Thank you very much for making this video. I'm an 80-year-old woman who's decided that life is too short to depend on others to take fix things, and this was my very first foray into the world of plumbing. Your calm voice and careful photography saved the day. Thank you SO MUCH!

Patricia, I'm 75 and I've removed the retaining pin. Attached a vice grip and pulled as hard as I can. It comes out a little bit and stops. Me being 225 lb's and a dumb Marine, I'm afraid I'm going to pull the whole faucet off the porcelain sink. I take medicine to help me be calm. It's not working tonight. I'm about ready to throw my tools out the 2nd floor window. I have the kitchen sink I can use to brush my teeth and make another try at it tomorrow.

I received some very useful advice when changing the cartridge: First, before inserting the new cartridge, rub silicone grease along the cartridge and inside where it fits. Also, before putting new cartridge in, turn water back on very briefly to flush the faucet. Thanks for the video.

I just replaced the cartridge (1225b) in my bathroom Moen sink faucet. This video made the effort quick and easy! I too encountered the same problem with the hot and cold water after the initial installation. But, thanks to the video, I was able to resolve this issue in no time at all. I doubt this effort would have gone as smooth if I had to rely on the paper instructions that came with the cartridge - which I found lacking specificity. In summary, a great, informative video that saved me $$$ by not having to request assistance from a plumber!

Thanks for your video. It' was clear, close-up and actually shows what to do! I was able to change the 1225 cartridge successfully. I had some difficulty removing 16 year old cartridge, but sprayed 100% vinegar on it and in 5 minutes it slid out!

You can align the cartridge so that the hot/cold is in the correct position. There's a hole in the metal shaft of the cartridge. Just place the hole facing you, in the 12 o'clock position. I also recommend that you turn the water off to the entire house. When you turn the water off from under the sink that can cause a leak there if it hasn't been turned for several years. Excellent video. Thanks.

Great video. I changed my cartridge. Used a cartridge puller as it was a bit hard to get out. Part of the rubber sleeve broke off and jammed it so the puller helped. Then I had to get the rubber unstuck from the cold water hole. After about ten minutes of trying to tweezer it out just ended up turning on the cold water in short bursts to flush it out. Of course then after putting cartridge back in it was backwards (hot water was on right) so I had to switch it 180. Put a touch of silicone grease on it and now runs perfect. Your video helped me through it all. Thanks!!!

I just watched a video on how to change a single handle Moen cartridge. Please note you don't spin the complete cartridge to change the hot water to the left side, you only spin the center that the handle screws to 180 degrees, thus you can do this without taking the copper U clip back out. Put the screw in it so you can pull center stem to on grab with fingers and spin 180 degrees which amounts to half a turn. Done!

Thanks for posting this video. I almost gave up trying to replace the part months ago. I gave up and was just going to replace the faucet but after months of looking at the faucet, I tried one more time because I had bought 2 replacement parts. The rubber gasket at the bottom is very fragile and if it goes in too fast or the wrong way it will tear and you have to buy another one. Needless to say, I fixed it and my wife is happy. 😊

This is one of the best You Tube videos on this subject I have seen. Thanks iScaper. As others have said, if you have hard water guaranteed pieces of the rubber on the cartridge will break off and you'll need to spend a LOT of time getting them out. I fashioned a tool out of a coat hanger (small hook at one end and a short 45 degree bend at the other) to help me pry the pieces out of the left and right side holes and drag them up the walls and out. Sort of like one of those arcade games! Also, be sure to get the cartridge puller tool because if you do have hard water, getting an old cartridges out will be impossible without it.

Yes! There are dozens of vids on the single handle pivot but few on this push/pull type. Very useful. It's these older types that are more likely to leak. Thanks. Well done vid. Now, if I could just get those valves under the cabinet to even budge.

Great video! Concise, complete and to the point. So many of the plumbing videos are so talky, that I practically fall asleep halfway through. A lot of gab about nothing. Plus, you obviously had your camera on a tripod. I was watching one the other day where the presenter used a GoPro mounted to his hat. I got motion sickness watching it and had to turn it off. Yours is very, very nicely done. Thanks for the excellent tutorial!

FYI you don't need to rotate the cartridge 180; just the center piece where the screw is. Meaning you don't have to take the pin and cover off again. Just make sure your hole is up and you are all good to go.

buy the Moen cartridge extractor/ stem cartridge wrench FIRST! Do not try to extract the old cartridge with pliers. If it's very old and/or your water is hard, it will break. Then it'll really take a lot of time. I have replaced 2 that were installed in 1986. First one without the extractor, the second one with the cartridge wrench. The best $12 you will ever spend. Without stem wrench the job takes 7 hours due to disassembly and removal of broken cartridge. With the tool it takes about 45 minutes. Good video, BTW.

@@Iscaper You're Welcome. But Inside the core where the cartridge fits was in was pretty rough, as the old cartridge had been in there a long time. So I used a wire brush with handle like they use on copper fittings, that was a bit smaller than the core, and gently scrubbed the interior of the core before I put the new Cartridge in. Seemed to work just fine. I was afraid if I didn't it would mess up the rubber seals on the cartridge. Thanks again.

Here's a quick tip for determining if the cartridge is 180 deg off. Just turn one side on. Hot or cold then check for orientation. One way will have water, one wont. If it corresponds to the side you turned on, you're good, otherwise rotate the cartridge. That way you don't have to wait for the hot water to get to the faucet.

Hi, iScaper1, thanks so much for this nice clear how-to tutorial! If you're still monitoring this video, I have a question for you. My Moen single handle bathroom sink faucet suddenly stopped shutting off all the way - when the handle was in the down (shut off) position, the water would not shut down completely, some continued to flow through the faucet. It's not just a drip, it's a stream of less water than when the handle is in the on position, but still a noticeable stream. So I turned both hot and cold water off at the cut off valves and went looking for answers. When I asked a plumber working in a neighboring condo, he said it sounded like I needed to replace the cartridge, so off I went to you tube and found a number of videos, yours included, on how to do that. Seemed like something I could manage, so I went to the neighborhood hardware store, asked one of the old-timers there, and turned out he agreed with switching out the cartridge, so I got a Moen replacement cartridge for the type of faucet it was, switched out the old for the new...and it did not solve the problem. But what I did find out was that when the change-out was done and the water switched back on, it WOULD shut down completely if I was running the cold water, but if I was running the hot water, it would not. So...any suggestions on why that might be? I'm pretty much resigned to replacing the whole faucet, but I'm still curious as to what mechanism on the hot-water side of the assemblage would cause a problem like this! Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!

The only thing I can think of is that there may be some debris or a piece of o-ring stuck in the valve body causing the leak.

So I found out you do not have to turn the whole unit to get the hot cold aligned, only turning the interior valve is required. Good tip that could save you time especially if your undersink valves are leaky and you had to turn off the whole house water to do this like me.

be careful! my old faucet had a tiny leak from the hot water side, but the shutoff valve for cold water would NOT shut off. I had to shut off all water to the house and a plumber put in a new 'ball valve' for hot and cold shutoff. and now I can replace the Moen cartridge. Turning off all water in the house is easy.... but if you try to replace valves and anything goes wrong.... good luck getting a plumber! So I hired one just to install 2 new shutoff valves in about 10 minutes and I have 2 more in the adjacent 1/2 bath faucet I can do at my leisure. ... Replacing the Moen faucet cartridge using the small plastic too supplied made replacement a breeze in a couple of minutes ... Rotate the cartridge left and right 5-7 times and then gently pull it all out...

Excellent instructions. How do you know if it is a Moen and how do you know what cartridge number to order?

I took a picture of the faucet and took it to a plumbing supply and showed it to the counter people. They told me it was a Moen Chateau model and took the 1225 cartridge.

You could have a damaged o-ring or debris in the valve body.

Sorry, the rubber debris would be coming from where? The old cartridge, or from the faucet body itself?

I have a Moen faucet in my bathroom just like that. It's constantly dripping. Which cartridge should I get? My husband and I are on a fixed income and don't want to have to pay a plumber to fix it. Thanks for your help.

It's a Moen 1225 or 1225B cartridge.
