Isaac Arthur If anything, I'd say the exact opposite thing: adolescent subjects (algebra, calculus, physics that involves those things...) are the ones where you can _most_ justify formal schooling, and little kids are the ones who most need _not_ to be in schools* - the more universal and obviously-useful something is, namely reading, writing, arithmetic, the _less_ there's a need to _make_ people learn it. Finland, at least, is half-way there; they start school at seven. * Bearing in mind that I don't consider the likes of Sudbury Valley School to actually be a school - it's more like a modern-day analogue of the Environment of Evolutionary Adaptation, which nobody would call a school.

The kids TV series "Les Argonautes" (Télé Québec) used the concept of a colonization fleet, where there were a few core ships containing the industrial base, and hindreds of small "family home" ships that were relatively autonomous. The plot included many cases where one of the industrial core ships is used to 3D print or create replacement parts for the other core ships when they are damaged, or even to build a new "family home" ship when one is destroyed.

The 5G evasive maneuver reminded me of a scene from a show called Knights of Sidonia. A rediculausly huge generation ship had to do a double digit high G emergency maneuver and something like 1/3 of its crew died as a result. I don't remember the exact g-force but I do remember thinking that it would kill a bunch of people. I also don't remember the exact death toll but it was insanely high.
@garethbaus54712 жыл бұрын
For double digit G forces 1/3 of the population seems pretty low.
@mechredd2 жыл бұрын
@@garethbaus5471 the crew had been genetically modified to better survive in space so the high G's may not have been as big of a problem for them as I first thought. Splattering against the wall when their safety harnesses broke was the problem graphically depictedin the scene. The ship was built out of a hollowed our asteroid and was something like 1000 years old. It had several large open areas inside that contained small cities. Some walls broke, and many hard points that people tethered themselves to failed. People would essentially fall sideways for a quarter mile before hitting a main bulkhead or building at several times terminal velocity.

Imagine that a 'century ship' with a projected travel time of 100 years might arrive at their destination only to find that a faster ship with better tech left 50 years later but arrived a decade earlier.

Hi Arthur, After seeing this video for the second time, I got an idea of how to brake a starship at the destination star. Instead of using the braking method you suggest by sending a series of starships each braking a little and thereby helping the next, I suggest this: 1) Send your starship using stellaser 2) Your starship is a giant "Mass driver" that can accellerate packages (Projectiles) using magnetism. 3) When approaching the destination star, fire off Projectiles in a series of shots. This will slow you a little down. 3a) The projectiles will have the speed of your Starship and the speed added by the Mass driver. 3b) The Projectiles is fired in a way that they will slingshot around the star and come back to you. 3c) The "giant Massdriver starship" can now catch the projectiles doing the reverse of firing off projectiles. (And possible magnetically adjusting projectiles' flight-vector before catching them, like a buzzard ramjet is thought to do with hydrogen) 3d) Your speed will be greatly reduced by "catching" these high-speed projectiles. 3e) The faster your starship goes, the faster the projectiles are. 3f) You only have to add "a little" energy to the projectiles, not much matter. And you can regain your mass by catching it going back to you. 4) Of course you will have to be very exact at firing the projectiles, and it's potential dangerous, but hey this is SFIA :-) 5) You will actually be able to accellerate using this "mass-less" technique as well. 6) As long as we depend on mass for propulsion, this has to be the most efficient way of accellerating. Only adding energy for accelleration. 7) Without doing any math, I can conceive that only a smaller mass (maybe 1% of the starship) needs to be projectiles for any starship speed. (remembering 3a, and the fact that you can adjust the parameters to fit: firing time, projectiles speed etc.) What do you think? Isn't this a way better way of braking a high speed spacecraft at the destination? Please let me now if you think this is conceiveable.
@isaacarthurSFIA6 жыл бұрын
You can't realistically slingshot a high speed projectile around a star, that only works if it's moving in the zone of that star's escape velocity, way under even 1% of light speed, and it's also speeding up as it approaches from that same gravity pulling it toward it.

I have to question if going faster is REALLY better. In 50-100 years we will effectively be immortal via genetic re-engineering. Within a couple hundred years will will be able to re-engineer our bodies to LIVE in space. If we travel at some percent the speed of light, then time dilation means we LOSE time relative to the rest of the universe. Effectively it is as though we were in hibernation even though we weren't - meanwhile the rest of the universe continued to learn and evolve. By the time we reach our destination we are like primitive amoeba compared to our counterparts left behind in Sol.
@isaacarthurSFIA6 жыл бұрын
Faster, in and of itself, is preferable, but a lot will depend on your specific culture and technology and mission as to what the optimal speed is. I generally tend to expect manned colony ships would stick to

Fair point Erik ... I guess for me it's purely technological FOMO. Also, though, if only travelling to a near neighbor then within a few light years, then it's maybe not a huge gap in time ... travelling between galaxies however would be a massive. Andromeda being 2,000,000 l.y. away - if you could maintain a .5 to 1G acceleration you'd severely time-dilate.
