Jump to 2:50 to get right to the point. ***Video Correction: Before assuming the actuator motor is bad like I did in this video there are a few things to check. First, make sure your truck/SUV is in neutral; then with your foot on the brake select the 4x4 option. You may need to wait 5-10 seconds for the actuator to engage. If that does not fix it then move on to step two. Step two, make sure the actuator motor is getting power. There are a few things that can stop the power from getting to the motor a bad module, blown fuse or a bad wiring harness. If the actuator motor is getting power and it still does not move, then you need to replace the actuator motor. I hope this helps and I am sorry for any confusion.

My GOD THANK YOU! I am 66 years old my husband passed away in April and however it happened my 2007 Ford F150 was stuck in 4L. I have worried all day about how to get to work in the am. Looked at your video, went out in the pouring rain, started the truck, put it in neutral and immediately the light went off! Put it in gear and backed down the drive and pulled back forward and truck was fine. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

b4 doing spending money on this part. get inside your truck turn it on so truck is running turn 4x4 knob to 4x4L and put in Nutral while truck is running in nutral. swicht knob to 4x4H wait 5-10 seconds should change on dash to 4x4H and repeat switch knob to 2wd wait 5-10seconds shold switch to 2wd. just to make sure u really need to change out this part. TRUCK WILL NOT DISENGAGE OUT OF 4X4L OR 4X4H IN PARK OR DRIVE TRUCK NEEDS TO BE IN NUTRAL. most peoples problem is not knowing that

Great info snowED. I was stuck in the boonies (still had wifi thank goodness) and found this on Google. Very similar to your method except for the forward and backward movement. It worked for me at the time. To get truck out or 4x4 low. 1. Start Vehicle 2. Switch to 4x4 Low 3. Put in Neutral 4. Switch to 4x4 High 5. Go in Reverse for a bit and then Forward a bit again (You should now be in 4x4 High) 6. Put in Neutral 7. Switch to 2WD You should now be good. If that didn't work, then try repeating step 5 after step 7.

Thank you for a great video . I needed a work truck to haul things and came across a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with the automatic. It ran and drove and I paid only $760 for it . While driving it home . It seemed that the transmission wasn't shifting correctly and the truck wouldn't go faster than about 47 miles an hour and about 2000 RPM's . And if it got faster than 47 MPH, then the truck would surge. And as I was driving the truck down a slope and let off the gas to coast , it was like the transmission was stuck in gear and holding the truck back and causing it , not to coast normal . This is the first Ford I've bought and not familiar with it . I knew it had to be transmission related. I was thinking the transmission was stuck in 4X4 mode . I was wondering if the truck could be driven with the shifter off the crankcase and you answered my question. Thanks for the tip on putting it in 2WD manually. Your video gives me a starting point , to start diagnosing the issue.

My '01 Ranger was stuck in 4 Low, so I came across your video for a tip. About two minutes in, you mentioned to press the brake in - so I jammed both the brake and clutch pedals as hard as I could, and it finally popped back to 2WD. I saw a video about taking the actuator off the motor and turning it by hand freeing it up then re assemble actuator motor and it starts working. The motors build up corrosion in the read head of the actuator and dont know it’s position anymore so it doesn’t move. Kinda like a servo motor. If a servo looses its position it’s still good but wont move because it’s lost position. This happens when the truck hardly ever gets put in 4x4. Always good to put truck in 4wd and run it for a bit at least every month or so.

I grew up in Houlton. Gosh it was nice. I can honestly say that I did not learn a darn thing in high school. (maybe typing) nor did I learn anything in college. Somehow I have survived. I own a home in NH and one in South Florida. I have a 2010 Ford F-150 that i bought new. It is a 4x4 and has never seen any salt or sand. The 4x4 shifter is on the floor. I'm a big old Marine. 235 lbs. and I have pulled that plastic knob off the stick trying to get it to engage. I very seldom have had to use the 4 wheel drive, maybe backing a camper up a wet lawn at my folks place (at night)........what do you think I need to do. It's always done this.

Nicely presented good information. I had an old Jeep Cherokee. It often got stuck in 4 wheel drive. I had to go in reverse to shift out of 4 wheel drive. Luckily I mainly used it to get to work on gravel back roads. That Jeep was hard to kill. Made it through a lot of snow storms. It was on it's second body but the motor was solid. @902isfake6 жыл бұрын
If your 4x4 light isnt coming on at all then its most likely going to be a different issue. 90% of the time the 4x4 motor is going to be bad if your 4x4 light is on and the motor isnt moving, like the video said. My 4x4 light wasnt coming on at all when I selected 4x4 high or 4x4 low and I found out the 4x4 module went bad. If your 4x4 light doesnt come on at all like mine, you'll want to use a test light to see if the module is getting power, and sending the power to the motor. If the module is getting power but you are not getting power to the motor then the module is probably bad, or you have a open wire somewhere. A bad 4x4 switch can also cause the 4x4 indication light to not appear on the dash.

Thanks for the video, trying now to fix my Ranger with this advice. I was wondering if instead of putting a cover plate over the exposed hole, I could just put the old, broken motor back on it until it is warm enough outside to unhook the plastic electrical connection, while also keeping it clean for the winter. I don't want to replace the motor at all because we hardly use the 4x4 and we don't exactly have the funds
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks7 жыл бұрын
I don’t see a problem with leaving the old motor attached as long as you can get the motor to spin to the two-wheel drive position. My motor was ceased, so that was not an option for me. I would defiantly remove the electrical connection to the motor, to ensure that it does not try to go back to the four-wheel drive position while driving.
@alexjung97247 жыл бұрын
If that doesn't work we might just have to make a real nice, metal, cut-to-fit cover plate because we're in Cleveland with a couple inches of snow at the moment. thanks mainely for the quick reply!!
@alexjung97247 жыл бұрын
one more question if you don't mind, does the truck have to be running or can it be off when turning the dial? I'm getting quite a bit of resistance right before the turn dial hits 4H. Originally the turn dial was a little bit to the left of 4L and went easily all the way to right before 4H and now it's giving me some resistance. I'm sure this is probably normal, but I don't want to break the turn dial for obvious reasons so I thought I'd make sure and ask.

Hi, how do you know it is the actuator motor and not just a relay or fuse blown.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks Жыл бұрын
Check all the fuses and if none are blown then it's the switch or the actuator motor. You can check the switch with a multimeter to see if it's still good.
@kencel96036 жыл бұрын
Great video but one thing I'd like to point out is you never checked the harness to make sure power is getting to the actuator. This is my first search and my actuator is not working but I know it could be a faulty switch, blown fuse, or? So before I conclude my actuator is dead if it doesn't work as you described I'd like to make sure that it's getting the proper voltage to make it work. Thanks again for the video, it gives me a starting place.

I assume that motor switched it into low gear?... but wouldn't switch back? If that's the case then you at least know the motor will turn, and the contacts also worked otherwise the gem module wouldn't have turned the motor to begin with, it has to know what position the case is in or it won't stop at the selection you made from the dash switch. The gem sends a signal to a motor relay, one is for hi and one for low select, that sends voltage to the motor. Exact problem I'm having, it will go in low just fine, but not back to 4 hi and 2wd. I'm having to remove the motor, turn the key in the tc, then turn the key on the motor to match, put the motor back on and all seems normal until I switch to 4wd again, then around we go back to the same problem. I don't see how the motor could be bad, it just doesn't get the disengage signal like it's supposed to. Some say it's a relay module, some say it's the gem module. I'm stumped this is really gettin old. Any suggestions?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks5 жыл бұрын
You are right, the motor switched it into 4 wheel low, but would not switch it back to 2 wheel or 4 wheel high. I replaced the actuator motor and now it works just fine. Did you check the harness to make sure power is getting to the actuator.
@garyr70275 жыл бұрын
@@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks I'm coming to the same conclusion, i think the case motor is either bad, or it's the wrong one. When I bought my truck the previous owner replaced the case motor, but when I run the cross reference part number it doesn't match with what I need. According to part of a Ford pdf manual I downloaded my truck uses a specific motor depending on the date it was made within the same year. I have a 97 f150 made in 4 96, it's a early bird for that year, in the middle of production for that year ford made a few changes with it and one of them was the case motor. If i got the right info, and I'm sure i did, ford used two different case motors for that year, the part cross reference numbers must match, if not then it's the wrong motor. I found the right motor online, soon as I get the chance I'm gettin it. Thanks to Ford's odd engineering we have to deal with crap like this. This isn't the first time I've come across this scenario for my truck and it's aggrivating.

@@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks god i have spent so much $ on my ranger recently. lots of new parts including both hub/bearing assemblies new lock outs manual hubs for 4wd. new starter which it needed anyway,. sway bar links new battery optima. new alternator, but 4wd still wont work. i think i may have a bad GEM unit because the wipers are fucked up. both power outlets wont work radio hasnt worked many years, i dont hear that double click sound with all this new shit i got in there WHEN ATTEMPTING TO GO IN 4WD, water is getting in in 2 places the passenger side floor and headliner. so i think the GEM maybe the culprit maybe carO carosion due to water issue.. it is behind the radio. expensive but its too late to look back now with all the new shit i got. ive got to follow through until all the issues are dealt with. i was so disappointed tto find my 4x4 still wont work. i thought new Hubs and manual locks would fix the issue. NOPE! SINCE I DID HOBS AND NEW LOCKOUTS THE 4WD WONT WORK. MY MECHANIC FIGURED ITS A WIRING ISSUE, BUT ACTED LIKE HE DIDNT WANT TO WORK ON IT ANYMORE. WTF DO I DO?? PLEADING TO ANYONE THAT MIGHT KNOW HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEMS I HAVE WITH THIS TRUCK.. IVE ALREADY SPENTT WAY MORE THAN THE TRUCK IS WORTH.

Sounds more like a grounding issue, than a bad GEM unit. I had the same issues with a Pacifica I worked on. I had to get the wiring diagrams off the internet and fix one issue at a time. That car had three bad grounds and five exposed wires!!

The transfer case Motor on my 06 ranger is heavily corroded I think it began acting up on me while driving it's so rusty I think it's causing internal issue in motor so I bought a new one..truck wanted to go into 4x4 a few times so engaged 4x4 a few times and it went away but I'm afraid of this ridiculous motor thing if not changed out could mess up my transfer case inside
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks5 жыл бұрын
Is it still acting up with the new motor? If so I would take it to a professional mechanic.

I would put silicone sealant or .make a gasket on the plastic lid to make sure debris does not get in.

whenever I try to unlocked it manually I felt a resistance. It was free move for a half turn at first and then it felt like there is a spring attached. I couldn't get full turn due to the resistance. How's your's felt,does it springy?
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks6 жыл бұрын
Yes, there will be some resistance and when it goes into 2-wheel you will hear a loud clank. Sometimes the gears can be a bit bound up causing it to have more resistance.

I also have a white (ground?) running to the transfer case along side the harness... how do I remove without breaking it??

can this be done on a chevy silverado 2002 1500HD ??? had my truck stuck in 4high, grinded and clanged until i got a neighbor to manually unlock front end tires from 4x4 with a battery and parts truck wires. now it doesnt make the noises because i took front drive shaft out and its still trying to spin and im sure my transfer case is still stuck in 4x4 high.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks6 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if this will work on your truck. I would check to see if there is an actuator motor on the backside of your transfer case, if so remove it to see if you can manuly shift out of 4x4.

Who’s your mechanic in Maine! Just bought my ranger and when I’m in 5th gear it’s at 5000rpms going 55mph
what if you cant spin the chuck to 2wd? It hits about where 4 is and seems to clunk into something.
@MainelyAcresFarmBrooks6 жыл бұрын
Maybe the wheels are bound and giving resistance, are you on level ground? Maybe have a friend rock the truck back and forth to see if that will allow you to shift it into 2wd. I know this is a no-brainer, but the trucks in neutral right?
@Chris-go9ti6 жыл бұрын
Mainely Acres truck needs to be in neutral. I got it.
