A mud hut and a cob house are two different things. Cob is made with sand, straw, mostly clay and sometimes a little cow manure to enhance the strength. The wrong mix shrinks and lacks strength.

I want a company to do this in the USA. Probably not legal under building codes. If I ever wanted to build a home like this, I'd probably need a company in my own state, Michigan, and get special permission from a local government for building materials like this. There are areas here with both more clay and more sand in the soil.

Clay bricks can carry 7.5 mega Pascal of compressive stress and it made by earth materials, even load bearing structures can also be built with clay bricks and lime mortor ,one concern is that it requires more space , In order to achive sustainable buildings we must look into the filler items (aggregate, cement, additives) which are used in framed structures (slabs+columns+foundations) and most important of all durability which can only be achieved with proper design, proper mix proportions,and proper execution.

Thanks for sharing! I wonder if there are ways to further improve the characteristics using waste materials that are not biodegradable like plastics? Kind of like a polymer high performance concrete or maybe like the open source ultra high performance concrete formulas instead of using steel fibers, using plastic? Thanks for sharing! Great topic and especially useful if we can reduce the thermal energy used to process the materials required.

Addition of cement to mud defeats the very purpose of using mud.... Even common bricks are also made from mud.... then whats the difference between construction using bricks & stabilized mud blocks
@River-io3dc
@River-io3dc Жыл бұрын
i think because they can be site made, its cheaper to buy bags of cement and mix with your own mud than it is to buy bricks and pay for shipping/delivery. 90% of the brick comes from something you already own so its cool to use what you have
@gabrielangello9702

As @River says... In addition, these stabilized bricks are not fired the way bricks are. The benefits include using freely available site/foundation soil, using 9-10 times less cement, drastically reducing construction costs, improving thermal efficiency, and living in a healthy abode.
@stocktrading5123
@stocktrading5123 Жыл бұрын
These bricks are not oven baked like other mud bricks ,so u save lot of firewood in the process.These bricks are only sun dried . Cement only 10% is used coz it gives bonding to mud particles and 10% cement and mud powder mixture is used to join blocks .If u use only mud to join blocks then one rain will wash away all your joints so cement is added for bonding and stabilizing finally waterproof clear coat is applied.

The explanation about strength is good but what about termites and fungus growth on the structure during rainy season. If there is fungus on the walls how can it be cleaned as there would be no plastering or white wash on the walls

CSEB is one of the technique where you need all this setup for soil testing particularly for construction. but there are other ways of curating beautiful hand sculpted homes. I believe you can build house with all sort of soil with minimum sustainable additives and no cement at all.

what a scam. so its not the mud, but the sand that's used. This exactly what is used in modern construction as well, quarry dust, cement and mittel (crushed rocks in size used for construction). We used to use sand before mittel. Sand was stopped as they were taken predominantly from river beds which degraded river life. So, if there's no sand in your land, you don't simply use the mud. So, these are not mud structures.

Mud houses or otherwise known as cob, are houses made with mud- soil from the site from under 3 feet depth which must contain sand and clay, then also add straw and water. What you shown in this video is something other than a mud material for a house, you washed out the clay and added cement which is just sand and cement, the very which thing you say it's bad for the environment. Conclusion: this is just clickbait or the title should be rephrased: is the sand content enough in the soil of your property for the cement mix to build your house. This video deserves more dislikes

They didn't "wash out the clay" from what was used for the block. They took a sample of the soil and washed out the clay in the sample to get an accurate measurement of the ratio of sand-to-clay in the mixture. The blocks tested and eventually produced for construction still have their original clay content.

It appears that you completely misunderstood the video. They washed out the mud to check the sand content in the soil to determine if they need to add more or less sand to the mixture. Thats all. The actual mud used in making the bricks is not washed. Sand and cement are added based on the previous lab testing. So, the post is not an accurate understand.
