Ill be honest. I really enjoyed TW1 at the time (more than TW2) For some reason I really liked the atmosphere it had (even though it was pretty bare at times) The loot was varied and fun to explore for, and the stacking mechanic was genius imo. The memes were pretty hilarious too. Might go replay that someday!

I loved the fighting in TW1 it felt basic but also fun. And the way you could literally go anywhere from the start basically was amazing Plus the fighting was made in a way that if you learned it you could go to high level enemies and kill them/cheese them and that felt great (once I spent like 10 minutes beating some troll with starting sword xD)

As someone who has owned, played and replayed, and enjoyed both...I can't honestly say they weren'tunderrated. They were definitely correctly rated. Again, 'I' enjoy them, but it's a bit mad to claim they're better than they are. They're an acquired taste, with interesting ideas and concepts, but overall pretty poor execution. Shoddy diamonds in a lot of rough. I have a soft spot for them, but they were definitely not underrated at all.

What I never understood about this game, is that it's an open world game that starts on a small island, goes to a bigger island, then a slightly smaller island, and then when you FINALLY get into the big continent on the map, it's just a small swamp and nothing else. I remember being extremely disappointed by the fact that I couldn't explore the huge continent that you could still see on the map. I believe the continent is in use in the multiplayer, but I never got to play it so yeah. Game was pretty enjoyable otherwise though. But every time I think about this game, I think about the disappointment when I found out the big continent is not actually part of the main game.

Both games were crammed with cool or interesting ideas, but the execution and overall quality of both was...pretty awful in respect to the first, and better but still lacking with the second. I still play and enjoy them both to some extent, now and then, but often I'm just left with the feeling both were ultimately a missed opportunity due to a blend of too much ambition and too little development experience.

Most the people from the company went on to make the Witcher games. Which makes sense tbh cause now that I think of it I've always wondered cause it always felt like some of the mechanics from the Witcher were taken from two worlds 2.

Can't say the same thing about the first Two worlds. That one was weird. I like it a bit, but the second one is far superior. And please, play Pirates of the flying fortress. It's full of weird creatures, silly quests and the main quest is also not bad.

I loved TW1 for all its flaws but heard mixed things about 2. Should it be played vanilla or with the mod that removes the linearity and lets you explore the world like in the first game?
@youngimmortal4719
@youngimmortal4719 Жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with your conclusions. The three primary combat types, Melee, Archery and Magic, all work well and are quite viable. One weakness of TW2 over the first is that stats are dumbed down so each corresponds to one of the three styles, which strongly disincentivizes using more than one style. That said, it's worth noting that you can use some melee abilities with a magic staff, and the more powerful magic staffs actually do good elemental damage. Magic is by far my favorite (I actually liked Magic in the first Two Worlds, which I think ends up being far superior to Melee and Archery in that game), with a good variety of spell effects you can use. My favorite spell is what I call the Summon Swarm, using a Spray modifier with a Summon effect, letting me summon three or more creatures at once. In fact, summons can get so powerful that the game gets mostly trivial iirc. The invisibility spell is very powerful, useful even for non-mages. It lets you pickpocket and backstab enemies who otherwise would be very difficult to approach from behind most of the time. You can pickpocket Mutated Hearts from Varns, amusingly. The first area is very sizable, but each act/chapter adds a much smaller region to explore. I am guessing they spent most of their budget/time on the first chapter then had to make the later areas much more quickly. The world map makes it seem like there's another huge area to the North, but when you actually get there, you can only explore a tiny part of it. The ship (or using a waterwalking spell) can let you explore outside the islands a little bit, but there's so little to find and it takes quite a while to traverse. The cities in the first chapter are pretty cool, giving you a lot to explore and steal if you want. The single city in the second chapter is also decent but far smaller. I really liked the lockpicking minigame, but the pickpocketing minigame requires a few points or you're guaranteed to lose sometimes. There's actually a Guitar Hero-esque rhythm game you can play to get money from NPCs, but in my experience it's way, way too difficult for anything other than the Drum. Like you said, the story makes some twists that don't really add up, so the story itself is fairly weak. It doesn't help that they basically throw out the story of the first game, contradicting how you ended things there (and even spells the protag's sister's name differently). Even without that, the ending is seriously weak with Dar Pha just ditching you out of nowhere. (I don't know if it's ever stated explicitly, but I think she's also either not an Orc or not fully an Orc?) It's not outright stated, but I think the 'swallows' are the replacement for the 'taint' in the first game, a term which they ditched for obvious reasons... You didn't mention the multiplayer segment but it's very limited compared to the relative freedom you have in the single player campaign. I played and enjoyed it, but each area is constrained, forcing you to go through a linear path to progress. You can't do any dice or music minigames iirc and cannot steal at all. You can have your own little village if you want, and making the right purchases for buildings makes earning money trivial (looking up the right ones to purchase online is strongly advisable).

I played through this game up until the third area. It was pretty decent, and I absolutely loved the magic system, but once I realized there was no incentive to explore outside of quests I completely lost interest. There's this massive open world and the game basically does nothing with it, it feels like it was trying to compete with Oblivion without really understanding what made Oblivion work.

The first one was way better than the second imo. I hate how you can't explore the mainland in the second game. When I played it I didn't have internet and no one plays the multiplayer on console when I tried with internet so that's a massive part of the map that I never got to look at for even one single second. The first game was literally amazing and I've put thousands of dollars into it. The people who hate it have good reasons but if you love the first game you know what makes it amazing.

See this is bittersweet lol. I played on PS3 and, in retrospect and my opinion, this game was magnificent. Yes, the boss fights were just meh, but the story you play through was similar to a good book that kept me anticipating what was on the next page, granted I was only 13 at the time. The magic system was so much fun to play with even in multiplayer. I remember quite vividly chatting with some people in multiplayer for hours and hours as we thought up some insane spells and we wound up linking magic cards for magic missle, ricochet, and vortex with multishot, speed boost, and explosion magic. What we got was a single cast spell that, while we zoomed through the map, we launched unending missles that were bouncing off of everything and steadily dragging the corpses right behind us to loot at the end.

You can see the development direction change in TT2. While the first two chapters looked up to The Elder Scrolls, the third chapter is more like Dragon Age. And the ending was just a huge rush. The latest DLC was trying to be like The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine but turned out to be a complete disaster. The devs were taking more than they could chew. The Pirate of Flying Fortress is descent enough for the dev team to envision upon.

The upgrading system was okay, but the inability to buy materials directly in-game (and the fact that lower-cost equipment, which you MUST destroy to get materials for upgrading, mostly stops being sold as you level up) makes it functionally impossible to fully upgrade equipment in the base game (I haven't played much DLC so I can't comment on those). This is especially true for certain equipment types which have much rarer materials like chainmail.

What? THQ Nordic acquired Gunfire Games/Remnant: From the Ashes? Huh. Interesting. I was pleased with Perfect World being the publisher. Although I won't play it (yet, still skipped the spoilers), I enjoy hearing your thoughts on Two Worlds II. Remembering I had the first one on Xbox 360 makes me remember the other Xbox 360 RPGs that I had and would want to revisit. Kingdom Under Fire, Magna Carta 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Spectral Force 3, and Enchanted Arms come to my mind. I swear the characters in Star Ocean: The Last Hope looked better in my memories on Xbox 360 than it does remastered on PS4. I don't have much to say about Two Worlds II. I'm glad they acknowledge the existence of Asians. Unlike Elder Scrolls where they are apparently extinct. I'm not letting that go. I'll only get angrier in time.

Also the game on steam I'm pretty sure use to be positive, but then they released a "cash grab" DLC a few years back, from what I gathered last time I looked on the games page.

Do you know the webseries Sordahon's Journey ? It strongly reflects the vibes of the old KZbin.

I really hated the first game and couldn’t dream about playing a sequel… Fun to hear a bit nuanced critique!

I remember loving Two Worlds and hoping for a sequel when I finished it. Then I never played the sequel.

It just warms my heart when i see someone posting about two worlds 2 and gothic 3 or Witcher 1 which only got ruined and comercialized later Since they are not so popular I know people who play them and love them feel that magic in them Play Age of Decadence if you didn't, you will love it there are no words for that game, its made out of pure love

I feel like in many aspects this game was an improvement from the first one, but also regressed in other aspects. I do like that in this series the Orcs aren't necessarily the villains as they often are in a lot of fantasy stories in various western RPGs who kind of just borrow that aspect from traditional fantasy stories written by some of the greats like Tolkien for example. I also like that about The Elder Scrolls series because throughout various games in that series certain groups are villains but not necessarily one race or another as a whole. Granted I vastly prefer The Elder Scrolls over Two Worlds one or two, but I suppose that goes without saying, doesn't it? lol XD

The two worlds games have the best armor and weapon visual and itemizations.

i love the original Two Worlds. The voice acting is hilarious, and the gameplay is good. It's an extremely challenging game, particularly at the start, and I feel a lot of the hate it got was due to the terrible VA and difficulty, which made most people assume it was awful without playing it for too long. It still has one of the best magic systems of any rpg and the equipment system is also very good. I never played Two Worlds 2 because I heard it had slightly better mechanics but less of the hilariously bad VA, which to me sounded like a generic average rpg. However, based on this review I think I will have to check it out because it looks rather good.

Oh man. This is some nostalgia for me. xD But I always prefered the first Two Worlds. Not saying it's better really but just enjoy it more and have replayed it even quite recently. I enjoy breaking that game. x) Also gotta say that I can't help but really dislike how Gandohar is in this game. He was much cooler and had a much cooler voice in the first game.

As somebody who grew up poor and never was able to buy the latest final fantasy or RPG, Two Worlds II was one of those budget RPGs that you bought because it was cheap. And when you played it you realized WHY it was so cheap. It wasnt a masterpiece but it was entertaining and a decent way to pass the time.

After completing the game some years ago, I have the feeling that it could've been a great game if the devs had more people and resources. Or, maybe, a couple of really talented guys. As it stands, the game is still okay. Not stellar, but not terrible, either.
