The generation that faced slavery is reducing, I mean many have died so it's a new generation that don't know anything about slavery in Africa except through school books. When someone approach you and tell you the great grandfather of that white girl or boy you are hanging out with has mistreated your great Father whom you have never seen, that's truth will have a mere impact than if it was your grandfather or your Father whom you really know. In fact, some not all black Americans till today they are still living that kind of life till today, that's why they have a different view. They are not getting chances or opportunities because of their skin color, while they believe that the country they live in, it's a country opened to all.
