This map is amazingly accurate, i have been to Isandlwana twice and it actually gives you chills knowing the amount of people that have died, i have had the honor of finding a bullet casing in the grass and still have it to this day in a display case.It truly was ana amazing battle and just some of South Africa's incredible history!

South Africa’s.. ‘incredible’ history..? As a Brit.. the British empire was quite ruthless. And.. very harsh on people / countries. Sadly the Zulu Kingdom was one of the ones literally to be eaten alive by the British.

Gee, I guess the British high command had a lot in common with General George Armstrong Custer just about the same time give or take about 3 years. 1 - underestimating enemy strength and abilities, 2 - no reconnaissance, 3 - overconfidence, 4 - split your forces, 5 - arrogance.

Poor tactics as well, British lines during the canal battle were spread out way too thin when they Shide been more concentrated, especially when you think about how a much smaller engineer regiment at routes drift of only 100 men later survived.

Also I would love WHERE any unit with rifles or muskets would slowly or quickly walk back and shoot at the same time. Good video. Keep the work up lad.

the martini henry rifle came in for british army use in 1871 and replaced the short term snider enfield. They were a bloody good weapon and I own 3 martini henry's and love them. they are a beautiful rifle and feel good to shoot. The 22.5 inch lunger bayonet is also a great piece of kit. the Zulus were actually more afraid of the bayonet than the bullets which is crazy. The natal native contingent didn't contain many Zulu deserters. it was more from tribes from other areas.

I would recommend How Man Can Die Better by Lt Col Mike Snook, which is a phenomenal definitive history of the battle. Which dispels a.lot of the myths around it. Certainly in the sim you have here Durnford has redeemed himself because Snook concludes that whilst Chelmsford set up the disaster by splitting his force, Durnford's actions on the day guaranteed defeat. He outranked Pullane and was the senior office on field. His was a catastrophic tactical and leadership failure. Burt Lancaster and Ealing Studios did a very good job of painting him as the hero he believed he was.

There was other things as well. The British commander of the 1800 soldiers at Isandlwana attempted to hold a much larger perimeter. Also each British soldier only carried about 70 - 80 rounds for their Martini Henry and weren't able to get resupplied especially during the chaos of the battle.

its funny to note that in an authentic recreation, the british army is now proven to have been in the start of the battle in skirmish order with 6 feet between each man. They withdrew as soon as they realised they were beginning to loose troops. Durnford died in action at the battle of issandlwana. The fact with the british army that cannot be replicated is that the martini's in the game are firing far less than the Martini henry can fire. When re-enacting this war, my friend could achieve 18 rounds a minute when he wanted to. Live rounds 15. myself was 16 blanks a minute and 13 a minute live. its hard work but can be done.

Not only that but many of the soldiers at the battle ran out of ammo. Standard I believe at the time was 60 rounds per soldier they were positioned so far out they really had no real way of getting resupplied with ammunition in time with the sheer amount attacking them. Rorke's Drift which happened on the same day, showed just how effective the Henry-Martini was when the British were dug in at a fairly well fortified stronghold with spare ammunition close at hand.

They aren't 'regiments.' The individual formations are Company units- consisting of 100 + men. 3 platoons of 30 men to a Coy, + a Coy HQ element. There were approximately 1,500 men at Islandwana- 800 off regular soldiers of the 24th Foot Regt- Royal Warwickshire Regt, and the remainder were Colonial and Native contingent troops. Approximately 25,000 Zulu's attacked the position.

This is somewhat less than historically accurate. Only 1 in 10 men in the NNC was given a rifle with four rounds. The rest fought with their short spears and hide shields. Not a critique of your play, but of the mod itself. If you would like to read about it "Zulu War 1879" by Ian Knight and Ian Castle is great.
@Marmocet

You might have better luck in this battle if you redeploy your troops using that rocky formation as an anchor for one of your flanks and build a firing line with some depth using the artillery as secondary anchoring points. You also want to make sure you concentrate firepower somewhere so you crush part of their line. Some better firing discipline might also even up the odds there. Let the Zulus get pretty close before you open up on them, and then tear big holes in their lines with concentrated firepower and artillery. The shock of seeing everyone around you drop in the space of a few seconds can be enough to induce a rout, and if you follow it up quickly with a cavalry charge, there's a chance it could spread through the rest of the army.
@keithwhisman
@keithwhisman 5 жыл бұрын
British army should’ve used the hills as a defensive position making the Zulu number advantage much smaller. The Zulus were very much underestimated. This battle happened because an Englishman was sent to try to make a deal with the Zulu king and de-escalate what was going on between the Boers and the Zulus. That man on his own personal authority overstepped his authority made an ultimatum to the Zulu king to honor an agreement over a deed of land to the boars.. the British on the ground decided to make war and although the battle of Islwanda was lost the war was won by the Brits. Very sad, it was a great loss to South Africa. The King had proved to be very civil. A war that didn’t have to happen.

Durnford did indeed die on the battlefield,and when Lord Chelmsford met with Queen Victoria and her Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli back in the UK he blamed the defeat on Durnford. Victoria then instructed Disraeli that Chelmsford was not to be blamed for the defeat because she knew he came from a good family.

Do you have the tactical option of forming infantry squares? If so, next time you play the scenario, have the infantry form square to maximise their firepower by concentration. That's what Pulleine ought to have done in the actual battle- form square around the ammunition wagons and use volley fire relentlessly against the Zulu. In reality, the British were spread to thin and over too large an area.

the henry martini [ the british rifle] jammed after about 6 because of the heat in generated in the chamber. @gopr3117
@gopr3117 8 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I agree with that analysis. While the Henry martinis did get a small rep for jamming it was definitely not as so bad it would jam every six rounds and or compromise an army in battle. Actually the British held off the Zulus for a reasonable amount of time especially in the centre. The battle started around 11am and was more or less over by 4pm. They most likely would have been able to hold the Zulus there if not for the withdrawal of the right flank whose rate of fire started to slacken due to ammo shortages. And although many have speculated that the British perimeter (alongside being too far from the camp) was perhaps not concentrated enough, I've certainly never heard of a mid 19th century European army forming up in 6 deep lines!? That's utter drivel. That would be an unworkable formation. The British fought in 2 ranks since the introduction of the breach loading rifle. Positioning the companies closer together (or having some in reserve) is how you concentrate a line

Chelmsford was several miles away during the battle Why didn't they form a tight square with the ammo in the middle?

This happens when you underestimate your enemy ! Chelmsford was arogant and ignorant.

The fuck is with the British and underestimating then losing because they underestimated.
@MilaLili1

The British also underestimated the Americans in the war of 1812 an lost, suffering devastating defeats in New Orleans, Baltimore, and Lake Erie. But I guess that you could say because of the American Defeat in Canada, D.C. was lost and burnt.

I was just making a stupid joke anyways, I should've said "empires" in stead of "The British", Spain is practically notorious for that, not sending enough men to deal with the Mexican revolution, even though they had thousands of troops in Cuba and Venezuela.

1812 was more of a draw as the british had no need to fight it after napoleon fucked off with his tail took between his legs

We didn't underestimate America it's just at places like bunker hill we brought the wrong cannon balls letting the Americans win and boosting MORALE if we brought the right cannon balls those bloody Americans would have thought twice about messing with the great British empire remember at one point e ruled 1/4 of the world I don't see AMERICA saying that and also they underestimate North Korea I mean look what happend to you last time do you really think you will win when underestimating them

Ah nice ok. I presume they were muzzle loading? Also Isn't Snook the guy who blames the loss at Isandlwana almost entirely on Col. Dunford? Haven't read that one yet.

Ah interesting. Thanks for the comprehensive response. I think I'll have to read that one now. It'll be good to read a proper military analysis from a soldier's perspective and not continued emphasis on speculative myths about nailing ammunition boxes closed as so many other books do. Thank you :)

So all in all, not really the routing that it's so often displayed as. They should remake Zulu Dawn and make it as glorious as the film Zulu.
