Yeah I’ve been trying the unbleached filters and it takes like 5 minutes to get 750g of water in. So everything is over extracted

Have you tried different boxes and sources for filters? I got a new bag of filters with the new Hario designs and they seem to work well. Are you using the 02 size? Using Brew Coffee I adjust the end pour time to be sooner (2:10 instead of 2:30 min) that way I pour more aggressively and drain sooner.

@@PaulSolt I went ahead and switched to the bleached Hario filters and my coffee has never been better. Bleached filters aren't unhealthy like they used to be, so I feel good about using them. I brew 40g of coffee and around 700g of water. My brew time (not counting a long bloom phase) is around 2 minutes and change. I pretty much use a single pour after the bloom and just change up the flow as needed throughout the brew

The filters I have now take around 10s to drain, but they horribly clog the slurry, and it's not the coffee nor grinder that's the issue (I use Comandante on 30-35 clicks with 22g coffee, takes more than 3:30 to drain). They're the Hario filters with the tab in the middle, with "V60" embossed on them. Awful. EDIT: it seems they're the ones from Netherlands; unfortunately I didn't keep the bag which they were in.

It’s still been super hot or miss for me. Try a new bag or box and see if they work better. I stopped using bad filters because the coffee just isn’t as good as it could be. It should be enjoyable.

Interesting topic, thanks for your input. I'm currently using Melita #2 filters that I fold. Because they came in a box of 100, and are oxygen bleached. Real curious to see if there's any difference for me. I'm using a method that incorporates stirring, so I kind of think maybe the drain time will change. Idk.

Very interesting video, noticed worse results with my bleached filters vs in unbleached. Curios if a second run improves time, I always flush mine first. Wondering if we can posts good brands and where you bought from Amazon is a crap shot I would assume due to high turnover?
@brewcoffeeapp
@brewcoffeeapp 4 жыл бұрын
I find that if I lift the filter up and flush it again it'll drain faster in the water drain test. That may change how it drains during actual brew, but I haven't been able to test it with confidence.

I don't know if there's a good source. For a while I was buying from PrimaCoffee going for the "older" 40-pack white tab-less style, but when I had issues with a bad box, I bought filters from a variety of sources including Amazon. I think what might help more is understanding where the filters were manufactured, using the unique code (stamped in ink) in addition to a SKU to identify the production source.

have you tried any of the re-usable filters? Wonder how they perform against the paper type?
@brewcoffeeapp
@brewcoffeeapp 4 жыл бұрын
Jason Click my sister had one for a bodum pour over and my parents had one for Hario. It doesn’t drain the same, so it tasted off to me. Fine particles over time also clogged it, which made it difficult to clean. There’s surface tension created by the water and paper to the V60 that changes the drain speed vs metal filter. It drained too quick with the metal Hario filter in my limited tests, but it might be worth an experiment.

Put the coffee in a tea bag! This way ALL THE COFFEE is in the cup of water for exactly the right amount of time. No second too many or too short and no filter clogging anymore. The perfect cup of tea.. uhmm coffee. No need to poor over the coffee. You can move the bag a little if you think you need the water to move around.

Tea bags let too much fines I to the water. And also you don't get the water mixing with it if you've got 14-25 grams in a teabag. I hardly see how this is the same.

@@brewcoffeeapp Unfortunately, no. Or at least I don't know if they have a "code" or something on the packaging. I switched away from Hario since I had had several problems with their newer products (coffee grinder, V60, and filters) - seems they were all made by Hario Shanghai.

@@knownuser0815 Try picking up the filter after rinsing it (while it's still draining) it seems to improve the drain speed. During a brew at 1:30-2:00 pick up the filter + coffee if it's draining slow (try not to burn yourself, it's hot!) Those two tips make mine taste a lot better and hit my target timing.

Okay this is just being anal retentive. First off, of course the second time you put water through a wet filter it will run through faster. duh. Second, you have forgot to factor in that you won't be pouring water in that fast if your making a v60 coffee, and you would have coffee in there which soaks up the water. Third, your using the wrong kettle, get a gooseneck. Making a good cup of coffee is not about how fast you can get the water through. If anything is going to screw it up its using beans which are not fresh, and bad water, the wrong heat, and getting the ratio of water to coffee wrong. It has little to do with the filter. 4 seconds longer isn't going to give you a better or worse coffee.
@brewcoffeeapp
@brewcoffeeapp 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks J M! I brew with a Gooseneck kettle, but this was a pre-brew check. I have had major issues with filters starting in 2018. From my tests slow draining filters stall at the end of the brew. This test is a way to check if you have a filter problem, before you waste a good brew of coffee. If it's slow, I can't hit my recipe timing even when I pour very aggressively.
@-8_8-
@-8_8- 3 жыл бұрын
You're not even trying to understand the point. If those filters take that long, and guess what, they were wet 2 seconds after he started, then they will take longer when filled. If they take longer when filled you certainly can't count on a single pour to work, and you can't plan on how long it takes in a 4:6. It's not being retentive, it's taking the play and error out of your equipment on the journey to consistency.
