Had one that overheated constantly, on a long road trip out of desperation we pulled the thermostat and resealed with gasket made from cereal box and lip balm and then re routed the rear window washer tube to the radiator and poked holes in it to mist the radiator so it would not over heat in traffic so bad, that same trip the drivers rear brake fell apart and ate up the drum we had to rebuild in parking lot... oh the memories.

Way back when we were taught to check dampeners. Years go by and I never found a bad one. I don't remember all the timing issues I was having with a FE390, but I chased them around for a few days. I probably finally set TDC at the cylinder and walla! The timing marks were nowhere in sight. iirc I'm pretty sure what we were taught was to always replace the dampener at overhaul. Never reuse an old one on a good build.

Air lock stops coolant from flowing. Coolant gets too low or after filling back up. Air pocket can bleed out at temperature sensor. Back of cylinder head driver side. Very small. Only do it cold. Tilt nose down hill. No air pocket , no overheating. Do not do it when hot.

@@tacticalrepair Sir , I need some advise on a Jeep if you can ? I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0 , 2 wh , dr, w/air , automatic. Issue is no heat and winter is coming . Heres what what I've done so far . First I had a blown head gasket , water in the oil and that . Fixed that . Tested new thermostat in boiling water , had a leaking heater core , fixed that , back flushed it and both hoses get hot now . The vents all open up when using the climate control . Still no heat . It seems like something isn't getting the message when I turn the knob from cold to hot ? Also the air conditioning works fine . When I turn the knob to cold for the air conditioning it gets the message . Ive got an 86 Prelude and it even has a simple component right on a heater hose that you can see it change from cold to hot , but not this Jeep . That'd make life too easy . There is no water mixed with the oil the rsdiator and over fill is full of coolant so I don't know what the issue is! New fan too.

You probably have a minor crack in the head or a very small headgasket leak from a cylinder to the cooling passages. Suggest getting yourself a headgasket leak detector kit.

Ive got a 2000 XJ 4.0 and started to run at 220 and overflow in my reservoir after parking. Did a total flush, changed the thermostat and it still ran hot and bubbled over in the overflow. So assumed it was a headgasket but no coolant in oil or vice-versa. So replaced that and didnt see any crack in the head while doing it.... well, it still runs hot and bubbles up!! Any thoughts of whats wrong or where to start? Did I miss seeing a cracked head? Could it be a cracked block? Could it be the harmonic balancer youre talking about? Sick of throwing money at this thing

My Jeep is 04, 4.0. I told the mechanic 210 means it's HOT. He thinks it's ok at 210 and up to 220 or so. NO! I know my Jeep! It gets to 210 sitting idle in parking lot lately which is abnormal. If it sits long enough it starts making a constant low noise (bad). So. I'm thinking it's the fan or something related. My dad told me replace thermostat yearly because it's cheap and they wear out. I'm going to buy one and request that.

Mine overheats running for some time in highway at high speeds above 65MPH, even if motor is running at less than 2000 RPM, and when overheats water leaks from the antifreeze reservoir, once I go out of highway it goes back to normal, about 210, I was thinking to replace the cap, but it could be an issue this but still not sure why temp is normal at low speed city driving, with constant stops and high RPM and bad at high speed low RPM
