You have an original V8 car but it's got the six cylinder bolt pattern. They did a lot of things in those days . I've heard if they needed to deliver a big order this kind of thing would happen if they ran out of the correct part they would substitute. Good old '60s right lol

Ike the 318 will work great in there should be easy bolt right in. And the transmission will bolt up too no problem You may need a different flex plate I'm not sure about the ring gear I would double check that closely other than that should be both in. Peace

This is my favorite model of the Barracuda. The bubble-back window, (just like a boat tail Riviera) defines the body lines of a nice muscle machine. The motor mounts should be the same, so, you shouldn't have any problems swapping engines. The transmission is a different story. Too many electronics involved. Go with a 727 Torque Flite. They are very strong and very reliable! Can't wait to see the videos. Have fun with it.

The best thing about Mopar is that guys love them and there are companies that make just about everything for them. Floor pans, fenders etc. I've seen cars that the only original thing on them is the VIN. That 318 would be great in there. Unless the trans is bad, keep it. If it's 4x4, get a 2wd tail and take off the transfer case.

@@Bama3728: I did a little research, and this is a total rethink of where I have a better grasp of it all. 360 heads on a 318 engine is a lot more doable. There won't be a lot of torque, but with 3.70 - 4.30:1 dif gears, 3800 RPM converter, double pumper carb not quite 780 CFM on a SP2P intake, and she'll move quite decently once she's wound up tight!

The small block mopars are great motors, simple, reliable, and easy to build up. You will probably have to put a little heavier rear end in it like an 8:25 or 8:75 unless you just planning on it being a light cruser. I have a 318 LA in my d150 truck. Its not the biggest power house, but it always starts and runs great. Id trust it to get me across the country.

I had one in the early 80's but life happened and I let it go. Pretty decent riding cars(someone had swapped a 318 into it). One of the actors in "The Wraith" is Ron Howard's brother. The Barracuda was an offshoot of the Valiant and IIRC (after 40 years) shared components with the Valiant. I'm not sure about the trans but a 318 should make it "Street Quick" and later a 34- or 360 bolts right in. Those rear windows are made of unobtainium.

5x4 is the small Mopar pattern which came on A-bodies with four wheel drum brakes. Used up until 1974, possibly 1975. And I'm sure you know that the driver's side of the car has left handed threads. You can use the later ball joints and install spindles from a Plymouth Volare/Dodge Aspen to get factory disc brakes. With the correct ball joints, those spindles bolt on to everything going back into themid-1950s. Can also be swapped side to side depending on if you want front or rear mounted calipers. B, E, F, M, and J all use the same spindle, and the swap kits that come with spindles, come with the B/E/etc. spindles; there is nothing special about them.

Love the reference to The Wraith. Another show that came to mind is Desert Auto Kings. I wasn't a fan of the seemingly scripted BS, but it was fun watching them "accidentally" break the "rare" back window. I see someone else commented that their friend spent a lot of time and money to find one, but I've seen others say they can't give them away. Anyway, my Dad has told me many times about the red one he had when he was young... Those boomers sure had it good back then.

I was 100% thinking you should toss a 318 magnum v8 in this thing if you can't get the motor unstuck. What you've got in your Durango will work, but you'll need a magnum carb intake, a magnum distributor, and can't recall specifically which transmission you'd need. The magnums have pretty close to the same block as the LA motor, but with better heads and roller camshafts. There are also a bunch of aftermarket stuff for magnums and you can make some serious power with them.

Didn't know Chrysler made a 273? Cool. Always been a fan of the 318. Very versatile. Had one in a Coronet that I put 60,000 miles on in roughly 2 years in the early eighties. Had a buddy who bought like a 73 Challenger with a balanced 318 and after a week he returned it (to another friend) because it was too much for him. You know what though? A slant 6 would be sweet, too. It will be fun seeing it come together.

15:51 That sounds like an excellent longblock donor, but I would highly suggest backdating it to carb and dizzy while you're doing the gaskets and freeze plugs just to make it more reliable and to make swapping it into this car much easier. It would be an absolute electrical nightmare trying to retaine the EFI on that engin while swapping it into this pre-EFI car. A nice 550cfm Holley vac-secondary 4bbl and a Mallory distributor will have it singin' a sweet song much much easier. While you're in there doing gaskets, might as well do a cam upgrade, new timing set. A 268 or 272 cam would be pretty sweet in a muscle car 318. Transmission...yeet that torqueflite onto marketplace alongside the shifter and put a manual in its place. Automatics suck lol.

As for the engine, if what is in it is the correct factory motor, I would say, save it. It's a rare car, and you have a title!! Some cars are just meant to be restored, and that's one of them. I'm pretty sure I won't be alive to see how it goes, but I'm glad you have it. See you later.

Chrysler cars had two different size holes in the rear of the crank for the torque converter hub. Up to about 1967 or 1968 they had a smaller hub on the torque converter. If you plan on using the original tranny and a later engine with the larger torque converter hub hole in the rear of the crank, then you will need to find a aftermarket bushing to install the rear of the crank in later engine to properly support the early torque converter. Small hub 904 and large hub torque converters due not interchange. Check your flex plates also. That 273 engine still has the original cast iron water pump. Valuable to collectors. Later engines all have aluminum water pumps. Many big block Chrysler engines do not have the crankshaft drilled for a pilot bushing, they are automatic tranny engines only. That 273 left exhaust manifold is special also. For Valiant and Darts only. It curves around the steering box.

A good R/B engine combo might be a 400B truck engine with a 440 Source 440 stroker crank with main journals diameter cut and heat treatment bumping the 400B to 512 CI; they might be going for around $3000 or so 'tho! If you try it, maybe or maybe not a 413 Cross Ram intake might work 'tho I'm probably failing to realize that the length of runner tubing might be wider than the fenders. I've always wanted to try it but I never had a 400 B engine to try it on.

You should invest in a boroscope. I got one for $104 from vevor that the end can turn 180° one way or the other. You can go down a spark plug hole turn the camera and see the valves. You can also go inside the oil filler hole and look and the rockers. It would make your life so much easier. Only bad side is the camera cable is a little noodlely and not rigid enough and if your watching the piston come up can get caught and squished because the cable can move wile the engine turns over.

The Plymouth Barracuda isn't my favorite A body, but, it's going to be a cool movie tribute car. Can't believe you almost hurt the Chevette!

Trying to finish watching the video before just geeking out on this little Barracuda so much like mine too cool seeing all the small changes to it from 65 to 66 is fun to spot and I will have to watch this build as it comes. please forgive the wall of Mopar geeking out. The 318 5.2 like the 5.9 360 should still have the classic car motor mount tabs on the sides (but the 5.9 is a larger mount one side) so the engine should just Drop in to the factory mounts 5.2 magnum 318 will have a sensor to read something back there and there is a notch cut out of the trans bellhousing for it iirc you might have to get an aftermarket flex plate to connect the crankshaft to the torque converter and one bolt will be offset from the other three, the transmission bellhousing is the same but the old 66 may still have the Ball and Trunnion driveshaft *look at Dylan Mccool's 65 Dart it will look a bit like a CV axle front driveshaft the 7 1/4 rear axles are a bit fragile mine is like on it's first 8 3/4 after breaking probably 6 7 1/4 rear ends and an 8 3/4 is a good thing to keep an eye out even if you have to get someone to cut one down to fit the A body though the A body ones do pop up for reasonable so if you see one for cheap try for it even if open diff the factory power steering boxes are sometimes overboosted so if you can find a manual box it will simplify things but the column to gearbox is a little different sometimes but is should almost lego together also of you keep the factory transmission you can push start the car like a manual it should have a rear transmission oil pump the wraith is a fun little watch and this should be a fun little car
