Yishun. We've heard things about Yishun such as its the 'hood where weird things happen and gangs are common...so we decided to make a family day out of visiting.
We met up with our good friend Dalini who stays in Yishun and knows the area well. She took us to buy some of her local childhood snacks from growing up in Singapore. We hopped on bus and made the short journey to the beautiful Seletar Reservoir where we actually encountered out first gang.
We tried the snacks and walked out along the pier to enjoy the views and the slowly setting sun before heading back on another bus to grab some dinner at Yishun Park Hawker Centre. we asked Dalini about some of the headlines we had read and the stories we had hear to get a locals point of view.
Come along and explore Yishun with us and find out what it's like!

I feel like older estates like Yishun, Bedok, Tampines etc still retain their character. The newer estates like Punggol and Sengkang seem kinda utilitarian and dull.

We spend a lot of time in Punggol as Jonty’s grandma lives there and we love it. The walk along the water, the new library is amazing too. It does seem newer with more shopping malls about the place. His grandma has a lovely little coffee shop at the bottom of her block and can pass all the uncles having their morning kopi and catch up. We like that area a lot. As for Sengkang I only know the hospital!

Yishun unsafe? It’s urban myth. My daughter and her fiancé have lived there for years, and she walks from the train station for some distance every night to her block of flats, and there’s never been an issue. The only complaint I have about Yishun is that it’s less accessible from Central Singapore. Social media has a way of playing up Yishun’s bad rep, but it’s just hype. I feel bad for Yishun residents… it’s a really beautiful, safe neighbourhood, like the rest of Singapore!

@kenzone haha I've been thinking recently maybe people from Yishun are creating all these hypes so that not many people will move n live in Yishun as those who have been living in Yishun for ages knows its getting congested and getting densed. It can take up to 10 mins for me to drive from the lower part of Yishun(Khatib) to the upper part of Yishun. And then another 10 mins back to lentor avenue which is to the expressway. Yishun residents will realise they have been building lots of new flats in recent years too. But not many knows Yishun area lots of fantastic eateries. Many 24hrs food places too.

Yishun is great. There is a strong community vibe as many of the residents have lived here for decades and know their neighbours well.... some are even multi-generational neighbours as they come from the same kampongs when the Sg Gov relocated people to HDB estates..... we enjoy walking around the open public spaces/parks in the early mornings or evenings and watching the various dance and exercise groups go through their paces. Fav spots/activities in Yishun .... 1) Just Ants, 2) ORTO (former Bottle Tree Park) 3) Tzu Chi Humanistic Centre(for breakfast at Slow Bakes overlooking the mini-lake) 4) Jogging from Lower Seletar towards Upper Seletar/Springleaf via the park connector/canal route, 5) Chong Pang City (bustling market/hawker centre/shops), 6) Sembawang Hot Springs.

Great video !! The most awful parts about Yishun : walking around in humid weather and the Uncles on personal utility bikes who dream of being Formula 1 drivers *HAHAHAH !!* At Yishun, get off at Khatib MRT Station for the Home Team Club. There's the amazing Action Motion Arena, a sort of playground for adults : climb-bounce-slide all of 4 storeys tall. Older estates have little shops selling stuff you get in the 70s, cheap Mani/Pedis, local home baked kuehs, freshly made waffles with delicious kaya, old style soya bean drinks, Yew Char Kway stalls, really good authentic hawker food. Slowly these are disappearing, so try them quick. AND, the Hubs said "WOWW" - he is definitely going to get that Lamb Shank Briyani soon !!!! Aida

Hi it's been a long while since I left a comment. But since you guys showcased Yishun where I lived then I have to share some recommendations. I missed your cycling videos. Maybe you can cycle from Lower Seletar Reservoir to Upper Seletar Reservoir which has the best reservoir sunset in Spore. Then you can also continue cycling to Upper Pierce Reservoir and Lower Pierce Reservoir. Maybe if there is time you can end your evening at Orto before its taken away soon for redevelopment. It's sad as Orto is one of a kind dining experience in Spore. The tortoise museum shifted to Orto from Chinese Garden. They have some kampong activities where you might be interested in. I don't know if they still have a pond over there for kids to catch guppies which we used to do in the olden days. Regarding the Lower HBD which Millie mentioned I think those are mansionette flats. Maybe Jonty you can bring Millie to Whampoa or Queenstown which are the inky 2 places in Spore where they have HDB terrace houses. I'm sure Millie will be surprised to see a HDB flat which looks exactly like a landed property house.

Actually I wanted to recommend you mountain biking in Spore but it's quite dangerous. Definitely not for your kids. I think Jonty and Millie will love it as you guys love nature. It's really serene and peaceful when you are cycling on the mtb tracks. Away from the roads and you can just hear the crikets(I think so) and birds. There's quite a few mtb tracks in Spore. Im also looking forward to you guys doing the new bird park in Mandai as I'm sure you guys will definitely go. I wanna see is it as good as the old Jurong Bird Park or better or worse😭 I won't be going soon as I know it's gonna be really crowded.

And you might see Johor, Malaysia on a good day. 7:33 You should have gone up to the 2nd floor and try the halal lanzhou beef la mian. 3:38 That’s not a train station. That’s the old bus interchange before they moved next to Northpoint. Also behind Northpoint/Bus interchange, there’s a place called Kedai Kopi and a branch of Hjh Maimunah is in there if you’re looking for tasty Nasi Padang 5:32 Jonty would have his mind blown if he knew that there’s a Junction 10 at Bukit Panjang 😂 10:51 Because it’s near Seletar Airport. Flight path. 12:23 Also if you have walked to the other end, there’s a dam and a place where people fishing and next to it is Seletar Airport. Yishun like Bukit Merah/ Red Hill areas were populated by people of lower income usually living in rented HDB flats. Usually, the families come from a single parent families with the main bread winner on low income and has little or no time to exercise parental control. In the 70s, 80s, 90s, Police officers on patrol in cruise vehicles received 50% to 80% more cases in 8 hrs shifts spiking during the hours 7-11pm. Code Areas are Romeo 21/22 at Yishun/Sembawang/Thomson. Romeo 3/4 covers Bt Merah/Redhill/Queenstown areas. Cases include drunkedness, neighbor disputes, noise pollution, urinating in lifts, family fight, petty theft, molest, refusing to pay taxifare, wet clothing dripping onto lower floors etc. etc.

It started with someone killing cats? then a spate of events happen in Yishun. Everyone just posted "Yishun again?" and become the Infamous meme/trend. Yishun is one of the most secure neighbourhood. Singapore President live there and so does her security details. 😀😀. It boost 2 Army camps nearby. Go Arty boys! it also house another BMT camp in Nee Soon Camp before consolidating to Tekong. During the early 2000s, Car clubs would hang out at Yishun Dam during the night. So Yishun is just another neighbourhood. Just as unsafe as any other Singapore hood. 😁

Social media played a part for sure with stories spreading faster. We’ve done a few heritage walks and found some other areas where gangs used to be based and it’s really interesting to hear the history of some heartland places. Coming from the UK we used to work in some finically and socially deprived areas and they were hard, almost forgotten about in terms of giving support and helping the community sadly. Good things are happening but it will take time.

@@WONDERLUSTworld Singapore have an unfair advantage. 80% of housing area spread across the island are HDB maintained by the government. Thus maintenance is well taken care of. The possibility that an area is less developed is when opposition rule the area for a long time. Upgrading and assets enhancement initiatives in that area are thus given less priority. e.g. Lifts to every floor enhancements We used to joke Hougang being the worse HDB estate due to the fact it was a long time opposition area/ward before Yishun.

@@WONDERLUSTworld Yeah the boar seem young and lost perhaps separated from the pack, so she just running around scared and unfortunately knocked down one victim at that time but she was capture within 12 days pretty crazy stuff. If you guys ever visit Yishun again, you can try visiting ORTO just next to Khatib MRT station. It has the biggest freshwater pond in SG and various activities to do like prawning, fishing, turtle museum, etc it is a great memories for family time especially. But if you want check that place out make sure to visit early because it going to be close down during mid 2023 due to housing development. Another place that I would recommend is the Lower Seletar Airport just located near the Yishun Dam, you can see those small planes, cool cafe, flight simulator game, etc. There's also an hot spring area just north located by Chong Pang and just beside Chong Pang Air Force Camp, where you can enjoy some free hot spring and the cafe there are pretty good as well. Hahah 😂 to confirm - I was drawing a connection for our non-local viewers that the word “orang” is familiar to them… hence following up the statement “orang means man” 😂 but I just watched back and it really does seem like I’m calling them orangutans 🦧 🤣🤣🤣

Yishun used to be really spooky, around the blocks at the northern end of Yishun, surrounded by forests. At night, everything is dim and spooky, roads with morning fog and yellow lights... + some real tragic accidents there, made for some scary nights growing up there.

We used to live in the countryside with lots of fields around, no street lights and you’d hear these animal noises and rustling. I’d never want to go to my car at night if I’d left something in there. 😆

It is more of a banter between town & neighbourhoods. Even Jurong had been bantered many years go. Like it used to be 'Jurong should separate from Singapore and become their own city state' banter. The Yishun takes the limelight becuase of the online tabloids news site. Like there was the 'Build the wall around Yishun' banter in reference to Trump on Mexico-USA border. But now Yishun is now quite bright. There are still many other places in Singapore than look more gloomy than Yishun.

Nay it’s a myth. It’s what locals like to make it sound like, “the most notorious neighbourhood”. But having lived there in many different times of my life, it has a really nice laid back, much desired kampung feel and spirit. I have many great memories living in Yishun.

@@WONDERLUSTworld you covered some of them! One thing I love is the diversity of wild life and seasonal birds visiting the rich Yishun offerings of fruit trees e.g. street lined mango trees opposite junction 9 (rainbow parakeets love to feast on them for the month in season), there’s a lot to experience if we just slow down and watch nature. Side note- It’s also relatively close to the woodlands check point hence maybe drug syndicates deal there? Easier to exit…

It's not bad(except the cat murders). It's just that weird stuff happens there. Btw, your daughter have become quite singaporean. Unless you're a fit-spo, we sgreans do not like walking. Like why, when our transport system is rather accessible. Sure it can be improved but it's so much better than alot of other countries. Westerners who walk everywhere in their sg vlogs is impressive yet sad....😂😝 Awesome for blurring the bg.

We’ve noticed her accent has changed quite a lot and it usually depends on who she is with, her international friends at school or her more local ones. I find accents fascinating! We love to walk! We find you get to see a bit more sometimes and we like to stop and pop into shops along the way too. If we’re going from A-B then it’s public transport but exploring is usually a walk. I’m not quite sure what you mean by blurring the bg though? 🤔

@@WONDERLUSTworld Codeswitch unlocked. You should be proud. I know locals love to say we can codeswitch but not common that ppl can actually do it. I've been using singlish since I finished school and then realized my words aint coming out right when i had to interact with foreign ang mohs last year. My language confidence took a hit that day 😭. I only walk if I'm tight on money. Like if I'm going to different areas in orchard stretch, i wont take transport bcos the total expenses could go up to 10bucks. So I'll just walk n end up only paying 4 bucks for the trips to n from home. Bg= background. Dunno intentional or not. But If I end up in a shot of these vlogs, I'd appreciate my face not get plastered on the net. Many like to argue that technically it is public area but respecting privacy is what i think a civilised society would do.

It’s interesting that although there isn’t a language barrier as such there can be an accent one. I like to try and learn all the little local words and phrases. So many! When filming we make a point to try and film wider so we’re focusing on the area not the people as we’re aware not every one likes being on social media. We notice people move around us not to be on it too which is fine. Good to be considerate.

@@WONDERLUSTworld Yeah, I think that's like the legit standard we should have. Have our own unique accent but doesnt sound low class and easily understood by others. Only a few people I think achieved this. Stefanie sun, jj lin, michelle chong. (And the "aunties" in crazy rich asian?) Even our ministers can't do it. Lol. Oh i see... Yup. Thks for being considerate. 👍🏻

But then, the Singaporean accent is pretty unique and I do love to hear it! I think Singaporeans shouldn’t feel self conscious but proud. Of course, it’s important to be aware of what the other people understands - but that is the art of communication, right? I’m enjoying this thoughtful conversation 😊
