Is Vagrant Story Worth The Hype?

Passionate fans have massively hyped up this classic RPG. Are they right?
Developed and published by Square for the Sony PlayStation and released in 2000, this early 3D JRPG has seen few re-releases and no sequels or spin-offs, despite taking place in Ivalice, the world of Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Vagrant Story is a true gem, and a work of art. Most people, myself included, would agree with you on the cumbersome UI though. A modern remaster could easily fix this, however. Just wish Square would get off their ass and do it! :) Oh, and in regards to the localization, it was actually a request made by Matsuno himself. Alexander O. Smith has said in interviews that he worked closely with Matsuno, and he was told to make it "biblical". So this is not one of those cases where the localization team just kind of goes their own way with it. And it totally fits the game and gives it an atmosphere that works with the story and themes.

Weapon type does matter in this game. The material type affects how much damage you can do to certain enemy types. Hagane, Silver and Damascus are the superior materials for living, undead and evil enemy types respectively. The trick is to have a decent weapon of those types by the end or the final bosses will seriously wreck you.

What always impressed me about this game is its cutscenes. It has PS1 models but the animation and cinematography looks well beyond the standard for the platform. Comes off very much as a transitional game between console generations.

They need to put yasumi matsuno on a head-development team within S.E.....my life goes by checking the guy up every so months and hoping they working on a stellar new grand game filled with his uncanny storytelling....one day......one day

Good review! I also can't get into it for the same reason as you - the gameplay is too slow. I do actually love the writing and the story, though - so I just watched all of the cutscenes on KZbin, haha.
