i think that the term fast fashion doesnt apply to uniqlo. Its a low cost basics brand. The sustainability problems that can apply to fast fashion brands apply to uniqlo because of the low cost and large quantity of production. but the model of uniqlo is fundamentally different from shein, zara and h&m which you mentioned as the first point in the video. Uniqlo sticking to core pieces that do not change at a fast rate like trendy pieces is the disctinction between them and fast fashion. At the very least, uniqlo doesnt encourage the wasteful consumption of a trendy disposable wardrobe.

All fair points. I think it ultimately comes down to how much emphasis you place on trends as a qualifier for being “fast fashion”. Uniqlo is less disposable, but I’ve still noticed attitudes towards Uniqlo (in America specifically) are to discard clothes if they have any imperfections (stains, holes, don’t like them anymore etc.) because it’s easier to replace than repair.

@@Indigololz I guess it comes down to one’s individual purchasing habits and how they participate with fashion cycles. Great video, you have quite a sensible balanced view on this issue.

Yes, I believe fast fashion is a two way street. It is usually discussed based on the business practices of specific companies, but is rarely discussed by the type of purchasing and disposal habits that fuel this business model. As I said in the video, buying less is the most sustainable solution, regardless of price point.

@@Indigololz most of the clothes from uniqlo that has holes and stains or damage are being sold for a lower price without exchange or refund policy once they agreed that they are buying a damage clothes. But 2 years ago they change there rules instead of selling it for a lower price they are donating it to different organization that the company is supporting locally or internationaly.

That’s good to know! A lot of secondhand fast fashion get shipped to developing nations. If stores like Uniqlo can consistently send new, but defected / blemished clothes to these nations instead of discarding, that’s a good step in my eyes!

Great topic of discussion! I've also been thinking about this, especially whenever I see youtubers/influencers who shit on H&M/Zara etc, but then go on to preach about how great and affordable Uniqlo is. I get buying some bits of fast fashion every now and then (have done so myself), but at least be aware of what you're buying and promoting. To me, all these brands are still within the fast fashion bubble.

To be self-critical, my most popular KZbin video is a Uniqlo U review. It never felt very authentic because I’m not a big Uniqlo guy, just own a few pieces from collabs. I can see how Influencers get sucked into promoting Uniqlo or other fast fashion brands - they drive lots of Likes, Views, and money into the influencers pocket.

Except Uniqlo, where can you find a place where you can find the exact piece of clothing now and 3 years from now? I need consistency. I hate fashion. That why I buy Uniqlo. There is no ethical business in a capitalist system anyway.

Uniqlo is the opposite of fast fashion. Their clothes stay the same every year, occasionally introducing a few new updated styles that will remain in the catalog for years. Fast fashion sell clothing for a season and you won't see them again. Also, uniqlo is Japanese brand, which values quality over quantity. Uniqlo clothes are often of above average quality and their prices are affordable but not cheap

I think they are fast fashion in terms of mass production. But in terms of participating on what's hot in the moment or replicating new runway pieces and hit the store right away in a fraction of price, they are definitely not there. Me personally I love buying Uniqlo pieces that they collaborated with a designer. Specially J+ and Uniqlo U. People are complaining about the quality that is not the same as their main brands but I don't care. I wear my Uniqlo U for about 4 years now and still a staple in my closet until I get old!

I agree, the quality is pretty good for the price. Not to mention J+ or Uniqlo U is often 1/10th the price of the designers mainline offering. I’m a fan of Uniqlo, just want to see them do better 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well said! If anything, they directly work with actual designers, experimenting with different styles and silhouettes. At the same time, these styles are so timeless. It's wonderful.

I've yet to find t-shirts as good as Uniqlo's airism line. Particularly the overaized variant, which is my daily wear. Looks and fits me well and is perfect for Texas heat.

I don't see why Uniqlo should pay the garment workers. They have hired a supplier to create products and payed the price for it - if the supplier pays their workers is not their responsibility.
@Indigololz
@Indigololz Жыл бұрын
While they don’t have direct oversight of garment worker wages, Uniqlo is one of the largest clothing retailers in the world. This creates significant leverage for them in their relationships with factory and supply chain partners who are often significantly smaller and wholly dependent on Uniqlo to stay in business. If Uniqlo were to implement higher standards for how garment workers are compensated and the conditions they work in, most factories would comply to retain Uniqlos business.

Many users have no other choice but to buy cheaply made garments, that's just the world we live in. A t-shirt shouldn't cost 10$, someone involved in making that shirt doesn't get paid enough. Governments should regulate how this kind of business is done, insert some sort of taxes or penalties if a company can't reach a set of sustainability/ethical production goals. Voting with wallets is only something the well off can do. It is a privilege to be able to choose from the options given. Most people have no other choice but to buy from FF brands as that is all they can afford. No one "has" to buy tons of cheap clothes but if the social environment pushes for that behaviour that is what people will do. To me it is appalling to keep buying from brands that have a connection to things like the Xinjiang cotton, do we really put such a low value on human rights? I feel like educating the public about ehtical consumption is meaningless if that is something only the well-off can do.

Thanks for watching! I agree the government could be more involved in helping regulate and protect this industry. I agree as well that advice regarding buying Fast Fashion needs to be contextualized to each person. I’d have to look into it further, but I’d be curious to see where the majority of sales comes from for Uniqlo, Zara, H&M etc. Usually their stores are located in larger cities in affluent shopping areas. How many lower income shoppers are really buying from them? I don’t have the answer, but interesting question to think about.
@Localful2

@@Indigololz At least in Europe fast fashion retailers can be found almost anywhere where there is a shopping centre/district, doesn't necessarily have to be an affluent area. Online retail has also contributed to FF brands being more widely available, think of Shein for example. If I think of an average consumer, they don't usually care where the things they buy are made or whether the materials are good, they just buy whatever meets their criteria for the product at the moment. If I look at shopping districts where I live in, there generally speaking are no sustainable/ethical brick&mortar stores in those locations. You'd have to do research and spend time to find those brands that offer those better made garments, and they usually only have an online presence. I'm hoping we see more of a push from brands to be better, a lot better than for example H&M's conscious initiative. Honestly, I think those kind of things come off as just greenwashing since their whole business model is based on feeding overconsumption. Glad you made a video on this subject, good to keep the conversation going. Thanks!

That’s good to know about how common Fast Fashion retail shops are in Europe. I agree there’s extra effort to find more ethical / sustainable options, but an assumption behind making this video is if you’re watching then you’re already looking. It won’t reach everyone, but hopefully those who care can see it.
