Several of the biggest market experts have been voicing their opinions on exactly how awful they think the next downturn would be, and how far equities may have to go, as recession draws closer and inflation continues well above the Fed's 2% objective. I'm trying to build a portfolio of at least $850k by the time I'm 60, therefore I need suggestions on what investments to make.

Most people either do not understand the power of compound interest, or are just impatient. For the average Joe, however, I think it is just best to invest in the S&P 500, and just wait, which is reliable, albeit extremely long-- lots of years. Or just use a professional analyst and speed up wealth creation. Most people underestimate the power of the latter.

On my end I've been in touch with a financial analyst ever since I started my business. Knowing today's culture The challenge is knowing when to purchase or sell when investing in trending stocks, which is pretty simple. On my portfolio, which has grown over $900k in a little over a year, my adviser chooses entry and exit orders.

I love Buffet. He was the person who opened my eyes to investing. But I think we cannot read much into any of his moves lately. 1) He is a democrat, I think, and he probably thought Harris is going to win, so he was anticipating a higher tax rate and taxes on unrealized gains. So he potentially sold to not be paying that huge tax bill. 2) He has an inheritance which I think he wants to donate a lot of it to charity. So, he might be selling due to that. 3) He wants to create a pile of cash such that his successors will have the freedom to buy whatever they want and not feel pressured to keep his investments after he hands over the company. 4) And maybe a lot of more reasons that he knows and we don't. Just buy at reasonable prices and in 10 years, you will be fine. I wish I had money when I got out of school to buy in the 2020 crash. 5 years since the crash and stocks up 100+%. Bears always sound smarter but bulls always end up with the money!!

The discusison about timing the market or not is stupid. Every investor, except DCA, is timing. More or less agressible but timing at the end. When you are waiting for the stock you like to achive your entry point, you are timing. When you sell because is overvalued, you are timing. So lets move on and accept we all do it and it is fine, is because we like to do it and make as fell we can predict the future. Dont be afraide is part of the humane nature

@@tomw485 can you explaine me what "timing the market" means, please?
@tomw485
@tomw485 20 күн бұрын
@ Timing the market is timing your buy and sell points with the overall market (maybe the S&P 500, Dow or whatever broad market indexes your investing into). Some people think they can game it by waiting for a crash to get an attractive entry point or selling everything after a large run up then wait for a crash to get back in. For broad market investing this is a fools errand because it’s impossible to predict and studies have shown that DCA vastly out performs people that try to time valleys and peaks. Value investing is only buying stocks when their financial parameters and expected future growth meet certain metrics that according to your thesis is below fair market value and will likely achieve returns surpassing the greater market. Sure you might have specific stocks that you have your eye on that are valued above what you deem fair market. But you’re really just hunting for good companies at bargain prices. If a particular company that interests you never achieves a stock price that’s attractive you might never buy that stock. You’re not timing anything really you’re measuring company and stock values and making moves accordingly. It’s a completely different mindset. Some people think they can apply similar strategies and analysis to the broad market and exploit inefficiencies effectively “timing the market”… this almost never works out for them and they underperform because the market and an individual stock are different things. If you don’t see a difference I’m not sure what else to say.

The largest single-day percentage declines for the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both occurred on Oct. 19, 1987 with the S&P 500 falling by 20.5 percent and the Dow falling by 22.6 percent. Two of the four largest percentage declines for the Dow occurred on consecutive days - Oct. 28 and 29 in 1929. The market fell roughly 25 percent over those two days. The Dow reached an all-time high in September 1929 before the crash and did not return to its pre-crash high until 25 years later in November 1954. From its peak in September 1929, the Dow fell 89 percent, bottoming in the summer of 1932 at 41.22, the lowest closing level of the 20th century. The six largest single-day point declines for the Dow all occurred in the first six months of 2020 as investors grappled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The largest single-day point decline for the Dow occurred on March 16, 2020 when the index fell 2,997 points, or 12.9 percent. The largest single-day point decline for the S&P 500 also occurred on March 16, 2020, falling 324.9 points, or about 12 percent.

when the market crashes again there will be a lot of investors who say they didn't see it coming. It is always this way going back past the 80's. Buying with a good margin of safety is the best way to minimize that kind of pain - sure, you will miss out of gains by not buying at the bottom and selling at the top.

well, I'm not Warren Buffet but some things I know. First, we're at ath and the average valuation of the s&p is almost as high as it was before the 2008 and 1990 crashes. Second, these ridiculous valuations are mostly due to the AI boom, which is the only reason that might justify them. Third, ALL companies investing big in AI atm are doing so with the aim of extracting more money from their current users (google implementing better algos for KZbin ads, AWS implementing bigger cloud storage, Tesla better self-driving software for its cars and so on...). 4th, the "users" are not getting their wages increased. So.... how long before the bubble explodes ? Throw in that Trump will most likely push for a stronger deregulation for banks, heavier FED cuts and lower cost of money.... If this is not the perfect enviroment for a big crash I don't know what is.

The black swan catalyst is inherently random/unpredictable. They are only destructive when the markets/macro-economics are very out of balance like they are now. Thus will have never thought "it" could happen (like most past crashes), but we know what to pay attention to in order to get a sense of when to be ready to exploit the opportunity. This is different than timing the market. This is about understanding psychology and financial/business cycles. I think having some "ready to go" cash is good. Having too much cash creates opportunity cost losses and might be indicative of trying to time the market. And as for me, I'm excited about the next crash! Salesman. I like Paul though. Context… I was born in 1983 in Canada. I’ll always believe in the freight train power of the U.S. economy. Gold plated locomotive since Bretton Woods. Diamond in the rough before WW2. The most enthusiastic hard working people put USA on the map. Powerful. Times change. Buffet and Munger were not so bullish on the backbone of the US 6 months ago. Maybe that was fake news I watched? Who the f knows. Gauge the people on Main Street, not Wall Street. How are you feeling today? Ready to get up and go pay that mortgage off?

You guys have been predicting a crash for 4 years and totally missing the bull market. You want to teach a process but so far the process has been pretty bad. Missing out on huge gains with terrible picks like: Walgreens, Intel, Southwest Airlines, Smith Wesson, Alibaba, HP. And a lot of videos have been deleted. Glad I moved on and found my own process.

Buffet never tries to time the market (and no one should) he just doesn't see anything as investment worthy given how expensive the market is. Buffet never has a problem holding cash if it makes sense. Just be careful when using the words "time the market" that is not what is happening.

Sounds like Buffet is selling Apple in a massive way and Paul made that perfectly clear.

Now is either the best or worst time to buy Google. They've made a HUGE operating decision with having AI writing a large amount of their new code and humans review it. That'll either mean they have huge operating gain (more revenue and less overhead) or they'll bring on so much tech debt burden (not money debt... They'll have to hire an extremely high amount of senior level devs to fix their tech debt though). As a developer, it truly seems like a make or break type of decision....

The thing about crashes if your a index investor into spy or voo Is that the crash is the all time high of yesterday. Always zoom out. Buddy of mine was being given "financial advice" to not buy spy at 540 when that was near ATH. "Don't do it, all time high wait for crash." He's happy he didn't listen. You can't time flash crashes like the August 5th "growth scare" as Tom Lee put it. Now SPY is nearing $600

Buffett certainly isn't perfect. He sold MCD in the 90's before it ran up over 1,400%, he sold COST just before it exploded, he bought TSMC and sold it just before it more than doubled, he sold airline stocks at the very bottom during Covid (after telling everyone multiple times never to invest in airline stocks), he bought OXY when oil was at record highs and paid a fortune for General Re Insurance in the 90's, bragging how he never even visited the head office and then spent nearly a decade trying to fix that mess. I've noticed also that each time he's increased his cash holdings, stocks have gone onto record highs. Sure he's done exceptionally well (no one is going to argue with that) but he's not perfect and he's definitely not a market timer

I think Buffet is on the wrong side this time around… crash or not he’s been on the sideline with this growth in the current market. How much loss would that calculate currently. Again, Buffet is 1 of 1, it’s hard for him to find a return that can justify with his current cash flow. You can’t deploy that much cash into the market for a return that will make sense. He’s 95 years and I’m sure he’s not making any decisions at this point, whoever is behind the scene is messing up.
