The editing in this episode with the blackouts between Isak being asleep and waking up to see what Evan was doing throughout the night was just PURE GENIUS! It is his exact perspective and it perfectly makes the viewer feel the same utter confusion that he is feeling at that point. It’s such a simple but perfectly executed technique. You feel and relate to him on such an intense level.

Even says Sonja is ‘controlling’ and like a ‘babysitter.’ I think Even doesn’t feel like an equal to Sonja in their relationship, and instead feels like burden because of his bipolar disorder. Sonja basically dismisses Even’s sexuality as a side effect of mania, which is so horrible and invalidating. When Sonja says Isak is just a ‘sick idea’ Even has right now, it really speaks to stigma about being LGBT and having a mental illness. Even knows Sonja will not leave him, and he has convinced himself Sonja is the only person who will put up with his bipolar so they stay together. But Even has real feelings for Isak, and ultimately, lying to Isak has just hurt him… but tbf Isak did say he didn’t want ‘mentally ill people in his life’ so Even tried to mind over matter it and stop being mentally ill in order to be with Isak. Which yeah, can’t hide that forever buddy 💀

You guys didn't miss anything specific. Even is pansexual, and he's not coming to terms with his sexuality the way Isak is. He's liked boys before, which is something we learn more about in season 4. He's just dealing with being bipolar, and Isak is dealing with falling for a boy, coming out to his friends and family, and now worried that Even is manic and what that means for their future. It is a lot! But that's what makes this series so great.

Remember the scene when Isak and Even talked at the gym and Isak said he didnt want mentally ill people in his life since his mothers situation? And then Even tried to back off from him and kissed Sonya at the party.... well, now all makes sense Also when Isaak said "only you know how you feel" to Even and him saying "I never felt like this before" its important given that he is manic and sometimes devolop short obssessions over things. I feel like he was confused too over his feeling for Isaak at first and Sonya tried to push on him the fact that it was just an episode (like she said to Isaak at the end of the episode)

I think now that we know Even has bipolar disorder, it (as well as other things) explaines how Even suddenly became more distant after the lockeroom scene in episode 5 when Isak is talking about his mom and how he's "desided that his life is better without mentally ill people around him"

23:43 y'all are so right, the end of this episode really plays neurotypical standards against heteronormative standards. in sonja's mind, even's not well, and being with isak is an assumed reflection of that "nontypical behavior".

Minor detail, but one that many people miss: Twice in this episode Even references the movie Pretty Woman (the making breakfast scene and the marriage talk in the suite). So he isn't babbling quite as much as some people think he is.

“He is DEAD to me!” (30 seconds later) “…okay, he’s not dead.” Yeah, this was completely out of left field. It really takes the story (again) from where you think it’s going to go, to something much deeper than what you thought you were dealing with. And it brings up so, so many interesting conversations that society in general should have (and especially with next ep) and did have because of this. There are literally stories about people who, because of this story line in this Norway series and in some of the other ones, actually found out they were undiagnosed bipolar. Which is, SO amazing.

Love to see you both wearing snapbacks to watch Skam haha. Even being bipolar explains his behaviour until now, and his relationship with Sonja. It's not healthy at all, but she is the person that has been by his side since they were 15, probably experienced his diagnosis with him, and really knows him. That can make her a bit controlling, as we've seen. She thinks his love for Isak is just a symptom of another manic episode (in season 4 we understand why). Even has taken the risk to be with Isak in spite of his fears for change, and in spite of isak's comments about mentally ill people (episode 5, right before everything goes down). This is going to be really hard for Isak, but also for Even. They both have to deal with their own traumas and fight for their relationship. I think the show does a very good job at foreshadowing some of the most important points for the plot. When you watch it a second time you understand everything better. Also...I love that conversation with Sana. I love how in this show people make mistakes and learn from them, and apologize for them. That also proves you can have your own beliefs without disrespecting others'. Let's not forget is that conversation that gives Isak the strength to tell his mom about Even. I just love this show. Hope you're enjoying the journey. Loving these videos.🥰

Speaks volumes about just how dramatic and absolutely absorbing this episode was, in that I don't think I've ever seen Josh swear so much! Listen to the lyrics of the song playing as they get into the lift at the hotel. Also, I understand Sonja was upset and angry, but the gleeful look on her face as she essentially tore Isak's heart out and ate it, made me want to slap her in to the middle of season 4!

19:14 the continuous black screen is symbolic of a half-sleep Isak. he regained consciousness some time and fell asleep. also it gives the experience of being nervous, uncomfortable and curious about what actually happened to the audience like Isak felt in the scene. Just briliant Also if you're following along from season 1 I think Isak texting his parents is the most likely thing he would done. because his mother had a mental breakdown and his father left home. Isak chose to live alone so he had no contact with them.

I also disliked Druck. It removed one of the most integral parts of the Isak character's journey. The main topics of this season are sexuality and mental illness and removing one of them while still maintaining the Isak's character background is lazy writing imo. I am not against the other topic they choose instead but it feels like they did it only for the sake of being different.

I don't see anything strange about telling him he is bringing a boyfriend over text. 13:22 I think by text especially to his mother is perfect. It gives her time to process and think before answering and him not having to be faced with it. I think text can be the best in some situations.

I think isak asked sana about religion and homosexuality because he was worried about how his mom would react. sana's apology here gave him the courage to finally say the thing that was the reason he's been so distant with his parents. like, he doesn't live with his parents because of his parents' drama. but he hasn't been -talking- to them because (he's mad at them and) he's afraid to talk to them about this all-consuming thing that's been going on in his life. afraid they'll abandon him. again. and like others have said, he sees his parents so infrequently that waiting for the next time they see each other might be too long. and I think isak's internalized misogyny won't allow him to risk the vulnerability of coming out in person. just my interpretation. 🤷‍♂️✌️

The reason Isak specifies Even is a guy to his dad is because boyfriend/girlfriend is apparently the same word in Norwegian (something like "my beloved" I believe). So if he didn't want it to be ambiguous he needed to specify. He'd basically had close to zero contact with either parent besides getting rent from his dad so this was Isak deciding if he was going to deal with both parents at once again (after months apart) it was going to be as himself.

the term for a romantic partner like boyfriend/girlfriend in norwegian is "kjæreste". It's a gender neutral term:) I will say it's more correctly translated to "my dearest". "my beloved" translates to "min elskede" - which romantic partners normally might still say to each other, but not use refer to themselves as a couple (where they would say: we are "kjærester")

I LOVE your videos...i wait for them every single week!!🤩 I just wanted to say this without giving a spoiler. The director herself didnt mean to connect mental illness with sexuality. Even, the person that is manic here, is already in terms with his sexuality. The issue about the last scene is that Sonja has a prejudice about manic people that they cant control their own emotions/feelings because of it. She is basically calling him crazy for starting a relationship with Isak, saying is not real, thats where her controlling part stars bc she doesnt know at all what Even is feeling and yet she is speaking for him, telling Isak that Even doesnt have feelings for him. Anyways, the main motive here is to show this misconception that people have over bipolar people, thinking they cant control their life, emotions, feelings.

This season really comes full circle for Isak's character with regards not only hus sexuality but also mental illness. You haven't seen the first seasons yet but the whole reason Isak lives at the flat with Eskild and Linn is because he didn't want to deal with his mother's mental issues. After his father left them, she had a breakdown but it is implied she was never really fully mentally stable. The mental illness storyline is as integral to Isak's charater and storyline as his sexuality. This is the main reason I don't really like one remake that changes this. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I've always felt that Sonja gets a bad rap. Imagine your boyfriend is cheating on you...and then the person he's cheating with calls you in the middle of the night to come rescue them. Any of us would be furious. Then there's Emma...so many SKAM fans hate on her, as though Isak didn't lie to her and mislead her TWICE... Then there's Eva....who Isak totally betrayed in Season one; he turned her life upside down, and just walked away from the mess. I'm a gay man myself, and I think the bigger story here is that being in the closet causes us to be very manipulative and "snake-ish". I just wish SKAM could have covered that more, because too many fans overlook that and simply hate on the girls around "Evak" because evak is "so cute" and therefor anyone against them must be the enemy.

Some of what you missed from previous season setting up Isak's season was in Season 1, the main character was Eva who was dating Jonas (the best friend who was so cool when he came out) but Isak had a crush on Jonas and helped sabotage their already messy relationship, we hear small bits about Isak having trouble at home, his mother is mentally ill and his father abandons them. In S2, Noora was the main and living with Eskild and Linn, we don't see much of Isak but there are small hints, his mother's health is declining and he's living alone with her and frequently looking for places to crash when he can't be safe or comfortable at home. At the very end od S2, we find out he was invited by Eskild to sneak into their basement to sleep when he has nowhere to go. When Noora moves out with her boyfriend in London, Isak takes her place. I hear it's not uncommon for teenagers to move out of their homes and stay in apartments, they can apply to specific public schools that have better classes to offer in specific fields, Sana, for instance chose this school for the science classes. she actually lives further away, near the school Even originally went to, and some students move to apartments that are closer to their school of choice. Even chose to move to this school for reasons you find out about S4 which is Sana's season.

i came out to my parents via email while i was countries away... it was very much a coping mechanism because i thought they might freak out and i didnt want to be confronted with that without the safety of having the time to choose your replies very carefully. so i always thought it made sense for isak, given his history with his parents.

Sana is great. Looking forward to her season next, as I haven't seen it yet. They have great moments together with Isak I liked the build-up to Even's secret. You get so many red flags and start to wonder what's going on, until it escalates.

You really have to watch it again after this for yourself 😂 just to see al the signs. This show is so so good! Everyone already pointed out the locker scene so I'm just gonna say I love the Sanna scene ❤ their bond is so cute, it gets better in season 4. And the acting of the actor playing Even is so freaking good in this ❤ For me it was very interesting what you said about the sex scenes and being not very real. For me it always felt a bit sexy but also awkward very much teen. In the French version its way more intense but also less real for me. (But damn so sexy) I think the Belgian version has a more real shower scene. They even waited with filming that scene because one of them wasn't 18 yet 😂 but also it's not only about representation around homosexuality but also mental health ❤ I loved your faces in the hotel scene btw 😂😂 it's such a rollercoaster

I’m pushing for Druck next, however in Skam France the sexual representation is well done - cinematically, the passion, it’s beautiful!

Yes, I think Sonja is engaging in what so many straight people do when confronted with the fact that the person they love is gay. They want to explain it away, call it a phase, and Sonja is using Even's mania as her explanation for his turning away from her to Isak, and like so many confrontations over this, she is weaponizing her flimsy theory to hurt and drive Isak away. She also has the arrogance to think that only she can love Even as he needs to be loved, to love him with full knowledge of his mental illness while Isak is naive and ignorant and will probably not have the fortitude to manage a relationship with Even. She may even think that Isak isn't good for Even, that he could harm Even through his inexperience. On a certain level, though she is too cruel, a high school puppy love probably can't manage this.

Forgive me if this was already mentioned. Regarding the representation of sex, it’s not just that they play high school kids, the actor who plays Isak was a high school kid when this was filmed. He was a student at Nissen, the school where they shot the show.

Yeah, Skam Belgium which is called WTfock and Skam France depicts the sex scenes more explicitly than OG skam. So there are adaptations that...do it "better" or in a way y'all might enjoy more. I agree with y'all vague sex scenes that shy away from the intricacies aren't...amazing sex rep, IMO. And i feel the same away about super vague "softcore" hetro sex scenes as well.

I really sympathize with Sonja here. She's been with Even for years, she saw him finding interest in many new things and then completely losing interest some time after. I can understand why she would be like "oh what now? 😩" when Even suddenly decides he loves a boy he met last month.

Don’t believe there is a gender associated with the word for girlfriend/boyfriend in Norwegian which is why he had to clarify that he is dating a boy.

I think Isak is just being cocky, like we have seen in many text messages. Even is definitely a boy`s name in Norway!
@amyseaden9069
@amyseaden9069 Жыл бұрын
@@rbosole5361 There is probably an element of wanting to make it clear that he is dating a boy but there are many women who now have names that have been typically associated with boys (like James, Charlie, etc.) so Even could be a girl. If I understand correctly in Norwegian he is saying he has a romantic partner not a boyfriend or girlfriend so it would would make more sense to point out that Even is a boy versus in English saying that I have a boyfriend and Even is a boy’s name doesn’t make sense. Don’t think the translation’s on Skam’s are professionally done so there are some translation error here and there. Think in general Nordic languages don’t differentiate sex as much as in English.

the way i love skam for putting out two powerful & social points in this series and fuse them. is just so hard to treat these kind of themes, first the sexuality of 1 or 2 characters that obviously don't show up the same way. 2nd, a mental illness is a hard spot to treat. you gotta be careful with all the stuff you're showing and they do it perfectly. Lovely reaction guys, greetings from a queer // neurodivergent person

dude I was literally thinking the same thing when I was watching this episode for the first time. I really thought Even was going to kill Isak or something and that Sonja wanted to warn Isak he tried something like this in the past and then I thought he was maybe on drugs, always going back and forth between the two. I mean the way the tension was build with Even acting progressively strange and kinda creepy, later with his very irritating and out of context monologue and all this talking about death and the way the screen always cut to black I really thought something even more terrible was going to happen👀

I see some votes for SKAM Druck, if you choose to watch another version based on the OG, Norway. But I vote for SKAM France Season 3 next, if you can find it. Talk about "all the feels"; SKAM France delivers those in spades.

I dont think that Sonja is homofobic per se - she is just lashing out because the fact that Even is gay makes him off limits to her. She is in denial about Even and that their relationsship has come to an end. She is though totally out of line with what she is saying and how she blames Isak- ' cause he is blindsinded about Evens mental health issues. Its not his fault that Even have not been up front with him and that he is now out at the deep end.
