tiny replaceable tungsten carbide cutting faces. They are needed to efficiently cut in to hardened metals. TC is so hard that it is extremely brittle. Running and cutting smooth and proper and it'll bore its way through most anything but it crumbles under a shock load. I'm far from an expert but I've watched machinists cut the hardest of steels with a tip and watch them drop a tiny new replacement tip and shatter.

tungsten carbide is a brittle material. It is a cermet “ceramic and metal”. It is very hard but will fail in brittle nature, that is why it fractured. Steel is ductile and will deform. In armor tungsten carbide will defeat a round, but you need to have the proper backing and strike face.

tungsten carbide isn't a cermet (which is a composite material of a ceramic and metalic materials) it is a ceramic chemical compound of tungsten and carbon. tungsten carbide can be the ceramic part in a cermet with some metal.
@benbraceletspurple91086 жыл бұрын
This is alleviated by lead plates in front and behind it. Depleted uranium is both harder than tungsten carbide (76 vs 80) and tougher, not as tough as steel but very close. 1 inch of DU is equal to 15 inches of steel.
@benbraceletspurple91086 жыл бұрын
@@awashburn6944 that is a different scale. The difference is why it is used in tank armor plates. The former 12 inch armor plates were defined by Abrams as inferior in multiple air to ground missile testing and anti tank 20mm and 30mm DU tipped rounds.to 1 inch thick DU armor. On the Rockwell scale DU is hardened from about 60 to about 80 in C scale hardness in almost 100 % pure form. Testing concluded failure above 30mm thus the thickness is usually around 3 inches. This makes the 2007 M1A2 Abrams have the second strongest nonreactive armor in the world, only second to the single-shot resistant of the British tank with still classified layered metallic and ceramic armor. Hardness and toughness are not always inner related, that may be the biggest myth of all regarding materials. After all aluminum and aluminum alloys are both much less tough than steel, and much softer.

Pure tungsten has higher tensile strength and might've yielded a little when shot by 9mm but the material you used is tungsten carbide which means there's added carbon with pure tungsten depending on the concentration of carbon in tungsten the brittleness of the material could be defined. After watching the video it's pretty clear the percentage of carbon is around 4-5%. Which makes the material very brittle. Heat treating helps a lot in the strength of the material.. it also releases all the internal stress of the material

You should send the WC pieces back for recycling. Don't just throw it away. While having a high melting temperature, it will tend to oxidize without a controlled atmosphere at high temperatures. Similarly, while having a very high hardness it has a quite low fracture toughness. This means that once a crack begins, there is very little natural tendency to stop crack propagation. By impacting it with a bullet, it is creating some tensile forces on the material and ceramics are tend to be very weak in tension (though very strong in compression). Additionally, in terms of bullet protection, by breaking apart it allows a dissipation of the impacting energy rather than transferring it to the protected target.

I sold tungsten carbide for 42 years. To be made, it was not a molten material. It is sintered typically with a Cobalt binder. Both materials are ball milled to a talcum powder consistency. They are typically pressed into a shape by a forming die. Before it is sintered it is a fragile as a chalk stick. It is then put in a high temperature/ high pressure vessel and stays in there long enough to go through a sintering process. The particles fuse together with the Cobalt serving as the binder. I knew it was going to shatter before you shot it. It is a cutting material used all over the world. It's secret to bring the choice material is what is referred to had high red hardness. It retains its ability to cut metals even though in many cases the very edge is glowing red. Most all materials soften when red hot.

Okay, let's go through this a bit at a time. Tungsten (Known as Wolfram or Wolframite by the Germans in WW2), is enormously dense in nature, often being used to substitute almost 1 for 1 with gold by counterfeiters. It's density gives it a toughness that makes it highly useful for plowing through airplanes when used as penetrator rounds. Carbide, however, is used for cutting tools which requir a different kind of hardness as it is most often found as a ceramic. It is capable of absorbing higher shock loads than some of the better alloys of steel when mixed with tungsten and machine tools are a natural for this alloy. However, it is so brittle that you might as well as shoot a stack of plates. Get some unalloyed Tungsten (it should be MUCH cheaper, if you wish to abuse it with bullets.

That's why they use it to cut majority of metals in machine shop and Industry. It also makes great punches because it does not wear it only cracks. They also make different types of carbide which are more impact-resistant. They usually come in smaller pieces but you should give that a try like something that you would find on a wood grinder.

really Sherlock, so it's like cast iron vs steel, not the same

Different crystal structure = different material properties. Tungsten carbide is ultra hard but also extreme brittle, melting point is also much lower, etc etc

Why is it called tungsten

Tungsten carbide is really brittle regardless of what manufacturer it was made from...

Tungsten Carbide is very brittle though it's pretty hard and doesn't really melt. It's used for friction drilling and welding, and it's properties make it very good for both of these tasks, as with TiG welding, it conducts electricity pretty well, though the biggest issue with it is that it can pretty easily be contaminated with other materials while welding. I'm not very familiar in the machinists world though, and I can't really speak for the drilling aspect.

To expand on the comments about why it shattered as listed below. The atomic structure when tungsten carbide is created is crystalline. Unlike regular metal which will bend and twist before failing, Tungsten carbide will shatter more like glass or ceramic. It is still an incredibly strong material for its weight and size compared to other materials but it doesn't work so good with a shock like a bullet. It is a very unique material, my wife and I chose to have our wedding rings made out of it. :)

Tungsten Carbide indeed contains carbon elements, hence makes it harder (high hardness retain its sharpness longer) but brittle indeed (not toughness). Drilling rig indeed use tungsten bits on their cutting head, now that's one really super hard & tough tungsten bits.

Carbides have a high carbon content which makes them extremely hard but brittle. It might make a good first layer on armor that would shatter the bullet but would need a softer, tougher material to back it up.

High hardness will not be sufficient elastic, vibration can spread the cracks. In order to absorb the force there should be a combination of different layers of material, for example, you can stick tungsten on a clay mass, when the bullet collides with tungsten, the hardness of tungsten will prevent the bullet and the clay layer the rear will absorb shock. you can try with other absorbent materials, it could be a lead layer ..... ^^

tungsten carbide is alloy of tungsten(swedish word means heavy metal) and carbon in 50.50 ratio and it is used as cutting tool but being so hard makes it very brittle. steel on the other hand has just up to 2.08% of carbon and other elements depending of usage of it. super alloys can contain 8 or more elements in steel alloy so when somebody says to you "high carbon steel",steel already has carbon in it...and that high means 1-2% because as i wrote steel is till it reaches 2.08% of carbon...above that is cast iron

If you need to shoot tungsten carbide and keep it in one piece, it needs to have an elastic material as a backing to absorb the shock transferred. Tungsten carbide is used for ballistic protection but not in the way you've testing. It is meant to crack but it will force the projectile to tumble after it punches through the ceramic. The rest of the armour behind will catch the projectile fragments. Tungsten carbide is thus a sacrificial material. Can tungsten carbide withstand without cracking? Yes. But as mentioned, it needs to have an elastic material (elastopolymer) to absorb the shock and expand.
Interesting video. Nice to see a Colt Python nickel plated no less. Thanks!

I already know Tungsten is almost as hard as diamond but I've been wondering how strong it is for some time. I guess this answers my question. Looks like it's not really strong at all. For anyone who doesn't know, there's a difference between hardness and strength of metal. If it was strong, it would bend instead of shattering.
