I've seen non-technical KZbinr sponsor these devices without even trying to figure out how good they really are. Didn't even mention the app not being updated in four years. Thanks for the service, as interesting as always. Can't wait to see the Nitecore review since I was one viewer that suggested you to check them out. Get ready to see how toasty the Nitecore 10K gets. Mine can't really get a full charge to my 17.4Wh phone's battery without a break from 15% to around 85% and the inductors scream a tad. But I also think it's due to my phone's charging curve being wonky and not negotiating correctly the 12V mode it's capable of. Though the efficiency is pretty great, around 78% from my rough math.
@AllThingsOnePlace

I took one apart. There are some interesting technical failures inside. Like a plastic sheet between the primary power supply and a metal plate, that has no blades, so the fan is ineffective at getting the heat out... The plastic getting melty was the smell probably. The power supply is completely independent though so, it's a 200W 24V power supply with PFC, actually looks okay if you can get decent forced air over it, it's made like a slim power supply for some reason, I'm going to test it independently and see how it is as a power supply. Looks like it even has provisions for earthing. Then just chuck the USB part in the parts bin. Maybe can salvage one of those protocol chips? Thanks for the starter on the Nitecore, starting to work on that now. I need to get a better habit of getting these videos started.. a lot of hours of testing to do this week.
@TommyThousandFaces
@TommyThousandFaces 10 ай бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace Well that was A LOT to take in and would've probably made the video 30 minutes long. Geez that's a long list of small "misses" that add up. The plastic between the primary and the heat spreader really sounds like poor QC or no QC at all. Like they get the sheets from another factory with plastic to protect them and don't care to remove it. Considering how nice the PFC is in that 24V PSU is truly worth testing it out indipendently. Also this hodgepodge way of making a charging station might explain how they tried to achieve the non renegotiation on plug and unplug. Your reviews are very details so I get why it's hard to get started on the video. You're welcome about the Nitecore starter! I have the Gen. 1 10K so if you need me to get some rough numbers I'll be glad to help.

Was looking into these as I'm really content with their sony camera battery charger, but whoa these are underwhelming. BUT I want to note, that the app's function is beyond turning the beeping on and off, because the chargers get Firmware updates through it. My battery charger got at least 2 since may, so these maybe get as well. Of course fw cant mitigate all these issues, but some might. Also dont know which app have you seen in app store, but both ios and android versions of ISD Link are updated around monthly.

Yikes. Sounds like some kind of janky cooling solution to compensate for those poor efficiency numbers. It's easy to forget that 85% efficiency means it has to dissipate 50% more heat than a 90% efficient design, so even a few percent is a big difference. I wouldn't trust that thing to last, and without a safety listing, who knows if it wouldn't go up in smoke when it does fail.

The fake power limits shed a light on a weird issue I have been having with my 200x. When my iPad is charging at ~40w and I plug in an empty 737 the 737 will charge at 140, and ipad will drop to 20. When I unplug the 737 or it finishes charging the ipad never goes back up beyond 20 unless I plug/replug it. Firmware update did not affect this. (Wattage figures are as reported by the 200x). This is feeling a bit like ProjectFarm now, where I watch to see how bad the stuff I alreday bought is 😂
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 ай бұрын
ProjectFarm is amazing. I'm not at that level. This is a part time hobby. Yes, I would expect a firmware update to not change the charging characteristics of the device. I tore it down and the microcontroller adjusts the screen and fan speed but the USB protocol chips are hard baked in so you can't really do much with them besides flip a few switches that decide how to limit power, and that's only if those are wired. I can see the sections having issues with overheating.

So, if you dig deeper into products, you tend to find something off in each. So, my current daily driver is a 165W Satechi 4 port charger. It's not bad, if you are on 120V AC or lower. It is more efficient at 230, and still safe but it leaks so you will get the tingling feeling from items while using them. It has high idle power consumption but it makes up for that with it's very high efficiency. It also does do the renegotiation dance. I'd expect the money (owners) to step in and say no at some point to power stations, no idea how much they spent on that development process and how much it actually makes versus the core business though. It would be interesting to do some more digging on this. I'd rather see a push for sustainable, replaceable disposable batteries. Actual recycling programs... or good/safe 18650's in stores. We don't need another power station or another power bank but a good battery manufacturer is certainly welcome.
