Isaac Hayes did rap music in the 1970's and one of the first African Americans to win an academy award for his movie soundtrack for shaft. Very instrumental in paving way for future musicians like Barry white who became very successful and also wrote, produced and directed his orchestra and background singers.

Actually, the original singer was Dusty Springfield. She recorded the song in 1967... Dionne's version was recorded in 1969.
