I rate Van Dijk very highly but he's in the era that not many strikers are dangerous compare to the era Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Cavalho, Maldini, Canavaro, Puyol, Nesta and Lucio faced against the likes of Henry, Rooney, Drogba, Torres, Villa, Zlatan, Adriano, Ronaldo, Raul, Shevchenko, Del Piero, Totti, Inzaghi, Klose, Toni, Shearer, Eto'o and Trezeguet. Van Dijk is the best defenser in the Premier League now but he's levels below Vidic, Terry and Calvalho I'm afraid in terms of the greatest defenders ever in the Premier League.

Yeah but honestly he didn't face the calibre of strikers that the likes of Rio, Vidic and Terry faced. The only strikers he really had to face in his prime where Kane, Aguero and his bogey striker was Giroud. Rio, Vidic and Terry faced so many elite and top strikers like Van Persie, Rooney, Adebayor, Anelka, Drogba, Torres, even the likes of Defoe, Bent and Crouch gave top CBs problems.

As a Liverpool fan, I agree with Rants regarding VVD. The aesthetics is what boosts VVD's ratings. But, his prime was ridiculous. A nutmeg is a different feeling when playing ball. Especially if you score a goal or play a decisive pass after

VVD is a top CB but he played in a era full of dead strikers compared to the likes of Terry, Rio, Vidic where there were hella of killers upfront. Let's face it prime VVD before the injury the biggest threats he played against that consistently gave him problems were more prime Aguero, Kane, Giroud and Martial while our the defenders in the 00s and early 2010s faced the likes of Henry, Van Persie, Drogba, Torres, Defoe, Rooney, Berbatov, Adebayor, Anelka and even the likes of Darren Bent and Peter Crouch caused top CBs problems. Now it's more the wide players giving CB problems because the way mans wanna play CBs are dragged across the wingers because fullbacks are booming foward

When VVD comes up against top CF and ST, he's always exposed. Perfect example is Benzema and Giroud. He's just a very good calm ball player but defending is like a 8/10

VVD is not overated. When we first bought him I thought it was a shocking piece of business for the price we paid, and overall, he's been exceptional. Back bone of a team that won us our first major honour for 15 years. He's a top player. That being said no way is he a goat center back because like you say, didn't win enough and his peak was only 4 years. I would even put Stam above him and who played less premier league games. But don't talk like VVD is not a top player because he is.

He is…but he’s overrated. He’s been in multiple conversations of best defender of all time, best pl players of all time and yet he’s still in his playing career? Just take someone like Messi…how long did he have to play what did he have to do and achieve before ppl started comparing him to Maradonna Pele etc? VVD is good…but due to the way he’s being compared to greats who did it for YEARS! It’s gotta be said, he’s overrated

@GrizZLyGuy I hear you bro but just because some people wanna talk out of pocket doesn't mean people should jump the other way, it's a little bit 'two halves of the same shitty coin' for me. There was a few years were VVD would walk into any team in world football and, apart from Ramos (who is in the GOAT conversation), I cant think of any defender of his era that is a level above him. I think he's an honorable mention, or one of the best of the rest type situation. Either way, VVD should get nothing but respect from football fans. Let the idiots on the hype train ride that shit alone.

@@user-rg2ee2xi1k from what you’ve said I think your problem then is with the word “overrated” making it sound like he’s actually not good. But that’s not true. When Liverpool one the league I heard pundits casually putting him in best ever PL team 11’s. That is literally overrating. He is good. Very good. But he has his attributes (which rants mentioned) and hasn’t been in the position other top defenders who have done it for longer have been. I mean…can we even name a world class striker VVD has pocketed? Or where he absolutely bosses them all game? I know we don’t have that much to choose from but for me that says a lot.

VAn dijk is really good but he's not even the best of his generation. Thiago SIlva, Chiellini, Bonucci, Ramos and probably even Hummels for a period of time were better than him for a longer period of time. His prime is waay too short and he's not the insane defender people think he is. Also if you go further back he cant compare to the best Like Maldini Puyol Baresi Nesta Ecc. The other guys i mentioned? They are at least in the conversation with the GOATS of the past in my opinion. He's probalby in the conversation for the GOAT PL defenders but he's at the bottom of the list
