The Lions lost their 17 point lead in break neck fashion and it was so gut wrenching to watch, so here's my whole synopsis of it.

Sometimes it feels like people don't watch film at all. Here is a detail you miss if you haven't watched the film from the game: The "overthrown ball" to BA that was nearly a pick was VERY clear pass interference much ealier in the play. He was bumped off his route about 20 yards down the field and shoved backwards....this was not an overthrown ball, it was clear pass interference.

The contact down field is fine by me, but if the wr moved backwards (by force from a defender) then that's a penalty. However, that ball should've been caught by the wr regardless. It hit him IN THE FACE! 😂 Being pushed at any time other than during the attempt doesn't excuse that missed opportunity. That play was bad execution from the defender, the wr and the refs. Did the foul happen before the attempted catch, or during the attempt? This is an important distinction because: if it was during the route and not the attempt, then there is not excuse not to catch a ball that hits you in the FACE! 😂 He would've had plenty of time to adjust during the catch, and wouldn't've been hit in the FACE. If it happened during the attempted catch, then that changes everything. He could've been ready to catch the ball perfectly, but was moved (in mid air) and couldn't adjust in time.

The best coaches adapt. They don't just stick with "what got them there" mentality when there is no tomorrow. Campbell cost them the game with his low IQ, gung-ho, all or nothing coaching style in the 2nd half. You do not leave points on the board against an elite team. You do that during the regular season when you have time to take these chances. And because he was stubborn and made this foolish decisions he cost them the game.

@@Fbanz96 Are you really going to blame the coach for a play call when guys are dropping balls that hit them in the hands? That's literally about the execution. They choked, but that was on the players not the play calls. Maybe the coach could have done something to prepare them mentally better, but that's different than play calling. The Ravens, on the other hand, never even gave themselves a chance with suddenly trying to be a different team while simultaneously playing into the strength of the other team's defense. The Lions decisions are, at least, understandable, the Ravens aren't.

In 1957, the 49ers and Lions faced each other for the Championship and the 49ers had the half time lead. The story is that the Lions players heard the 49ers popping champaign bottles in the locker room next door or whatever at half time. Lions came out passed and energized to whoop on the 49ers. I knew that story from playing Madden 03 or whatever it was that had little factoids. I felt it happening for us when CJGJ started to wave to the crowd before half time. That helped me relax.

I watched the entire game…love the NFL and had no preference about who won. Maybe slightly Lions since they’ve never been to the SB, but no big deal. The turning point absolutely was the 4th down stop. Sf scored 3, then the Lions chewed some more time off the clock and had a decent opportunity to put 3 on the board negating SFs score. Yet….the Lions decided to go for it. It made no sense to me….especially in a league where big momentum and point shifts are common…much more common than blowouts, which is what the Lions were going for. That missed opportunity deflated them, and then the snowball just kept rolling. They absolutely could do nothing right after that. It was amazing to see. Moral of the story? As if we didn’t already know, a 17 point lead in the NFL at the beginning of the third quarter means very little. You take the points when you can take the points if you have a 17 point lead. A 20 point lead put SF further into the mental hole…who knows what would happen. Based on every miscue and every ball bouncing SFs way in the second half, it appeared that God himself didn’t want the Lions in the SB this year….again, an amazing spectacle.

Your D held them to 3 in the beginning of the 2nd half, they did their job, zero points would be ideal, but it's SF at home. Tharlt failed 4th down conv was the spark SF needed, team & crowd. I didn't have any idea the wheels would fall off the Lion's wagon as fast as they did, but I wasn't surprised. They had a superior team on the roaps, they had the crowd pretty much hushed, then they gave them the spark, that's all it takes.

This is easy to say from outside the fishbowl looking in, “They are a Team, They win as a Team, They loose as a Team. This is why the game is played. Was there dropped passes, missed tackles, bad play calling ( in our minds, because if they had succeeded in the play it would make the coach look like a genius), etc..My Steelers can loose to a 2 - 10 team turn around and tromp a 13 - 1 team the next week. I’m sorry the Lions came up short but it was a Team effort. It is very easy to sit in the arm chair and coach / quarterback but when you’re on the field it’s a whole lot different.

Make it and its back to a three score game and you tell the 49ers that you can match them score for score the rest of the way. Turn the ball over on downs and you create the opportunity for the 49ers to drive for a tocuhdown, which they did, and suddenly the three score lead you had half-time is a one score lead and the 49ers are back in it. Fortunately, they get to keep Ben Johnson so we don't have to worry about Goff turning back into a pumpkin anytime soon. I'll give Campbell some leeway because it was his first playoff trip and he won 2 playoff games, which already makes him the greatest Lions coach of all time :D But for petes sake get a kicker you trust to make a 45 yard fg. I know you wanna run more clock and score another TD but even a FG means you withstood the Niners first punch of the half and held serve for 8 mins. Playing with the lead in the second half, especially a 3-score lead, maintaining the lead is just as good as increasing the lead because the clock increasingly becomes a bigger factor.

They pissed it away just like the game in Chicago. This team does not play 60 minutes almost ever. They only average 4 points all season in the 3 quarter. Forget about who to draft or what free agent to bring in. These guys are good enough if they just could score in the 3 quarter. Maybe script the third quarter. The media ask Campbell about it mid season and he did not want to talk about it. Now it cost them a trip to the SB. The farther we get from the 49ers game the more pissed I am that they just blew it! Blame one game on the players but the coaches own this second half scoring problem. It might have something to why Ben Johnson is not a HC now.

I generally agree with what you have said. Then again, with a bit more luck, the Lions win this game fairly comfortably. They were clearly a better team from the get-go. The Niners were excellent after the break, but they enjoyed a fair bit of luck and took their chances every time in that second half. That's a very good team and good teams tend to do just that. The Lions will learn their lesson Im sure.

As a 49er fan I had the wind knocked out of my sails barely 1 minute into the game when the Lions made a TD on like their second play. But in my mind I knew the second half was going to be different, Purdy plays really well under pressure. I kept thinking they scored 3 times in the first half so we gotta score 3 times in the second half. Sure enough the 3rd quarter saw the Niners flip the switch and crank up the heat.

As a Niners fan, even I would admit that Campbell should have just went for field goals instead of going for it. Up 24-10, you gotta kick it when you're at the 28 yard line. Woulda been 27-10, lead and a 27-10 lead would have been a hard deficit to overcome. And down 27-24, why go for it when you're at the 30 and can tie the game and even it up a 27-27. If that happens, it's anyone's game. Lastly, if you are going for it, shoulda ran the ball with Montgomery or Gibbs. Look, I'm a Niners fan. But I respect the Lions so much for becoming a true contending team and Dan Campbell is a great coach. If the niners weren't in that game I would have rooted for Detroit. I would like to see Detroit win a Super Bowl if its not the niners.

how does a receiving corp catch nearly everything within 6' of them all season long and then start dropping balls thrown into their hands. Dan Campbell is NOT the scapegoat here. the receivers did not make catches. the front line did not stop the ball carriers. the secondary did not stop the ball carriers... either they got cocky (the defense was NOT a strong suit all season long) or the bookies got to them with their 7-1/2pt spread... no, Campbell was successful with that sort of play calling all season long and its NOT his fault. other than the team not being able to execute

Up 17 points? Ground attack, time management, & field position are your friends. Run the play clock to 2 seconds or less on every play. Stay inbounds on every play. Stopped on 3rd down, but out of FG range? *Punt.* Touchbacks are your friend when up three scores. No momentum switch via a good return. 80 yards to defend versus opponent taking over on their own 35-38 yard line after a missed 48y FG attempt or fake punt.

I was fine with the second 4th down call. A FG only ties the game on the road late in the 4th quarter. If you kick the FG, you need at minimum a stop to send the game into OT, and a stop and score to win the game in regulation. And that's if you make the non-gimme FG. You're already in Niner territory, and it's only 3 yards for a first down. At some point, you just have to rely on players to make 50/50 plays.

You play as a team, win as a team, and lose as a team. I am so tired of the people on other videos talking about going for it on 4th down. Maybe the first time, but not the 2nd. Lions have Badgley, not Prater or Hanson. Never a sure 3 there. That 52 yard feel bounce off the face mask could only happen in a Lions game. There were dropped passes, poorly thrown passes to open receivers, and the defense forgot how to tackle in the 2nd half. The same people who complained about not going for the field goals would want Campbell as coach of the year if they converted. Disappointing for Lions fans, but still farther than anyone thought they would go. Most people I know thought the Rams were going to win by 2 scores. It was a heartbreaking way to lose, but overall a great season.

I can hardly believe how many 49er fans are trying to argue that there was PI on that Brandon Aiyuk reception. There was no penalty called on the play at all. It was amazing awareness on his part to catch the deflection but just accept that was an insanely lucky bounce off the the defender's face mask that would never happen the same way twice instead of arguing there was PI... don't be ungracious winners. It's even worse than a sore loser.

It blows my mind why "analysts" would say that Purdy was going to throw a bad interception on that deep ball off the Lions helmet. Literally the DB pushed Aiyuk with the ball in the air slowing his momentum and giving the DB momentum backwards to the spot Purdy was throwing it, hence the yellow penalty flag on the field. Worse case scenario was the Niners getting the ball at the point of contact which was close to where he caught the ball, even if it was intercepted or dropped. Why does everything else that happened on the play prior to getting hit on the helmet with the ball gets ignored?????? DO better if this is what you want to do Isaac.

not sure why the BA catch keeps getting described as a failed interception. People, yourself included, need to go watch the footage. You will see that the reason the ref threw the flag was because the defender ran into BA the stopped his route running which lead to him being short of where the ball was. Had the Lions defender not have hit him he would have been right there, the pass was perfect. The refs didnt bother with the penalty since he caught it anyway.

The Ladybug Catch, or Immaculate Deflection, or whatever they’re gonna call it was preceded by pass interference. The defensive back is behind BA because he interfered with the receiver while the ball was in the air. It was an outstanding catch but even if he missed it the 49ers get the ball at the point of contact. The refs picked up the flag because BA caught the ball. Poor guy added insult to injury.

These guys as a team had never been on this stage. Were never SUPPOSED to be in this game. I think it gave the core of this team something that will come in handy down the road: EXPERIENCE OF THE MOMENT. Anybody talking about the calls just completely missed the failed execution of about 6 plays in crucial moments. Mental lapses. And whether they were due to the stage or not, I think it's something that will be more tight down the road.

Forget everything. The real issue is going for it on 4th when they could kick a field goal. So many teams have done this because 'the stats say it is worth it'. Burr why do the stats say that? Because in the past teams only used to go for it on 4th and inches or 4th and goal or when they needed a 1st down to stay in the game in the last two minutes of the game. Going for it on 4th and 2 in the 3rd or 2nd quarter is not the same at all. Your team doesn't feel its as important, and anyone can get 4th and inches on a qb sneak. Getting 4th and 2 from your rb who has to come from behind the qb giving the defense time to push the offensive line out of position is far more difficult.
