Isaac Levitan: A collection of 437 paintings (HD)
Description: "One of the best landscape artists among the progressive group of 19th century Russian artists known as the Itinerants (Wanderers), Isaac Levitan's main contribution to Russian art was his development of the "atmospheric landscape", achieved through his supreme mastery of colour, light and shade. Although the depiction of light was crucial to his compositions, as it was to those of Monet and Sisley, Levitan was a realist rather than an Impressionist. Devoted to naturalism and plein air painting, he had a gift for portraying all the seasons of the year, different times of the day and an infinite variety of natural views. Famous examples of his landscape painting include works like Secluded Monastery (1890, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow), and Vladimirka (The Road to Vladimir) (1892, Tretyakov), as well as evocative works like Golden Autumn (1895, Tretyakov), Spring Flood (1897, Tretyakov), and Birch Grove (1889, Tretyakov), all bought by Pavel Tretyakov. Levitan was an active participant in artistic life; he gave lessons at the Moscow School of Painting, where he himself had trained, was actively involved the Moscow Club of Literature and Art, and exhibited regularly with such associations as the World of Art and the Munich Secession (1892). Now ranked among the top modern artists within the landscape genre, Levitan is considered to be one of the most influential figures in Russian Painting of the 19th-Century."

@Nallah108. Hello Nallah. I had never heard of this man. I sat through every painting. Some of them looked like photographs. I preferred the impressionistic ones, the simple ones, the ones with stark contrasts. They were all beautiful. What a treat to have discovered this artist! Cheers

My wife descends from the oldest sister Therese born in 1856 who married Pierre Birtchsnsky. They had seven children of which Arcadi, the penultimate son is my wife’s branch and one of the siblings that migrated to France during the Russian revolution with his kids and wife Katia with a few of Levitans paintings among their few personal belongings. Arcadi has two girls and one son : Pierre who is my wife’s grand father. I don’t know if I got you more confused with this info . Cheers !

I've been an artist all my life and I'm 66 now. Well, for most of my life I've identified as an abstract artist. But you know, I have to say, I just love painting, and I love the work of Isaak Levitan! And many other realist painters. I can't say I love the work of all realist painters. But I don't love the work of all abstract painters either. Usually I can find the wonderfulness in any painter who obviously loves to paint as much as Isaak Levitan did. The joy of painting just shines from every painting so strongly - what a wonderful legacy he left :)

Could not agree with you more. We do not honour our Artists as we ought......at the very least assuring they make a 'living' . Con Artists abound but a 'real' Artist loves what he or she does and very often it shows in their work.I remember seeing a Van Gogh and being moved to tears. The energy was palpable. To paraphrase Harry Chapin: Here is a toast to the thousand young artists who failed because they tried.

Through the paintings of Isaac Levitan we see the wounded soul of the poet by Russian nature. Each of his paintings is a state of his soul. On the one hand they are Sunny bright and warm. The artist is happy. At the same time, he wants to prolong his state of mind. In these pictures, he finds peace and quiet. In these paintings, Isaac Levitan finds refuge. But here comes a new state of sadness and the pictures immediately change in color and shape. Thank you !

I understand how you feel. I've always drawn and sketched. When my children were small I took courses in art. I fell so deeply into my paintings, that I suddenly realized it was taking time away from my children, who only had me. So I set aside painting until my children were mostly grown. Then I began again. I'm now retired and I oil paint. Many of Issac Levitan's paintings make me feel like weeping, they seem so tenderly done. Maybe it's from melancholy because the vastness of nature will never again exist the way he saw it.

Wonderful paintings!! It shows that a great work can be made of virtually any subject, no matter how humble or "ordinary", and that's a fine lesson for us all seeking that "grand view" in a landscape (although he has those too in this retrospective presentation). By his works, among other things, he appears to have been a student of the effects of water, its reflections, and its many and varied characteristics in a painting; and hence he mastered them all!!!

It is his management of the composition: the distribution of the areas, the tensions generated by their proportions, the order of reading, in short, the structures that, with total discretion but with enormous mastery, support what appears to be a landscape, when in reality is a statement about nature. I am sure of all this, because to the educated eye it is discreetly evident. There is a lot to learn from this artist, even for those who lean towards abstract painting (Although these are also abstract in their own way)

This. All this. I just found my favorite artist. I've loved art for 50 years, but somehow never found it until now. I love how he has different styles, but each one feels so alive and brings you there, feeling what he felt while you see the world through him. Gosh, it's a high. It's bittersweet for me, because I long to be able to do what he did. Seeing beautiful art is the only time I ever feel jealousy in my life. I'm sorry for that.

Truly a very accomplished painter. I've never heard of Levitan but can see he is an equal to Matisse, Monet, Turner and the early works of Van Gogh. A real master of his craft that is a joy to see. Thank you

I love his work. He captures a different light and mood to each painting as you feel the atmosphere throughout each one. I was mesmerized by his brush string with an accuracy to each painterly affect.

Another artist from Russia I was not familiar with. Although this is pretty typical, there are many great Russian painters that are pretty much unheard of in the West. At times, his ability to capture light is absolutely remarkable. He is one of those painters that you could almost feel the temperature of the air by how he's painted the light.
