Jehu...hi I am glad to see you introducing this pcb specially this one, because someone has designed in internet and it was free to print as a board throug JLCPCB then i got it 5 pcs. Just to try...they are very BAD. I had BAD experience with them, 1st the distance of each battery is very near so that there is the posiblity of contact and short-out. 2nd 2of the 4 corner screw are very near to the battery, here also there will be battery-short. 3rd the balance pin indicators wrote incorrect sequence which means when you follow GND...first pin ....B1...2nd pin the writing sequence are not direct to the pin. In general i dont suggest that the person like you have to use this. , unless you correct those faults.

@@mikegleasonjr I'm not really using it for cell balancing, more for cell status. I recommend the ISDT T8 BattGo because it will dissipate the uneven load variations much more effectively. Once balanced, I would not want to allow any kind of active balancing device to mess with the cells. The Calb cells inside my 1 foot cube power unit seem to remain within 10 or 20 mv's even after weeks go by without charging or loads connected and the BG-8s just goes quiescent with only a dim pulsating led to let me know its alive.

Did you get a chance to explore this or other balancers that behave the way this one did in the video when you removed the 1st cell? I bought your 7s starter kit and I'm repurposing the BG-8S for a smaller 24V system, much like your stackable modules, just with the LiPos from Ring doorbells, from Battery Hookup. I have most 7s packs working with balance leads connected to a little PCB breadboard with an 8pin IDC male on the end, emulating your design with 8pin ribbon cable v. 16pin. My question is regarding my struggle with my wiring/soldering/? causing strange behavior. When I plug a good pack up to the BG-8S, it show 1 through 7 all good around 3.9v and I can balance them, etc. However, a certain pack will show values 1 through 8 with values > 4.2v and 8 shows 1... v in RED??? I've checked all my leads over and over again. I test all the cells individually with a voltmeter and they all read around 3.9v, I then test all the pins of the IDC connection and they all read properly Neg to 1: 3.9v; Neg to 2: 7.8v; etc. up to 27.3v for the full pack. I don't believe there is any shorting going on, otherwise the output at the pins wouldn't increment properly...right? Just tired of scouring the interwebs for troubleshooting when every review is less useful than yours, for the most part, starting with how to remove the shrink wrap on the box...sigh... If you have any video I haven't come across in your arsenal, or any other community members that understand what my issue is please share a link to help. Thanks...you transformed my life into exploring off-grid living so much so that I bought 40 acres of raw land and feel completely empowered by just your powerwall builds to know I can succeed. After getting this 1Kw ammo can "Sunny" working, I'll be building a 5Kw unit with some 200Ah LiFePO4s, currently on a slow boat from China. But, I need to get an understanding of this issue first.

I keep watching videos about these things and nobody knows or is willing to say exactly how they work because the instructions are rubbish and everyone does a quick review before they know how to use it. I charged my 4s LiFePo4 battery, got the meter into LiFePo4 mode and applied load. I'm measuring load over time to determine the batteries capacity. Soon this thing is sounding an alarm. But why? What does the tweedle sound alarm mean? All cell voltages are highlighted in red, but are within nominal cell voltage limits. (3.298, 3.305, 3.302, 3.308) 13.2V for the 4s pack. Why is it sounding an alarm, and what is it trying to say is wrong? Why is there no useful instructions and why are ALL the reviews superficial and devoid of any useful information a person would need to know when actually operating a battery using this monitor? How about working with it for a while until you know how it works, or even just how the monitoring function works and doing an instructional video about how to use it and what the alarms and display red highlights mean? Do I need to hear it sound the alarm every few minutes even if I just want to use it to monitor the house batteries?

A thing to note: The device is powered by the batteries it's testing. Not good. It does not know when to stop drawing power and will drain the cells to dangerous levels. A beeping alarm is not adequate. Batteries don't care if the alarm went off. The chances of you being there to take care of the situation are slim. NEVER leave it unattended. If you leave unplug it and resume when you return.

Bit of a rushed video there. I have one of these and it is great when used for its purpose, checking RC batteries in the field and dealing with any slight misbalances, or acting as a quick USB power supply. When balancing, the cell in that was black is the target voltage for the operation, eventually, all turn black when finished, it is a passive balancer after all, and I would look for an active balancer with that size imbalance. It also has the function to check RC recievers and the protocols used for fault finding. Not a fair review at all.
@jehugarcia
@jehugarcia 5 жыл бұрын
Great for small batteries not great for big powerwalls, did you watch the video?
@stealthbanana
@stealthbanana 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I did, and I stand by what I say, it is a cell checker, for use in the field, with a balance function, for aimed at the Radio Control user, hence all the options to check the functionality of RC protocols which you did not mention at all, that is what it is sold for. In the manual, the cell balancing function that you spent most time covering is the last function mentioned. I use it for checking if a battery is healthy when changing over when flying, and if I need to balance them on my charger when I get home, I also have something that can check the RC system in case of problems. Your test was a bit extreme, as you said, and in correct use, the battery checker would have shown you the problem with such a huch disparity in the cells, so you could take action on more capable equipment. At least you could have read the manual, and explained what BattGo is properly. Shame, as your videos are usually excellent, but everyone has to have an off day.

I don’t care what it is good for, I only care that it’s not good for what I need it for and for what I see a lot of viewers think they want to use it for. I didn’t say it doesn’t work on small packs. I you shura you watched the video?
@stealthbanana
@stealthbanana 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did watch, The closest analogy I can think of is if you used a Swiss Army knife to butcher a cow, yes it will do it, not very well, will take a long time, will make a mess. There are much better tools for the job, but these tools would be useless for doing other jobs you can use a penknife for, such at that tool for getting Boy Scouts of horse's hooves or using the Corkscrew to open wine; therefore saying you cannot recommend it because of this one test is not honest and not very good. You neglected to mention anywhere in the video that this is not what the item is designed for, or marketed at. It is a diagnostic tool for a niche market. This is meant as honest criticism, no need for accusing people of not watching the video, or working for ISDT as you have done elsewhere.

@@jehugarcia This device is not designed to balance quickly, you're dismissing it on the wrong application. This is the person who disagreed with me a couple of years ago when I said you need BMS control of packs. Then you didn't know that batteries have a maximum charge current per manufacturer's specs. Then you reviewed Tenergy LiFePo4 batteries and said they were poor performers because they didn't have high peak current capabilities completely missing their application. The best batteries for power walls are LIFePo4. They are safe, don't explode and have high cycle rates. You don't need super high peak current capability in power walls. But actually I bought 640 of those Tenergy LiFePo4 batteries a year and a half ago. I got them for a steal on eBay probably because a lot of people were listening to you and buying Li-Ions for their power walls back then which I would never use. Please educate yourself, you don't know electronics and it's a complex field, you can't keep oversimplifying it and making statements that are wrong, dangerous or can cause harm. Batteries need very careful handling and use. People be careful, if you want to learn electronics do it from a good source, someone like Dave Jones on YT who knows the field.
