I think it had to do with the fact that part of the demon cure had to do with putting the cleansed blood into the mouth of the demon at the end (which Sam didn't do to Crowley, so he wasn't cured), and we didn't see Sam do it to Dean, though we may just be expected to think that he did (something I've wondered too).

Mandy Cummins you It was not his blood he was using it was someone else and if he did use his the last thing that happen in season 8 would happen closing the gates of hell and Sam would have Die curing Dean I think so they had too work around that.

KHWendy28 NO,that would have had to happen at the end of the trials. Sam was no longer undergoing the trials. He wasn't carrying that around any more, he was cured of his injures from that by Gadreel. The blood cure did exist separate to Closing the gates of Hell, in wasn't soething that was only for that purpose. There is still the need at the end of the cure to have the demon ingest the cleansed blood whether or not it's coming from the person doing the cure. Again it's just left up to the viewer as to whether or not Dean did get blood in the mouth after the last injection. According to the way the blood cure was laid out by the Men of Letters he would have had to, even if it wasn't shown.
