Or sometimes a coach thinks they need 1 player and just yells out he needs a body on the field. Regardless it’s poor planning and organization but it’s not hard to understand how it happened 😂😂

I have never followed a kicker till this guy showed up out of nowhere . What a story pretty awesome. Kicking his way to a bigger payday. He will be a fan favorite wherever he plays just because nothing was handed to him, he earned all of it so far. Oh he's playing right where he's at...in Michigan. As an Ann Arbor resident I cant wait for my home team Lion's sign him. Long fg's were our Achilles heel last season and why we didn't make the Superbowl...Bates will be kicking in July in Allen Park. So his season ends in June and he has no off time to get in his head, he goes right to training camp.

I was there at that game, was my first UFL game I've ever been to and the energy in the air when Bates was coming up to kick was electric every time without fail. The kicker scored 15 of their 28 points and won the game for the Panthers. I am very excited about the Lions potentially picking him up, the man is a beast.

I saw Szmytz from Syracuse, with a 60 yarder last week with the Battlehawks. McCrane has been also been very good. If not for Bates, McCrane would be the top kicker prospect from the UFL.

This is super cool. When I was a kid playing football (in Vancouver, BC) I was the kicker and punter, on top of my linebacker duty's, and I hit a fifty yard field goal when I was sixteen, and my punts were a solid forty five-fifty five yard range. It's nice seeing a kicker getting some attention.

Exactly. I hope he gets to the NFL and tears it up, but kids that can hit from insane distances in practice or similar conditions aren't particularly rare. My school had one a few years back, but we never saw it in games. There's a reason that this kid wasn't already well-known from his success in college. Additionally, there's the issue of lack of long-distance FG attempts in the NFL; if you miss, the opposing team has the ball in great position and, with the quality of players there, will probably score easily. The UFL will do things that the NFL would not for entertainment value; the fans aren't as invested in whether teams win or lose but want to see an entertaining product, and something like this fits that bill very well.

Cleveland browns had a kicker do a 73 yarder when i was little. He wasn’t the punter but the kicker. Not sure if the 73 yards included the distance from the end zone to the goalpost. I don’t remember.

When I see young men like this. All I see, when he was 10 years old, he walked 6 blocks to the High School football field, and with his ONE football, practiced until he was called home for supper. THAT is how you get good at ANYTHING… Practice, Practice, then when you are so tired you can't stand up, you PRACTICE for another hour. You do this because 99.9% of people will give up, after the first two hours of practice, you stick out that last hour, and you WILL be better, stronger, faster.

Looks a lot like another guy that made the big time: Brandon Aubrey. He came out of nowhere(relative obscurity with a soccer background at that)and was arguably the best thing about the Cowboys last season. I'm a Razorback fan too but Bates was "just a kickoff specialist" at Fayetteville. Interesting. I can almost guarantee you Bates would be on the Cowboys speed dial if they didn't already have Aubrey. He will be in the NFL soon.

This is why developmental leagues are important. Brandon Aubrey was the best kicker in the NFL last season and he came from the USFL. Wouldn’t have gotten a shot without that. Jake Bates seems on a similar trajectory.

As an Ann Arbor resident and 40 year Lions fan ( im 45) our Achilles heel last season what is the field goal kicker and why we didnt advance to the Superbowl. Jake will not leave Michigan,his season ends in June and Training canp starts in July in Allen Park, a 40 min drive from Ford Field. Book it him and Jake Fox will ne the beat kicing dup in the league next year. Plus our other weak point the secondary being fixed the Lions are the team to beat in the NFC.

Bates is a really good kicker and he has a huge leg. The only reason he was relegated to kickoff duties at Arkansas was because he was behind Cam Little (just drafted this year), who was Freshman ALL-SEC/ALL-AA the year before. Even as a kickoff specialist he was a huge asset. The only time we didn't have a touchback is when the coaches wanted him to kick it short--otherwise it went through the back of the EZ. Glad to see him showing off his place kicking abilities in a game situation.

As a Bills fan, seeing 12 men on the field during a field goal attempt gives me chills. I am very happy for Jake to get his chance in the NFL. But, who is the better Spring kicker; Bates or Aubrey???
