So what specifically do you think was rigged? Do you think the players were instructed to do what they did and the ref instructed to not call the penalty in the moment? Something that obvious would be the dumbest thing to use to rig a game. If they're going to rig a game it will happen by a bunch of ticky-tack calls and no-calls, bad ball spotting, etc throughout the game, not a crazy play at the end of the game. That was just a horribly missed call, I'm not sure why every casual thinks it was rigged.

@@DanielJamesEgan The video was about plays that make it feel rigged, not saying it is rigged. Remember, we're putting on our symbolic tin foil hats here. With that concept in mind, keeping in mind I am not actually explaining reality but rather conspiracy IF they did do it ("I'm not guilty, your honor...but IF I were guilty, here's how I'd do it..."): 1) If you were gonna rig an NFL game, you'd use the refs. Let's be real here, you're not gonna get all the players in on it. That's too much of a liability. Entrust a brand secret with a bunch of 20 somethings?! Nah. You'd wanna go with the more mature refs. They're not superstars in the limelight, and have no skin in the game. 2) Since we are clear that the rigging would be via the refs, then you have to consider they don't have to fudge the numbers if the team that is "supposed" to win is winning (consider also, that a team could keep it comeptitive despite little here and there fudging). The Saints were on a winning drive at the end of the game. Oops. Somethings gotta give. Gotta get the Rams fans interested after the move (once again consider this is all hypothetical conspiracy theory stuff, not saying this IS the case). 3) It is not just a missed call. The cameras show a ref looking directly at it. It wasn't missed: it was ignored (once again, keep in mind this is conspiracy theory talk!). One of the things about refs is that they aren't really punished too much when they make these huge "mistakes". Ref who missed the no call has since ref'd the Super Bowl. The ref who missed the Lions player who indicated he was eligible was "punished" by...not ref'ing the Playoffs...how many people wish they were "punished" by not having to do overtime? So, you see, it's not real punishment because they're just doing what they're supposed to be doing! I hate to keep repeating this but this is with a symbolic tin foil hat on. In reality, such argument as I have made relies on imputing motive etc.

Everyone is missing the point. It isn't outright rigged, they tilt the table to favor a team. The nfl game is all about momentum, killing a drive with a bad call or a no call has a drastic effect on the outcome of games. Also the league is an entertainment industry, they have complete control, and ultimately they decide who they deem the best match up for a superbowl. It doesn't always happen, it's not outright rigged, but you are fucking blind if you think Goodell and this 163 billion dollar league doesn't pull some strings.

So far here’s what I have. - If you defeat the 49ers AND they score exactly 17 points against you, your quarterback will suffer a season ending injury. - If you lose to Kirk Cousins, you will not win the Super Bowl that same year. - If you are an NFC team and you defeat the Chiefs in the regular season, then if you make it to the playoffs the 49ers will defeat you in any of the three rounds.

One thing that adds to the conspiracies with the NFL is how subjective the rules are. Its often said and generally agreed upon that certain infractions like holding and pass interference can be called "every play". So when those kinds of calls are heavily skewed in favor of one team, it will always cast doubt upon the legitimacy of the officials and their integrity. Another factor is that for most of the history of the NFL, penalties are essentially non-reviewable. If a very bad call happens at the end of the game that changes the nature of outcome, well... tough tiddies. Those games are going to be looked upon critically right or wrong.

The problem with discussing this is that a lot of people conflate "rigging" with "scripted." The NFL is not "scripted" in the sense that every single person involved is "in on it" and playing their part. "Rigged" is a better term because a simple penalty call (or non-call), or a head-scratching coaching or player decision, can go a long way in steering a game towards an outcome more favorable to the league's bottom line. So I believe, the ones almost always "in on it" are the refs, and SOMETIMES a coach or player can be involved as well. An example of each: Ref call - SB 57: After not calling holding all game, suddenly there's a holding call on the Eagles, stopping their drive downfield and allowing the Chiefs to run out the clock and kick the game winning FG. Non-call - 2018 NFCCG: The most blatant case of the Rams committing DPI goes uncalled even though everyone watching in the stadium and on TV saw it happen. Rams advance to the SB (because, I believe, an aging Brady might've lost to the Saints). Coaching decision - SB 49: Despite having one of the greatest RBs in the game, Pete Caroll elects to call a pass at the 2-yd line, leading to a Seahawks pick and handing the victory to the Patriots. Player decision - SB 50: Cam Newton just doesn't dive for the ball when he fumbles, he kind of just stares at it.

Some of the writings that go into detail about rigging allegations make note of the prominence of the team owners and/or media markets and their role in helping the NFL's market share. Robert Kraft apparently negotiated very lucrative broadcast contracts for the league in the early 00s, and so the conclusion is that many of those Lombardi trophies were *awarded* to the Patriots rather than *earned.*

I think refs aren’t paid or focused on enough which results in regular season bad or terrible calls. In the playoffs I think they tend to call games to keep it closer, but not necessarily in favor of one team. I think they just tend to make calls in favor of the losing team the later it gets. But I don’t think players or refs in the biggest league in the world would ever rig games. I think the Pete decision was more based on Pete and marshawns beef so Pete wanted to prove it was him winning by purposely not running it w him. I just find it very hard to believe any player or couch would take money over legacy

I don't know about 'rigged', but I've always had a gut instinct around sports (even in games I was playing). When the Leafs were up 4-1 against Boston in 2013 I called them losing the game. They didn't disappoint. I called Brady coming back against Atlanta (because he only needed 3 touchdowns/simple math) and winning the Super Bowl with the Bucs before the season started because that was the perfect narrative. I didn't watch the most watched Super Bowl because it was obvious KC was going to win. There are various observations that precede such predictions, but it's mostly because I'm not a betting man. I'm sure if I'd bet on KC, San Fran would have hoisted the trophy.

Yeah it was the worst superbowl and postseason I've witnessed. It was also the most watched and talked about. If they're going to rig things, the goal would be to cater to a wider audience and make more money, not cater to existing fans. They want more people watching ads and betting. Heck, they probably wouldn't even mind the rumors of rigging if it encourages people to bet using their "insight" to gain an advantage. Like most things, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. It's not completely rigged and scripted, but it's going to be influenced as much as possible by those in a position to do so.

The Buccs Chiefs SB was indeed rigged. It had nothing to do with the Chiefs O-Line being injured. Prior to that game, the most penalty yards called against the Chiefs defense all year was 51. They were called for an average of about 25 yards, and in the previous game they won against the Buccs in Tampa, they were called for 27 yards of penalties. This wasn't the best defense in the league, but it was a disciplined Spags defense that 1. was healthy and 2. had experience both in the SB and against this Tampa team. Again, 51 yards of penalties against the defense in their most-penalized game. Not 60. Not 70. 51. Then, in SB 55, they were called for 82 yards... BEFORE HALFTIME!! Tom Brady scored 3 first half touchdowns because: 1. He got SIX first downs from flags. This is a crazy stat for any game period, but this happened *before halftime* 2. He threw an interception and it was magicked into a first down for him. 3. He had a touchdown drive where he was whisked all the way down the field and placed at the 1 yard line without completing a pass. In total, the Chiefs were called for 95 yards of penalties in the first half which set a SB record. The Buccs were called for one 5 yard false start penalty. One team was allowed to pull receivers like Hill and Kelce to the ground with no penalty, and the other team wasn't allowed to play defense at all. People are still screeching about literally ONE call Mahomes got against the Eagles while ignoring that Brady played this game with bumpers up.

Do I think Super Bowl 42, the fateful game where the Pats record-shattering offense and perfect season being stifled in heartbreking fashion by the lowly Giants, was rigged to culminate a perfect underdog David vs. Goliath moment? HELL NO! The Pats lost that game due to the O-line's failure to protect Brady, Brady's failure to see and connect on short open throws instead of taking long shots, the coaches' failure to make the right adjustments, Belichick's failure of allowing the offense to try and convert on a f**king 4TH AND 13 instead of attempting a field goal, and the defense's failure to put the game away with ALL the chances they had on that dreadful drive. I say this even with the knowledge that Richard Seymour's neck was getting crushed by the Giant's center on the helmet catch play and the officials somehow missed it.

I don’t think the NFL is rigged, but it is clear, when a storyline develops that is profitable, refs generally give them more leeway, call less penalties against them, etc., which would be a way to avoid any obvious fixing but also improving the odds of getting the profitable teams further in the playoffs. To me, it is far too convenient that the storylines that makes the NFL the most money just somehow always occurs, and we’re supposed to believe it’s all by happenstance?

We know that, its common sense. I first learned of soccer fixing in 1979 as a teen (Paolo Rossi, Italian superstar)... Ofc NFL is not immun to match fixing. Plus I am pretty sure they (NFL) fix games themselves to keep games tight and "entertaining" (yawn to every "prevent defense", it bores me), mock Al Davis in his grave, etc... But in some weird way, naive fanbois think the NFL is full of integrity, because they (NFL, gambling partners, the mob, players) dont need to gain extra dollars. They dont "need" to cheat... That thinking is beyond me. All of them are for the extra gain. They pump themselves with drugs, risk their health, ofc the likes of (for example) Lamar Jackson dont want to sign for less than 250 mill, cos uhuhu, Watson makes 255. Its never enough for any of them. Even if it would take them, their families, and the whole city they live in 500 years to spent it all. @@PhantomDetectivesLLC

Players, coaches, and organizations want to win. If players were told to rig stuff they'd call it out. But there's no way that the NFL doesn't use the refs to influence games to reach certain preferred outcomes, ie. the chiefs getting away with several BLATANT DPIs against Baltimore and the refs overall refusal to call an offensive hold on KC in the AFCCG and the SB.

There was a playoff game in the late ‘90s where the grounds crew used a snowplow to clear off the spot where the ball would be put on the ground for a game-winning field goal by the home team. That’s illegal but the refs let it happen. That team was, of course, the Cheatriots.

I’ve Lost count how many times The Cowboys have been screwed by the NFL in very important games. Conveniently timed holding calls on game-winning touchdowns, defenses on opposing teams, not getting called for passenger interference, or defensive holding, penalties that are almost never heard of because no one knows about them, yet happened two or three times to the Cowboys. The Dez Catch. I’ve Pretty much given up on watching the NFL at all, because I know damn well Roger Goodell will never let the Cowboys win another Super Bowl because of his childish, spats with Jerry Jones. Jones won’t profit share so the Cowboys will never win the Super Bowl again. Jones tried to block Goodell’s contract extension so the Cowboys will never win the Super Bowl again. Before Goodell, if the Cowboys won, it felt legitimate, and if they lost, we accepted it, because it also felt legitimate. But there’s no way having this many different players, specifically quarterbacks, and this many different coaches, that the league is not somewhat rigged against the Dallas Cowboys.

Truthfully, I don't believe anything is scripted or rigged, but refs in the NFL have too much power. In college, where there are a SHIT LOAD more games, there is always an external crew that can stop and review the previous play for possible penalties or to review the call on the field. In the NFL, coaches have max 3 challenges, and there is no booth to review each play despite there being less games and the NFL being rich enough to have that to hold refs accountable. I think the NFL and the owners like the biased refs who make questionable calls because it creates drama and engagement outside of the game, which only further spreads the league. I hate how one sided games can feel in the penalty department, or people saying teams like the Chiefs always get every call (mfw they have the most penalized offensive and defensive players in the league), and how there's no way to challenge penalties. Even for that season after the blatant no call in the NFC championship on the Rams DB, the refs rarely, if at all, reversed a DPI call because they didn't want to be challenged.
