While Utah has been a strong football program under head coach Kyle Whittingham, there are reasons to believe they may not consistently be as dominant as Kansas State or Oklahoma State in the Big 12. Utah's success has largely been tied to the Pac-12, where they've consistently competed at the top. However, transitioning into the Big 12 could present new challenges, especially against teams like Kansas State and Oklahoma State, which have established themselves as top-tier programs in the conference.
Kansas State has a history of overachieving, particularly under legendary coach Bill Snyder, and now with Chris Klieman, the Wildcats continue to exceed expectations. Known for their toughness and disciplined style of play, K-State regularly contends for conference titles, winning the Big 12 Championship in 2022. Oklahoma State, under the leadership of Mike Gundy, has also built a consistent program. The Cowboys have been known for their high-powered offenses, often fielding some of the best quarterback and receiver combinations in the country. They also consistently finish near the top of the conference standings.
Utah may face a steeper climb to establish the same level of sustained success in a new conference. While the Utes have the pedigree and talent, adjusting to the unique styles of play and competitiveness in the Big 12 could prove challenging. Meanwhile, programs like Kansas State and Oklahoma State have already adapted and thrive in the conference’s competitive atmosphere.
