I've had ADHD for longer than I've had internet, let alone Twitter or a smart phone. That said, social media is exactly the sort of thing that would keep the attention of someone with ADHD. It moves quickly and constantly has new stuff, so it's hard to get bored, much like KZbin. I can kill several hours at a time flipping through Twitter and KZbin if I'm not careful. I'd imagine if there's a correlation, it's that social media exacerbates the symptoms, rather than causing them.

Others have already pointed out that ADHD is largely a genetic disorder, at least as far as modern studies have found, but I still feel the need to just throw my two cents in and say that this is kind of a clickbait-y title and subject for Scishow. The shortest answer to the question is actually one of the most accurate: "No, social media can't cause ADHD." I understand the need to grab the attention of those just browsing KZbin, but when you're trusted for scientific perspectives on questions, I can't help but feel the rules are slightly different. I don't mean to directly attack anyone at SciShow, or to say that an educational channel simply cannot ethically pose/debate questions that have already been answered by science in their video titles, or even in the videos themselves, but this one really rubbed me the wrong way. It's already hard enough to make people, especially parents and educators, believe that ADHD is not only a real "condition," but that it isn't actually the result of something going wrong in the brain of a child. It's a largely genetic condition which changes the way the person's brain develops and functions in a very specific way, and is extremely unlikely to be caused by anything aside from that very particular difference in brain development.

It's interesting that back when I was a kid, nobody could actually pick up on ADHD symptoms, and we got written off as lazy. TV was usually the culprit, even though I found it difficult to actually sit down and watch stuff without getting distracted by something else. I didn't have a computer until I was 13 (in 2001), so internet access, let along computer access, was only at school. We sat around on MSN, then MySpace popped up and we went on that - that's the extent of social media for the 00s teenager. I spent some time on various message boards, and we'd wait 20 minutes to watch a silly flash animation on dial up. We didn't have smart phones (they were hella expensive and data plans didn't exist), I also didn't have my first mobile phone until I was 16, and it had a camera, and played mp3s, which were features worth bragging about. I pretty much spent my spare time playing video games at the arcade and at home on a console of some sort, but I literally couldn't put that energy into reading a book because my brain thinks it's not an efficient means of extracting and processing information. All in all, I got diagnosed as having ADHD two years ago, which explains why I can't sit down and read a damn book (that'll unfortunately even include yours, Hank!). And I'm glad KZbin exists, and creators exist; I'd be lost without SciShow.

Bad in 2009 I got diagnosed. I had a hard time in school. One of the signs was I couldn’t look into my teachers eyes. There were times where people (primarily teachers) accused me of lying cause I couldn’t look them in the eye. Alongside my ADHD I had dyslexia so that was super hard. I was around 6-9yrs old. It's worth noting that external stimuli _can_ cause changes in the brain, other than the obvious (learning, memories, etc.), and these changes can lead to pathological states (depression being one). That said, the study was conducted on people too old to receive an ADHD diagnosis regardless of any reported symptoms. I guess we can blame sensationalism in the media.

That's some black and white thinking and the brain is more complicated than that. ADHD can't be classified as only being a structure in the brain. ADHD probably is affected by neurochemicals, brain structure, and neuroreceptors. All or most of those things can be influenced by the environment. The brain's structure can change, neurochemicals can change, and neuroreceptors can also be affected. Even if ADHD is classified as something you start off with, the symptoms might be able to appear afterward, but we don't know. There isn't enough testing to come to a conclusion.

Raiswood _studios , the developing brain responds and adapts to what ever stimulus it receives from its environment , theres a crucial time period ( when your young) were your brain grows and what ever stress you put on your brain it will organize its self to take on that stressor more efficiently , thats why babies are given lots of colorful toys and books , its so that they can expose their brains to these things while its still moldable, and thats also why drug use in children leads to worse outcomes than drug use in adults.

It might surprise you how plastic and malleable the brain, and even your whole body, remains after puberty and through adolescence/early adulthood. Though I have nothing conclusive to link you right now, I suggest trying find some of this stuff! Not only that, but if the child experiences a unique social media/electronically based upbringing, there isn't any reason for us to believe that it couldn't have an effect on the structure/result of heir brain connections. Obviously all of these changes would occur chronically, but external environments can play a significant role in development. Finally, "'symptom' doesn't mean a lot" may be fair, but it's important to realize that symptoms are what characterize the issue. My personal feeling is that, like autism, ADHD is likely to lie on some sort of spectrum which constitutes various manifestations of the condition.

I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 35 yrs old. It was missed for so long because my disability made it hard for me to get up and go but I was hyper verbal, had a tendency to ramble or go on tangents that led nowhere, forget what I was doing if anything happened to catch my attention (like listening to background music in a store would distract me from someone directly speaking to me, I kept thinking about the song and couldn’t focus on what they were saying to me which led to lots of “hey, are you listening to me?”) I think I wasn’t diagnosed because people found my incessant talking adorable rather than annoying and thought that I shouldn’t be saddles with such a label at such a young age. I already had dyslexia as a learning disability and spina bifida for the neurological/physical disability. I wish I had been diagnosed sooner. It would’ve helped explain why I was struggling so hard to learn and how to combat distractions of the mind. Now I’m almost 38 and trying to go back to college, a better informed if older student.

Problem with people is that the general population assumes that ADHD is about being easily distracted... But it's actually more of not being able to use executive functioning to filter out what is important to focus on. Social media is designed to grab the attention of the general population. It doesn't matter if they have ADHD or not, every time the phone vibrates or chimes with a new notification, ADHD or not it'll grab your attention. There are also a LARGE batch of ADHD symptoms ignored in that study like insomnia rates, being hyper-responsive to emotions, lack of impluse control (think fidgeting, skin picking, nail biting, blurting out things out of turn, interrupting people), and time blindness. Another spot is the DSM still focuses on children but all of the above symptoms can be diagnosed in adults so being a child isn't a prerequisite for diagnosis anymore but due to a general lack of understanding it keeps stigmatizing it as a childhood mental illness and not one that is followed through the entire life of the individual.

When I'm on KZbin, I usually prefer to watch shorter videos over longer videos. Unfortunately, like salted peanuts, I find that I keep wanting one more, and keep clicking on more videos, and if I'm not careful, I'll end up wasting a lot of time on KZbin, and not getting much else done. Also, I tend to be overstimulated by watching several shorter videos, especially when they cover entirely different subjects. One solution is to watch longer videos, so I'm focused on only one subject for a longer period of time, or do something else that requires focus, like read a novel. Of course, it's not just KZbin videos, but online comic strips, email, and other activities that don't require too much time or focus. So I think this is more a function of trying to multi-task, rather than something specific to the internet or social media; it's just that computers, the internet, and social media make it easier to engage in multi-tasking than it was before the personal computer/smart phone/internet age.

As someone who didn't recognize her ADHD symptoms as such until the age of 21, I kind of held the association between it and internet activity as a kind of pet theory, mostly because of a particular video game character I Headcanon as having a form of attention disorder (it's The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3, for those wondering). Now, she also doesn't act how you might expect someone with ADHD to act, but I had an educated guess that a character living in the 1920's-60's where, even when research into ADHD was in its infancy, it was primarily associated with children, along with not having our beloved little distraction rectangles in our pockets, the disorder would probably present a little differently than it would today. Nice to see I was kinda on to something.

I believe it's not as much about the social media or internet, as about how or in what way you use them. Or rather than saying them, it's better to say what kind of actions you do the most in general. Actions that require lots of attention or actions that require spreading the attention or hyperactivity. Let me explain on my own experience, as I child, I used to draw a lot, I used to draw hours at end. Later on, I started to do programming and learning languages, that was like between 2010-2015. I could literally spend an entire day programming, or copying new sentences down onto a notebook. My attention span was so long and my deep thinking about things (while taking my time doing the thinking) was so frequent, that I was almost diagnosed as an autistic child. But later on, as I started to use the social media more and more, scrolling and scrolling, searching for more and new and better entertainment than I've found before, checking for new messages, new notifications, new distractions, as I started to do multiple things at the same time, like doing the social media at the same time as eating, listening to audiobooks or KZbin videos while doing manual work, wanting to do and have everything at the same time and instantly, all this and more has messed me up so much, my attention span has shrank from my 18/19 by the time of my 20/21 so much, that I'm having problems doing one thing for longer than a few minutes, at night I can't fall asleep, it's gotten really bad, so I have decided to stop scrolling and start doing more attention heavy activities more, I tried takimg slow walks, jogging in the nature, reading books, meditating, and it's slowly getting better, but it's really hard, I'll keep on doing my best, I believe it'll get back to normal one day...

Harishimomo I don't know I was diagnosed with ADHD back in 1989 before social media was even a thing and in my experience my attention span is directly proportional to how much interest I have in the thing to which I'm trying to pay attention I can focus intently on things I'm interested in for hours and hours but if it's something that I'm not interested in don't care about or find to be boring and pointless I won't be able to focus on that at all and will be distracted by mostly looking for things to be distracted by just to avoid having to concentrate on something I dont want to think about. I'm guessing having access to social media through the smartphone in their pocket provides everyone with the ultimate distraction so if what they're supposed to be doing in real life gets just a little boring out comes the smart phone and they're on social media not dealing with boring because they now have the option of being as distracted as someone with ADHD in the face of something boring

Here’s a clarification master list for the comment section ya’ll! “ADHD is a mental disorder/illness”, ADHD is a psychiatric disorder and a disability. “Drugs* do more harm than good!” I literally cannot get through my day without my *medication (come on we all know you’re using the word “drugs” to scare people) so I think I can deal with the appetite loss. “You can develop ADHD” you literally can’t. “ADHD doesn’t exist” Look I’m not even sure how to respond to this anymore.

This headline is irresponsible. Perpetuates the idea that ADHD isn't a serious and well-defined neurodivergence that has way more to do with hardwired neural pathways than attention span or hyperactivity. There are a lot of damaging ableist tropes about ADHD and this SciShow episode didn't do enough to dispel them.

Title : "Does youtube cause adhd?" Video: no At most this was a SLIGHTLY clickbaity title that is completely relevant to the content of the video. I see no reason for this to cause offense and it seems perfectly reasonabld. In addition the complaint that something didn't do enough is a little bit ridiculous. To put it context it would be like a new medicine increasing the survival of brain cancer by 10% and people complaining.

Can’t see how this works. I had ADHD growing up as this is the defining factor which did not include internet let alone social media. I think we had our first computer which only had minesweeper and The Sims at age 10 at the earliest. I do believe that those of us with ADHD definitely rely on the digital world a lot since it keeps our minds at ease from instance satisfaction that indicates ADHD comes before the social media use.

It's nice that you put a disclaimer about ADHD symptoms not being the same as being diagnosed with ADHD, but I wish that the term "ADHD Symptom" hadn't been used by the authors in the first place, there are plenty of other terms one could have used or a combination of them.

Since differences in the energies of photons correspond exactly to differences in their frequencies, those really are the colors of the x-rays that are being detected. Granted, they're not any of the colors we see, but they're the real colors of those tissues in x-ray "illumination."

Study finds link between teens' internet use and the development of ADHD symptoms. Researchers looked at LA high school students who used social media 14 times a day for two years. The teens who used digital media the most were about twice as likely to report ADHD-like symptoms. But the study doesn't prove that your online social life causes ADHD. The study's authors couldn't say for certain if this association is /causal; it could be that checking Twitter every five minutes messes with your brain in a way that increases the likelihood of developing ADHD. Researchers have developed a super-sensitive detector that can detect tiny differences in the energy of each photon. It can translate that difference into colors, giving doctors a much more detailed view of your insides.

My concentration span and ability to finish a project has been down the shitter the past couple of years, compared to when I was a teenager and could sit reading a book or writing a story for hours -but then, I already have aspergers as well as a generalised anxiety disorder, so chances are the recent improvements in technology have only given me more fun ways to get distracted, and aldulthood has made me ten times more anxious than I was before, so it's highly unlikely that technology is making my symptoms worse 😂

I think it’s because 50 years ago sitting a classroom was boring but you went home and you had nothing interesting to do like video games or watching KZbin or checking social media. Kids get bored easily when you get locked into a room for an hour 6 times a day and teach boring repetitive things for 180 days. I graduated so it’s not like I’m 11 and just don’t wanna go to school. We teach kids for the first 5 years of their lives to talk and walk and then the rest of their lives to sit down and shut up. Not saying school isn’t important it definitely is but there could be different ways of going about it.

I suppose you could say that those who are more prone to show symptoms who may not have shown them prior to this boom in connectivity and technology are now showing them because of easy access. Much like once we understood that dyslexia was a thing suddenly many many more people had it. Its not that it turned up over night but that it has always been there. Although this isnt a great analogy as dyslexia was always there where as something like ADD/ADHD may not have been to this extent and has been triggered in people because of the easy access to information and distractions. Though its probably going to take a couple more generations to fully understand the effects of access and technology as more and more of the population grows up more connected than ever.

from everyday experience I can say that ADHD doesn't really have a "point of focus" like you won't be constantly checking your phone if you have adhd in order to get distracted because you don't really need it to get distracted, I see many people constantly checking their phones (it look even worse than adhd actually) but they don't have adhdish behavior if for some reason the phone isn't around.........come to think of it 99% of the time it's around but whatever you will probably talk about all this in the video which I've not yet watched..

Maybe....I dunno. What I DO know is that it has been years since I have watched a video at normal speed. Dependent on how fast/foriegn the speech of a video is I am boosting speed between 1.25 & 1.5 and it seems like it trends upward as I get older. In fact I watched a random Bernie Sanders speech video recently and he is one of the few people I can bump up to 2.0 without it sounding "off". So dont know if that co-relates towards ADD or not, but it DOES correlate to the effect that on demand video consumption cropped to be digestible 2-10 min videos DOES hone ones capacity for consuming and comprehending video footage watched with greater consumption effectively honing ones capacity to view and consume the content.
