A freeze miser might not waste as much water. And another good way to siphon, is to fill hose with water from spigot first, hold water in with thumb, stick in tank and let go of other end and as water leaves hose it'll start pulling water from tank.

freezemiser on the hose end we don't have really any plumbing that is frostline ready so a freezemiser on the hose worked great

If you submerge the whole hose in the trough till the air is out and then put your hand over one end and pull it out it works like a siphon tube and will get to running without having to suck the air out of it.

That’s what I have done in the past. Isaac doesn’t need to do that, he has powerful lungs!

Thanks for the video! You could buy a throttle valve to help regulate the water coming out of it. They aren’t that expensive less than $3 and you can use it for other things too.

Gorgeous view - beats any corner office! The cows dont give a care to the cold! They are clean, dry, fat and happily eating.

Hi Greg What about a solar water pump pumping the water back ?

I just put a spigot valve in my tank and turn it on slightly to control flow.

Any idea how many gallons per hour flow when set at the lowest flow volume?

If the cattle drink the trough down will they not stop the siphon??
@gregjudyregenerativerancher7 күн бұрын
There is 100 gallons in there, only 3-4 cows come to drink at one time. If you had them all drinking at once, it would not work. In the winter they don’t drink as much water as summer. Used this method for years, works well.

@gregjudyregenerativerancher sounds good. I'm in Ireland and keep my cattle in sheds for the winter due to Government regulations . I turn the valve down to a trickle on the mains when it's due to freeze , I have an open loop on the system feeding a few 1000 litre containers , these will fill after a few days, they're overhead and I can syphon water with a 1"inch hose if the trough ball cock freezes. I always have a reserve of water in case the mains is switched off by the water utility company to maintain the reservoir. My 1000 litre containers are also connected to the roof of the shed to collect rain water. I only have to rely on the mains during dry periods. I love your operation, unfortunately farms here in Ireland are smaller, 40 acres is average, The suckler herd is in decline, the average size is only 10 - 15 cows, mostly hobby farms ran well by people with an off farm income.
