Is video production a fun career?

While it might look like a lot of fun from the outside, sometimes looks can be deceiving. Video production is a lot more than fun but that isn't necessarily a good thing...

Exactly. At the end of the day it's a job. Even porn stars get sick of their job.

Name any job that is always "fun"? I am the author of my experience. What decides if I'm having a fun or not? My attitude. I've been an engineer/programmer for 40 years and have loved it. Was some of it hard work with long hours, pulling all-nighters? Yes ... but I had fun because I loved the work and some of the people. I've worked on several amateur films and a few professional ones. Was it hard sometimes? Yes. Did I have the time of my life? Absolutely! On *_The Magnificent Dead_* I worked from 4 PM until dawn as the sound mixer for three weeks on Willy Nelsons ranch/western set, Luck Texas. It was cold. Most of the crew quit after the first long day. (I guess it wasn't fun for them!) The director was not a nice guy. It was hard, cold work with really bad food, and not much of it. Oh and we where all working for free. Did I love it? Yes. Was it fun? Yes, for me at least. All the actors stayed the course too. Nothing worth doing is easy, but anything is fun if you make it fun. i would jump at the chance to work on another film like that ... and it would be fun. Check my IMDB credits. There's only a few and most things I've worked on didn't get any credit.

Who's said this would be easy 😉 If this was easy everybody can make it and it wouldn't be unique

Very true. I always tell ppl that one of the best skills you can have as a videographer is problem solving. Very seldom do things work out the way you planned.

Very honest. Lets not forget the egos of people on set. Everyone wants to be the man, the director, the DP. Its really annoying when crew doesn't stick to their roles.

My dude. YES! I have my degree in video production ( not that it says much), but I have worked on short films, commercials, wedding videography, sports and was a production assistant on a feature film for like a day. I completely agree with you. It's a lot of hard work and problem solving. I honestly enjoy that type of work environment. unfortunately, I was never able to find a job in film. 😅 I think it takes a person to really like it in order to do it and have fun with it, but I guess that can go for any job really. 😃 Great video! I don't see very many videos on video production and what its really like.

Totally agree with this - the number of people who have been so keen to work with me on projects only to find that it is the least glamorous work they could imagine. Its especially noticeable the lack of patience newbies have. You see how they get frustrated with a 5 min video shoot taking hours of shooting, waiting, repeating the same shoot and waiting again.

Haha yes! Absolutely! People think it's going to be fun and easy, then they find out they have to carry 100lbs of gear up a mountain...and it's 105 degrees out.

All of that DOES sound fun to me what do you mean ... you mean to tell me we get to do millions of shoots until you or someone else is satisfied with it ? That’s exactly what i love and have patience for ... i rather get home late knowing i did a perfect shoot and the way i want it and its now going to stay that way forever once its uploaded .. i love all of that.. is that the worse it gets? Easy and the lifting part in mornings? Who cares im going to need the littlebwork out sessions since ima be sitting on my ass editing videos as it is so why wouldni complain about the lifting also! ? Really thats it ? No way

People watching this video: There are other avenues to take your video production education - not just "Hollywood." What about real estate videography? or KZbin Video production? My dad always said "Do what you love and the money will follow." A whole bunch of what this guy is saying doesn't apply to every Video production genre.

Haha don't lose faith. This is mostly a video for people who think shooting video (or photos) will be fun and easy, I can assure you, it's definitely not. Like I said in the video, there is joy in it and I love what I do! It's just a lot of the time it isn't a "glamorous" as a lot of people think it is. If you love it and enjoy it even when it isn't "fun" then you've found the right career.

That's a part of it but what a lot of people don't realize is that production is work, it's not easy or "fun". Long hours, late nights, early mornings, in the blistering sun, in the freezing cold, lifting heavy equipment, setting up, tearing down, setting up, tearing down, over and over again. I love it immensely, it's just not for everyone.

I agree, its like many jobs and other things you have to do in life, not always fun but often worth it in the end. Not long ago I was shooting parts of the intro to a video project and one of the problems I had, was that there were quite a few places I had to shoot in, that were public places with people around and often when I tried to get my shots, people would come up and ask me about my camera and gear. Not that I am against people doing that, but not as much as I was getting though, especially when trying to record. Luckily the shots I needed were not shots that took a long time to record and I was able to get most of the the shots done, apart from one day when I got disturbed by some people asking about my camera, while trying to shoot, then it started raining. I know the end result will be worth it, so that is why I never gave up and kept trying until I got the shots. The series I am working on is to do with nature and the environment, so I quite like getting out to places, especially more remote wilder places and seeing things I don't always get to see, but one part was about wildlife on some islands and there was a group of us who went. Part of the episode had to be shot on the boat as we went to the islands. That was mostly fine, except it was at 9am and we were in a small converted fishing boat and there was a fog and about 3 miles out to sea, there was 3ft or higher waves and one wave came over me, soaked the camera, audio recorder and microphone. Luckily the rest of the gear was in waterproof bags and I was wearing waterproof clothing and when we got the island, I was able to try off the gear and it worked fine and we got some great shots, and the everything still works fine now, but it was not not exactly fun for that time of the morning.

Now this is true, at the end of the day this is a job and not just hanging out with mates or celeb's. Newbie's, forget the idea that it seems SO COOL, the reality is very different and these days often undervalued financially because competition is so fierce. Democratisation of video production has been great for clients, not so much for those producing content.

+Gavin Sherlock the "OMG so cool" attitude is what I wanted to confront in this video. Too many people think it's easy to do and then underestimate the intensity of the career.

Like others have said, great post, dude. I actually just worked a fun gig. Maybe I'm spoiled because I get to just jerk around half my day shooting b-roll for entertainment / sports companies, I don't know. I have a couple degrees. I have an animation and art degree, and another in human geography with a minor in art history. I'm lucky that I'm well rounded. That being said, every now and then I get the opportunity to shoot for a subject I'm closer too, usually relating to cities or the environment. This weekend I shot for a dinner called from "Prairie to Plate," and it was a blast. It was impossible to mess up, because everything looked like "Pinterest." I get to shoot a lot of things I'm interested in overall, and I'm spoiled because I don't generally have to edit it, as well as granted the power of shooting what I deem important. It's weird, because I have this weird amount of backing from my company-- their trust in me-- that makes me feel like I can do no wrong (even though I do a lot of stupid things, like standing in front of timers and slow-mo broadcast cameras). I'm wildly empowered, and when I get to do things out of the ordinary a couple times a month, I take full-advantage of it all, generally over-shooting.This rambled. Sorry ya'll.
