Is Your Worship Team Overplaying?

In this video, Don gives insight into to the common dilemma of a band that overplays and also explains what to do if you're not the worship leader.
Daniel asks:
"Hi Don, I just started watching your videos from KZbin and it's been an answer to my prayers. I sometimes play the main piano and keys at church. I feel that the whole band is getting super loud and everyone does what they want, but not what they're supposed to. I watched a video where you were playing with the band and you were giving examples about when people play how they are supposed to, and when they just start showing off. What should I do since I'm not the main leader? The main leader plays the main piano when I play the keyboard and that person just does too much when they're playing the piano."

Ive been showing that video to any worship team member I encounter in churches. As an Music arranger ive learnt a lot about discipline while playing an instrument and create that space that lets the singer communicate the message instead of the music be the main attraction. Its juts like Don says..less is more.

This is very timely.. Now a days many churches worship team do overplaying. They make it so loud. Thanks Don for this great videos. I will share it with our Worship team. God bless you more! -Since i was in high school i listen to your song,i find your song so personal & very sincere. -13 yrs ago February 11, my 18th birthday souvenir for the event is a CD, half of its contents is your song. -& that same year April, i almost died because of excessive blood loss because of my hormonal imbalances, while we traveling going to the hospital i told my father to play the CD, and "I Am The God That Healeth Thee" played i sang with it and then i fell asleep and when we reach the hospital i heard the doctor said Thank God that i was brought in the hospital because i'am almost 50/50 condition. Now, i'am 31, married (still no baby because of my hormonal problems) still serving the Lord Jesus in little ways, and supporting my husbands ministry, teaching the Word of God. For His glory! -This is Phoebe Gutierrez,31 y/o from the Philippines.

Very good answer. Its not about us, its about being sensitive to our Lord's leading. Sometimes that's quiet and intimate. Scripture says make a joyful noise not a showful noise.

Why is it says in a song of Planetshakers, "Turn it up, this sound of praise Make it louder than any other"?

Every church has a different culture, I overplay at church, Because it says in psalms 33:3 play skillfully unto the Lord

"More" needs to be managed. "More" all the time makes it impossible to intense the music. The most important part is the vocal, the music is accompaniment. It's more important to focus on God, than to show the musical skills. 16th notes on the Hi Hat can never be that important, that the drummer focused on the instruments only.

Dixieland Jazz isn't mend to singalong. Worship songs has interludes and intros without vocals and there you can play much more. One example is "In the river". The guitar riff plays in intro, interlude and the last chorus. The other players keeps it simple, but it sounds great and powerful. Not always a sound technician realize, when an acoustic guitar needs a low cut about 800 Hz and a low cut about 100 Hz. So the guitar player uses a capo, turns his guitar into a steel string ukulele and doesn't have any conflict with another guitar.

@@antoniorichard753 skillfully doesn't mean all the time. When I play pads and chords, pretty often I reduce harmonies. There is a chord with the notes C E G B. So I play with one hand and C major and on the other a E minor. Or I interpret it as slash chord Em/C.

It's not about overplaying. It's about the heart, the motive why you play. Showing off or worshipping. It's never about us, it's about Jesus. This is not limited to playing an instrument or singing. Worshipping in music can be done with a lot of notes, or with very few. Let's not misunderstand avoiding overplaying with misplaced modesty.

hi sir don...how will i tell my music team that they are overplaying without offending them.
@DonMoenTV
@DonMoenTV 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Billy, that's a great question. The most important thing to do is understand how they receive criticism or direction. Keep this in mind and be sure to tell them in a way that does not reflect them as a person or would lead them to believe they are doing anything "wrong". You just would like them to be doing something different than what they are playing. All music has its time and place! Hope this helps, blessings!

Don, you know that example you’re talking about sounded so much better and connected better between the musicians together and would connect better with the congregation because people are being genuine. Unfortunately, you’re missing out on what genuine worship and organisation can be like. You’re so so wrong. Because of this mindset you’re encouraging, I have found churches are so fake now and can no longer find faith in a church and in your music. This is horrible!
